Newmenu changes

I'll concede that yes, changes to that template should be discussed by the community before being made, but...where's a good place to actually do that? The wiki itself obviously isn't really a discussion forum, and...unfortunately I don't really use the M-World forums myself, so I don't know if they're active enough to even have the discussion there either.

I personally still think it's pointless to make the sections open by default if you want them to be collapsible...who's really going to click to hide a section? Perhaps, to address the issue with having empty space, the other sections on the front page could be rearranged? Something like...have the general news and server updates side-by-side, I dunno. But even with collapsed sections, that "giant space" would quickly go away when a user expands one of the sections to get to the page they need. I mean, that menu is pretty much the entire function of the main page, other than the at-a-glance server status/news updates. But then as the face of the wiki, I guess there should be a balance between presentation and function...what do you think?

Well, I did use to have a page that I had suggested as a new front page, but not many people payed attention to the Q&A that linked to it. Here's what it looked like, User:Ikkisuki/Wiki Home.

Also, you could have created a discussion on the Talk:Wiki Home page.

Mm...yeah, I could've done that but I didn't really know if anywhere I put it was gonna get a lot of views. I did have something up on the talk page for the template itself, but...I guess that takes a bit more work to get to as well.

In any case, that example of yours is pretty much exactly like what I was thinking of to address the "empty space" issue. Maybe switch the positions for the "server status" and the "wiki intro" but that's not really important. It still looks a lot less cluttered with all the sections stored away!

Change the frontpage to your's then, Kevin! I don't think many people objected to it ~小太郎 TALKCONTRIBS 2011:03:15:05:00 (Tuesday)

the page doesn't look good with the server status as the first module; it should be on the right side of Mabinogi World Wiki. Please change it.

While we're on the topic of aesthetics, the categories section on the sidebar and the collaps(ed/ible) sections on the main page seem somewhat redundant and a little lacking.

Since the sidebar is present everywhere on the wiki, and the main page kinda.. isn't, what if the categories bit of the sidebar was fleshed out to cover all the top-level game elements and the main page was focused a little more on users new to Mabinogi or the wiki itself?

Perhaps it could even include a community-suggested, wiki-admin-approved tips n' advice handbook for new players? (and before Tellos runs in here freaking out, a little bit of widely agreed-upon subjectivity is not necessarily a bad thing, especially where improving peoples' experience is concerned.)

Sounds like a good idea to me.

And this is what happens when no one pays attention to the suggestion in the first place.

Actually, I have to object to the changes made to the main page layout. It seemed far more intuitive to have it the way it was before with news and updates on the left and everything else uncollapsed on the right. Considering that the server updates section only indicates the client version and current generation, it does not need to be at the top of the page because it's unlikely that most players really come to the wiki to see that. And while having everything collapsed at the bottom may reduce clutter, it does make it a little harder to get to certain pages easily because now the simple one-click navigation is lost. Furthermore, the information contained in those sections has equal, if not more, importance compared to the news, which is why I always felt it was better when they were side-by-side. As the layout is now, it seems too difficult to navigate by comparison and not all that aesthetically pleasing.
