Weapon data templates?

Weapon data templates?

While replacing the deprecated DropList parameter with ObtainList as well as cleaning up the Staves List and Scythes List, I was wondering if it would be beneficial to split the weapons data into its own template, much like how the monsters have their own data template. Then Template:Weaponbox can be converted into a style template and a corresponding list template can be created as well.

This was suggested a very long time ago, but IIRC some people argued that templates made it harder for the average wiki user to edit to add information, so it didn't happen, but I feel that this is a null complaint now. I think the templates are a good idea to keep the information consistent across pages, because it's really a losing fight just keeping the item list pages up-to-date. Some weapons already have data templates from that era, so that's a start. It would be a lot of work, though, considering how many weapons there are. Also many of the parameters on the existing weapon data templates are unused & out of date (e.g. SellMin and SellMax & others), so they need to be cleaned up a bit.

I don't mind helping out with the data entry & cleanup as long as the templates are actually put to use. So, maybe make the style templates first.

If the templates are documented well and the parameter names are clear enough, then it shouldn't be a problem. As for "fixing" older templates, the easiest way to do that is to set up a temporary pass-through template and subset it in place of the original template. I did this very thing on Wikipedia several times without any problems.
