Hmm according to this elemental magic shields are more effective against int/adv magic, it's possible that could explain why player where only taking 1 damage against thunder/fireball
i.e 40% + 40% + 40% = 120% elemental protection effectively reducing even a r1 fireball critical to 1 damage…
