By Mian PrefaceWe humans have long dwelled in the blessed land of Erinn, privileged to build our legacy upon its fertile hills and plains. Still, our history has not been without its trials: our resolve has been tested time and again by natural disasters, and by the brutality of the Fomors. Having at last sufficient force of arms to safeguard our people, and with Fomor attacks far less common now than in times past, some have come to regard the threat posed by the Fomors as ancient history. However, we must never forget the innumerable lives lost battling the Fomors--sacrifices that have afforded us the freedom we enjoy today. This volume, written so that our history might always be remembered, tells of the great leader who secured victory for mankind in the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh. Herein shall his virtues be extolled, and the richness of life his triumph won for us be made plain. I pray that the protection of Lugh, the great Knight of Light, will shine upon all who read these words and show due reverence for this great leader of men. Lugh LamhfadaLugh, the Knight of Light, fought against the Fomors in the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh. While all know that his triumph in that conflict brought victory to mankind, it may come as a surprise that there are no written records of his birth or upbringing. Some claim that this is because he had accomplished no deeds worthy of renown before his heroic feats as a warrior of the kingdom, but others believe that any documents referencing his youth or prior accomplishments were lost along with the multitude of records burned or otherwise destroyed at the time of the First Battle of Mag Tuireadh. The earliest extant records we still possess date to after the First Battle of Mag Tuireadh. These documents make mention of him appearing in Erinn during the reign of King Bres. Even from the outset, it is clear he was greatly admired for his valor and for his exceptional skill in combat. These records are also notable for being the first to document Lugh's full name, "Lugh Lamhfada". Given that his life before this point belongs to the realm of folktales and hearsay, it is not surprising that some believe Lugh was sent at the behest of the goddess of war to deliver mankind. Lugh, who served as a military officer during the tyrannical rule of King Bres, eventually caught the eye of the wise King Nuadha Airgetlam, he of the Silver Arm. Fighting in many pitched battles against the Fomors, he was eventually raised up to the position of commander over all the Tuatha de Danann forces. In the climactic Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh, Lugh faced down and slew Balor, the Lord of the Fomors, bringing to an end the long war between mankind and the Fomors. We would be wise, then, to consider the factors that helped him to achieve total victory in this historic campaign. 1. He was ever vigilant and prepared 2. When war broke out, his conviction never wavered 3. He adapted his tactics to suit the needs of the moment 4. He united the races In the wake of mankind's victory over the Fomors, Lugh, hailed as the Knight of Light, went on to succeed the fallen Nuadha. Becoming the monarch of the Aliech Kingdom, he would rule over the Tuatha de Danann. Though his accomplishments as king in the years that followed were no less worthy of praise, his image would forever linger in the minds of his subjects as a courageous leader in a time of great strife. They would always remember him as the Knight of Light, his countenance fierce and determined as he took the field in his gleaming armor. His LegacyHistory records Lugh's many accomplishments during his reign as monarch. However, one day, he simply abdicated the throne and disappeared. But even though he may have left the stage of history, he will forever remain a hero in the hearts of his people--the shining Knight of Light. Many believe with truest faith that when the shadows loom long over the Tuatha de Danann once more, Lugh will appear again to lead and rescue mankind. |
