If this is not stretched to you, I fear your definition of "stretched".

Also, the purpose of the newmenu is not for your to navigate. That is what the search function is for.
It is for exploring. If you're using the newmenu to get directly to your page destination, you're using the wiki incorrectly.

Personally, I never use that page to begin with.

But it couldn't hurt to make the lists expandable.

I agree that it stretches it, but the left and right columns are the same height if you include the subcategories, so it's not really stretching it unless we reduce the other column's size. So why not keep the categories there?
