Forum - Commenting system??

Overview > Mabinogi World Wiki > Wiki Projects > Commenting system??
[#7]

Continuing off of Thread:Talk:Wiki_Home/forumz_r_ded_lol.

Should we have comments on articles? What do you want to use them for? Which pages should they go on?

Additionally:
Do you prefer a commenting system for the Discussion page as opposed to the threaded system? Replies work about the same. The difference is the lack of titles and perceived formality but also the way it's sorted: Liquid Threads sorts by date (most recent first) Comments sorts by rating.

I'd say it's fine, it sounds like it would be a more user-friendly way of providing input for a topic.

»Comments sorts by rating.«

I'm not too sure about the ratings though, if someone gets de-rated for asking a dumb question they might not even get an answer to that question! =c

Obviously testing forum replies as well. [Inserting Test Edit]

Yeah that's my main concern with replacing LQT on discussion pages. :(

Yeah, I don't like the sound of a rating system effecting visibility of posts, though I do think not having to have a topic name is a big plus.

I mean, you could put comments on the main page, but I think that should be its own subpage, or maybe somethings that can be toggled if possible. Would these comments show up in recently changes or something? How are the moderators going to keep track of them?

I've been looking through these forums. Everything looks promising so far and sounds like a big step up. But I have two concerns. There doesn't seem to be a preview button when writing this post, and the names of the posters don't seem obvious enough. I'm not sure if these are things you can control, or if they're just not important enough right now and would be left for later.

How would comments look? Would they be similar to liquid threads or the forums or completely different?

There's an example here. They can be placed on any page so it could be mainpage or discussion (or both) but I can't make a new tab for them. We could do subpages but I think the point of them is better visibility of opinion as opposed to User pages, which has been a major complaint in the past. When it's only opinions and not asking for help, I think a rating system makes more sense, since people can rate by usefulness.

Also yes they'll show up in recent changes.

Preview button I can't really do anything about. I could move the names but I think they have about the same visibility as LQT, do you disagree? It's quick enough to get used to anyway.

I wish the break between posts was a little more visible. It would be nice if the person's name showed up under or above their avatar, since that's kinda how it is in many forums. It also bothers me that the avatars are all the way on the right as opposed to the left, but that's not a big deal or anything, just my own preference.

You must not like Reddit. Or Imgur. Or many other sites.

I don't. I consider it a design flaw when what you see online is being controlled by an algorithm instead of a moderator or you're account preferences. Particularly in sites like Youtube where content can be unlisted completely because they claim the algorithm knows better what you want. It should be in the power of the user or moderators how visibility is sorted, not by a program or other users

And I agree with Angevon. If possible it'd be nice if names can be near the avatar, since they're both a means of identifying the author. I have no opinion on what side what should be on.

This explains a lot. Thank you for clarifying.

I definitely agree with this. Not sure what I wanna do tho. Bigger margin? This thread isn't really about the forums tho.

Kapra; This isn't really an algorithm, I mean maybe it has some fancy decay for old but popular things like Reddit does but I highly doubt it. I'm pretty sure it's completely by user rating and only sorts by date in the case of ties. It's really not a design flaw it's just different.

As for a comment system in general, I don't have much of an opinion about it. I don't tend to pay attention to them. I guess it could be nice on item pages so someone could easily comment on where they found something, etc.
