I'm 99% sure that Song receives the buff bonus from Playing instrument and vice versa. I have rank 1 Song, Playing Instrument, and Battlefield Overture. Without an instrument equipped, I get a 26% base increase to damage. According to the formula, this means I have 30 buff: 15 from Song and 15 from Playing Instrument.

Make that 100%; I can vouch for this.

If playing instrument receives a buff bonus from song, then that is what should be changed. As for when I use an instrument or sing, there is no buff difference. (I have both at rank 1)

However, that contradicts your original statement of "however this does not include playing instrument." Either way, your edit was wrong. Playing instrument doesn't receive any bonuses; it's the music buff skills that receive the bonus from playing instrument and song.

I'm not sure what you're trying say. However, hopefully this will clarify things for you. This is how buff calculations work, and it doesn't matter if you're using Song or Playing Instrument:

base_skill_value * (1 + music_buff_bonus/100) * quality_multiplier

• base_skill_value would be what the buff skill's base value would be. For example, rank 1 Battlefield Overture's base max damage buff would be 20%.
• music_buff_bonus would be your total music buff stat, which is added from your rank of Playing Instrument and Song, Grandmaster Bard talent, titles, and enchants.
• quality_multiplier is whether you get a normal (1.0), excellent (1.1), or inspiring (1.3) performance.

Here's another thing that might help you understand. If you rank down your Playing Instrument skill from rank 1 to rank 2, you will get slightly worse buffs whether you use Song or Playing Instrument. If you rank down Song, you'll see the same thing happen.
