Display pings on Auto Server Statuses
Where exactly would it be pinging from east coast? Because it might help me at least since i'm on the east coast...
Probably would also want to say a note about what it is and location under the box like with edit this section and etc.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. And I will, just even seeing if it's something people want.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping
It's a measurement of time between you and a server basically. Ms = milliseconds.
Oh, that's rather interesting, thanks. I find it pretty neat that Xcelled is in Pennsylvania as well. o 3o Will it matter if it's set in a different time zone? o.o
Well yes, if you live near pennsylvania then the numbers will be kinda accurate for you, but if you live farther away the numbers will most likely be lower than what you'd get from where you live. And obviously if you live in california where the nexon servers are you'd be getting the lowest numbers (and most likely the least lag).
Timezone won't matter either, except for 1:01 AM when the clocks switch to EDT or EST. But that is only 2 minutes out of the whole year.
I don't see how time zones matter at all, even for those two minutes. But this is only useful for those living in the east coast. There are dramatic ping differences from the east and west. Plus, it also depends on your ISP and internet speed. Basically, only useful if you live near Pennsylvania and have the same ISP with the same internet plan. Those with minute differences will receive a ping similar to this.
It matters because if the server sends a ping and the time flips over to DST, you'll get a -1hour ping. Highly unlikely, but still.......
And the pings can help. I mean if it's showing a ping of 500ms, it's pretty likely that the server is lagging, no matter where you are.
Timezones should never matter if you use the system clock to measure, which is UTC unless you're on Windows.
>On windows
>Just remembered server is on linux
Awesome, thanks. That'd be a rad idea to add this, as long as people know how to use it. And don't most people use Windows operating systems anyway? I know very few people who use Linux. xD
Nah, Linux is better for those imo.
Games is where Windows has Linux beat. Which is why I run Windows. Dual booting and/or a VM just aren't practical atm.
But this is getting off track... any other thoughts on adding pings?
Everyday task: Stay virus free. Linux is inherently more secure, unless you go around as root. In which case, can't help you.
Install software. Easy on all flavors. Ubuntu: $ sudo apt-get install skype.
Price: Free VS $200.
Compiling software. You wouldn't believe the time it took to get an Apache module set up on my windows dev server. Linux took literally 3 commands: configure, make, install.
NO GLOBAL HOOKING API. Kicks keyloggers in the nuts. Hard.
Reliability. I have a 14 year old HP pavilion that came with Windows ME. XP won't run. Vista/7 barf. Red Hat Linux, though, runs faster AND it has encountered a complete hardware swap at once. Didn't even twitch.
The following are more CS specific:
Wide variety of diagnostic tools
Coding. Hands down less of a hassle.
Open sorce means you can fix your own problems if you're so inclined, or others can fix them for you.
Beyond that, everything is pretty much the same for your average Joe. http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000575.htm
PLUS you can run most Windows programs under Linux. Including Office.
@Anemki, it doesn't matter what you're using, only what the server is running.
Yes it is. But Kevin, you have yet to tell me your computing habits...
Now that we're totally off topic.
GAMES. ALL DAY, EVERYDAY!
Naaah. not really.
Games, of course. Surfin' the internet. Instant Messaging. Music. Programming (when I get bored enough/have the time/have a purpose). Yeeep.
If a number is high enough that it's definitely lagging, shouldn't it already be tripping that channel's notice from "Online" to "Latency"?
