Indispensable Handbook

Published by the Royal Territory Development Committee

Congratulations are in order, friend, for surely the ember of commerce burns within you, lighting the beacons of tomorrow's hottest bargains!

You hold in your hands the definitive guidebook prepared by the Royal Territory Development Committee for new merchants who have managed to secure for themselves a shop in the Marketplace district. If you master the tenets set down here, you'll no doubt find yourself running a ship-shape shop in no time.

Lease Licenses

From the moment you win the auction on a shop, you become the holder of a lease license valid for 4 years (Erinn time), which equates 4 weeks of real-world time. This license is non-transferable, and will remain valid for as long as you pay your taxes to the castle maintaining the Marketplace.

If you fail to pay your taxes, the license will automatically be revoked if you fail to pay the overdue amount by the time the next payment is due. The license will also end naturally once the lease's preset duration has ended. When your lease license disappears, items or money still remaining in the shop will be placed into temporary storage by the Marketplace's bank.

When your license is about to expire, a notification will appear advising you to clear the shop. It's easier for everyone involved if you take care of your items or money in advance of the lease's expiration. so it's best that you take care of the items or money inside the shop in advance. After a license has expired, the shop has no owner for a period of time, and cannot be entered until the shop is put up for auction again.

Taxes

Taxes are a fact of life, and you must pay them, or you'll soon find yourself without a shop. These taxes are calculated according to a set tariff rate. The taxes shop owners must pay are as follows:

Tax Breakdown = Total Construction Cost x Tariff

You can check the tariff and the tax your shop must pay through your Brownie, or on the sign located in front of the shop.

How to Pay Your Taxes

Shop owners can either pay their taxes in person, or delegate the responsibility to the shop Brownie. Keep in mind, though, that there must be sufficient Gold in the shop safe to cover the amount to be paid in tax. If you have delegated payment of taxes to the shop Brownie, the money will be automatically deducted from the shop safe when taxes are due. If you're set to make payments manually, you must press the 'Pay Taxes' button to make your payment.

If you are overdue in the payment of your taxes, you will receive a warning notification each time you enter the shop. If you haven't paid your back-taxes by the next payment deadline, you'll lose your shop license and be forced to vacate the shop.

Taxes are collected once per year in Erinn time (that's once per week in real-world time), starting from the moment you lease the shop.

The Shop Safe

A helpful Brownie is assigned to assist at every shop. By speaking with the Brownie, you can store and place items inside the shop. This space where items are stored is the safe.

You can store up to 50 million Gold in the shop safe. Keep in mind that if you put an item up for sale while the safe is full, there is a chance that the item will be prevented from selling, as you cannot receive the money gained from the sale (refer to section 4, 'Selling Items', for details).

The space inside the safe is identical to that of the display window inside the shop. If you try to place an item in your safe, it will show up the same in the shop display window.

Not satisfied with the way you set up your furniture the first time? Just use the Change Directions option after right clicking the item from the inventory and you'll be able to rotate the item 90 degrees at a time. Rotate the furniture as often as you like until you achieve maximum satisfaction.

Unlike with the basic inventory window, each item takes up only a single space in the shop safe. Because of this, savvy shop owners know that if an item is taking up too much space in their inventory, they can store it in their shop safe and reclaim those valuable inventory spaces.

Selling Items

What is a shop if not a place to sell one's wares? To list an item for sale, first place the item inside the safe and right-click it. After setting a price, as one would for a personal shop, the item will be available for others to purchase. If you want to change the item's position in your safe, you must disable its price settings first.

If you wish to purchase an item from another shop, you can view the list of items through the Brownie, or manually click the items placed on the ground. If an item has been listed for sale, you will see a message window asking you to confirm whether you'd like to purchase that item.

When selling items in your shop, you need to ensure there's enough room in the shop safe to take in the money you'll receive from the sale of your items. If receiving payment for an item would cause you to exceed the maximum money storage capacity, you will be unable to sell it until you are able to accommodate the money from its sale.

Vacating a Shop

A shop will be cleared if its owner loses the license, or once the lease expires. The shop itself doesn't disappear - just the items held within. Once a shop has been vacated, it cannot be entered until it goes up for auction again.

If you left items or money in a shop that has since been cleared, you can retrieve them from the bank in the Marketplace. Although there's no restriction on retrieving items, money from vacated shops is stored in the form of a check, a service which levies a 5% fee from the total amount left in the shop before the check is made.

When a shop is vacated, the security deposit paid in the auction to win the lease will be returned in the form of a registered bond. If the shop was vacated because you were overdue on paying your taxes, however, an amount equal to your unpaid taxes will be automatically deducted from the security deposit.

Miscellany

Now that you're a certified shop owner, why not pay a visit to friends' shops and check out their wares? If you're not sure where your friend's shop is located, you can ask at an Owl Information Desk, conveniently located across the Marketplace. If you click on it, a help window will be displayed. Clicking on the shop in the window's mini-map will display its coordinates.

There are two main ways to find a shop: the address, and the shop's name. Type the name of the shop or its address in the text field and press the search button. The results will be displayed in red. When running a search by name, you can also search for a main character's name to find the shop associated with them.

Here, a main character is the character on a player's account that the shop is registered to. By default, the character who placed the winning bid for the shop at the auction is set as the main character, but players can choose another character to be the owner from the manage menu. And as a note for those of you who are surely wondering, it's not possible to set an animal character as the main character of a shop. How will they count out all that Gold without proper hands?

Check the board in front of the shop to view your shop's address, in case you need to give it to friends looking to pay you a visit. Alternatively, you can just ask the banker.

It's only natural to not know the location of someone else's shop, but it's another thing entirely to have trouble finding your own shop. Thankfully, your shop will always appear in red on the mini-map. If you click another shop's board, that shop will be highlighted in blue on the mini-map.

Do you wish to ONLY allow an exclusive list of visitors into your shop?

You can configure who is able to access your shop via the guest list management menu.

With 'Allow All' as the base setting, everyone will be able to enter except those you specifically restrict. Click the (+) in the menu to add the names of the guests that you wish to restrict access for. On the other hand, if you have 'Deny All' as the base setting, no one will be able to enter except those you specifically allow. You can choose to allow and disallow individuals, or entire guilds if you so choose.

This concludes the Novice Merchant's Indispensable Handbook, brought to you by the Royal Territory Development Committee.
