Trivia

  • The story told in this book is a rough approximation of the ancient Mesopotamian myth The Descent of Inanna.
    • In the story the goddess Inanna (later known as Ishtar) goes to meet her sister, the ruler of the underworld Ereshkigal. Inaana is humiliated, beaten, and hung up on a hook as a corpse. Expecting foul play, Inaana had already instructed her advisor and servant Ninshubur to come to her rescue if she does not return.
    • After three days and three nights, Ninshubur does as Inaana asked and goes to various temples to seek help. The god Enki sends two genderless beings (later versions reduce this to one) with the magical food and water of life with which they can revive Inanna.
    • Inaana is told by the judges and demons of the underworld that she must send someone to take her place. The story then explains the demons that follow Inaana out, the galla, as demons small and large like short and tall reed fences. The ones that carry scepters are not ministers and the ones that carry maces are not warriors, and the demons are those who do not know food, water, offerings, gifts, lovemaking, or sweet children.
