Defense Stat

Does Defense have some sort of influence on Gold Strike, or will it be ignored?

I have noticed that I do 1s to golems at times when they're dead, presumably because they have more defense than the alchemists which take 30 when dead. (finishes) so I think defense still affects it, but I dont think it cares about protection.
