[Guide] A New Tale for Samhain Eve

(You receive a letter from an owl.)

Singer of Secrets (Side-Bubble)
Salutations, (Character Name). I believe this is the first time I've had the opportunity to greet you personally. It's rather refreshing!
If you can spare a bit of time, would you mind paying me a visit? You can head to the Library in Dunbarton, or simply use the Unsigned Invitation the owl delivered, which should ferry you here with a reasonably low likelihood of strange side-effects.
I have a proposal for you. ...The good sort, I assure you! I'll tell you more when you arrive and, if you're the curious sort I take you for, I think you'll be properly intrigued.

(You head over to the Dunbarton Library.)

His welcoming expression is a beacon, like the light of Ladeca through the deep, still Samhain night. With hair the color of a starless sky and clothes like shadows, he gives off an air of gloominess-- that is, until he smiles or talks, when his air of friendliness and cheer wins out.

Singer of Secrets
Ah, there you are, (Character Name). I'm glad you decided to come! When I sent that owl with the invitation, I wasn't sure whether or not you'd accept.
It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance! I'm...

(The man stops short, putting a finger to his lips. He, apparently, needs to consider his introduction carefully. It certainly doesn't make him seem less suspicious.)

Singer of Secrets
Well... the important thing to know is, I wander the world collecting stories and setting them to song.
I'm something of a musician, you could say.

(The self-titled musician remains silent a moment, perhaps waiting to see if you have any interjections to make, then continues.)

Singer of Secrets
Now, (Character Name), the reason I requested your presence wasn't to discuss music-- though that does sound enjoyable. No, I called you here because Samhain is drawing closer by the day.
You're familiar with the festival of Samhain, yes? It's the day when the line between the world of the living and the world of the dead is as its thinnest, and the spirits of the departed may cross over.
As I mentioned, I'm something of a connoisseur of tales, and I travel far and wide collecting stories from all over the world.
Of late, I've set my sights set on a unique drama I think is full to the brim with spellbinding potential: the story of what you'll experience this Samhain season.
I must confess a considerable curiosity regarding what will befall one of Erinn's most notable heroic personages.
But don't think that I intend to benefit from your intrepid exploits without compensating you. Perish the thought! I think you'll be most pleased with what I have to offer.
So, what say you, (Character Name)? Might I persuade you to play the part of the protagonist of Samhain?

> Prompt: Well... Okay (Select as Main Character) or Let me think about it...

> Prompt: Well... Okay (Select as Main Character)

Singer of Secrets
Wonderful! But... are you sure?

> Prompt: Not quite yet... or Yes. (Select as Main Character)

(Selecting Not Quite Yet gives the same dialogue than Let me think about it.)

> Yes. (Select as Main Character)

(The Singer of Secrets nods at you, smiling softly.)

Singer of Secrets
I'm so grateful you've agreed, (Character Name). Ahh... I wonder what secrets Samhain will hold this year...
Ehee... I can't wait to find out!

(The Singer of Secrets produces a pen and a sheet of paper, continuing to talk all the while.)

Singer of Secrets
Oh, by the by, might I ask you a question? ...If it's no trouble, of course.
It's a relatively innocuous query, but it'll give me a better sense of who you are! You may want to think it over before answering, but don't let worry furrow your brow TOO deeply; you'll be able to change your mind later if you so desire.
Think about your adventures, (Character Name). Are you the type who likes to figure everything out on your own? Or are you the sort who appreciates a bit of timely direction along the way?

> Prompt: I like to puzzle things out myself! or I prefer having a bit of guidance

Singer of Secrets
I'm glad to see you certainly don't shy away from a forthright answer. Now, if I could ask you to close your eyes-- just for a moment.

> On-screen text: You close your eyes, as the Singer of secrets asked.

(At the Singer of Secrets' request, you close your eyes, and you hear the rustle of his sleeves as he snaps his fingers.)

Singer of Secrets
I just sprinkled you with a dash of magical powder, made from the finely ground quills of white and brown owls. Just as those very birds ferry quests and missives across the realms, this powder's enchantment will make the twists and turns of your adventure known to me, even from afar.
...If I might give you some friendly advice, I bid you open your ears to any songs you might hear in the course of your adventure. Good music has a way of making precious memories all the more indelible. Trust me on this one.

(You nod to the Singer of Secrets, affirming the wisdom of his suggestion.)

Singer of Secrets
...That's all I can tell you, for now. Aaaanyway, may fortune favor you!

(The Singer of Secrets raises his hand to begin an ornate farewell.)

Singer of Secrets
Your openness to advice reflects well on you. I truly do appreciate it. Ahh... what curious circumstances will present themselves to you this Samhain season? None are more excited than I to discover the answer.

> On-screen Text: A few days before Samhain, somewhere in the underworld...

???
...Ack!

(The view opens on Binne and Bleiddian, standing in the middle of an empty, white space and facing each other.)

(Bleiddian shakes his head, seeming upset.)

Bleiddian
*sigh* ...This is so embarassing. How'd we lose another one?

(Binne crosses her arms.)

Binne
And a little kid, too? Really?

Bleiddian
Yeah, yeah, Binne, I know. *sigh* As if we didn't have enough on our plates.
I know it's our sacred duty as Midnight Agents to escort the dead from Erinn to the underworld, but... no one ever warned me it'd be this much trouble! I swear, it's like herding cats sometimes. How are they even getting out?

(Bleiddian grabs at his hair.)

Bleiddian
Argh! We really gotta go all the way up there again? Again? It's not fair! Do you see this, Binne? Look at my hair. I swear I'm going bald from the stress.

Binne
Let's just get this over with.

(A robed figure walks up to the two agents.)

???
...Bleiddian, Binne.

(The two turn to face at the newcomer.)

???
I will take care of this spirit.

Binne
Sian?

Bleiddian
Sian? I know that name. Oh, right! She's the investigation unit's new recruit, yeah? They're all aflutter about her potential.

Binne
Right.

Bleiddian
But Sian's in the investigation unit, Binne. Look, she's even got that weird getup so humans can't see her... Do you really think she can handle an escort job like this?
Although it's not like we couldn't use her help right now...

Binne
Hmm. Sian can handle it. Right, Sian?

Sian
Yes, I will have the spirit back before Samhain is over.

(Binne nods, smiling.)

Binne
...Heh. Good attitude.
This target shouldn't be too difficult. Well within your abilities.

Bleiddian
Huh. Well, okay. If Binne trusts you, then so do I. Just keep in mind the most important rule: the dead may not cause any change in the living world. You understand the consequences if it's broken, right?

Sian
...I do. The punishment is the destruction of the spirit.

Bleiddian
Yep. You're a sharp one, all right. Well, case is yours. Good luck, Sian.

Binne
Keep both eyes open. Can't trust everything you see up there. If you have a problem, call.

Sian
Do not concern yourself over me. I won't cause you any trouble.

(Sian gives a curt bow.)

Sian
Thank you for your confidence. I'll be off, then.

(The scene fades away. The crank of a music box being wound up is heard. Then, the view opens once more on a young boy on a hill near Dunbarton.)

Kid
*pant* *pant* Ugh... So... tired...
Is this... Dunbarton?
Wow, it really has changed!
That Milletian who everyone's always talking about hangs around here, right? I think that's what people said...
Okay. Gotta get going. There's probably already agents after me... and I really, really can't go back before I find Dad. If I can't tell him I'm doing okay... all of this will be for nothing.
I'm coming, Dad! Please... please wait for me.
'Kay! Let's go!

A Thief of Memories

Haha... you needn't look so nervous! I'm not setting you up for anything unreasonable. Just act as you normally would and you should be fine. -- The Singer of Secrets

(The Singer of Secrets gives you an elaborate bow in greeting, like a performer taking the stage to rapturous applause.)

Singer of Secrets
Ah. The hero of the hour takes a brief interlude! What can this humble bard do for you?

> Prompt: What should I do?

> On-screen text: You ask the Singer of Secrets what he'd like you to do.

Singer of Secrets
...What I'd like you to do? Hmm... Well, it's not that there's any particular thing you have to do. I'm simply interested in seeing how your story unfolds.
I've heard a great many stories, from the historical to the mythical to the personal, and it's been my experience that many fascinating tales sprout from the smallest of seeds.
Perhaps the hand of fate has been at work since we met. Maybe it even guided you to me!

(The Singer of Secrets gently clears his throat, smiling all the while.)

Singer of Secrets
You knoooow... we ARE coming up on Samhain, and children across the kingdom are already dreaming of that glorious night they'll go door to door getting candy and cookies at every house in town.
I know they'd thihnk it quite the treat if you were to hand them a few delectable confections. And perhaps in doing so, you'll pen the prologue to your Samhain tale!
It's never a bad idea to keep a few of these on you, especially at this time of year.

(The Singer of Secrets pulls out a handful of wrapped candies-- you're not sure from where-- and crams them into your pocket before you have a chance to object.)

Singer of Secrets
Trust me, you needn't be on the lookout, or do anything special. Just act as you normally would, and things will proceed as they ought.
Heehee. I'll see you later!

(Now that you've finished conversing with the Singer of Secrets, you should hand out candy to the children of Dunbarton as he suggested. If nothing else, you'll be a hero in their eyes.)

(You head back outside of the School to find some kids to give candy to.)

Spiky-haired child
Samhain, Samhain, Samhain time... Oh! Heehee. Hello, Big Bro/Big Sis (Character Name)!

> Prompt: Give the child candy

> On-screen text: The child lets out a piercing, sugar-powered cry of excitement.

Spiky-haired child
Yay! Wow, thanks! Oh, wait, I was supposed to say something, right? Um... Oh! Trick or treat!

(You gave candy to the excited, spiky-haired child.)

(You find the next child near the Dunbarton Office.)

Grinning Child
Wahhh! Meanine! If you don't give me candy on Samhain, Lymilark is gonna get you!

> Prompt: Give the child candy

> On-screen text: The grinning child does a little dance on the spot.

(When you give candy to the grinning child, their grin grows even bigger.)

Grinning Child
Wow, is this chocolate banana candy? My favorite! Thanks!

(You gave candy to the excited, grinning child.)

(You find the next child behind the church.)

Basket-Carrying Child
Heh heh heh... I already got a bunch of candy... just one more piece and I can become the Samhain Candy King!
Then my friends will all believe me when I tell them I hid the ultimate candy somewhere!

> Prompt: Give the child candy

> On-screen text: The basket-carrying child puts on a toy crown and shouts, "Huzzah!"

Basket-Carrying Child
I did it! I did it! I am the Candy King! (Character Name), I hereby appoint you Minister of Caramel!

(You gave candy to the excited, grinning child.)

(You find the next child a little offways in the alleyway.)

(A little boy peers at you through the eye-holes of a strange-looking pumpkin mask. He keeps the straps of his bag clenched in his tiny, uncalloused fists, as if it might slip away without a trace.)

Masked Child
Trick or treat!
Hey, how 'bout a trade? Gimme candy and I'll give you a cookie I baked myself. Huh? Is that not how trick or treat usually goes? But I worked really hard on these cookies... I promise you'll love it! Heehee!

> Prompt: Give the child candy or Just a minute, okay?

> Prompt: Give the child candy

Masked Child
Yay! This looks great! Thank you! Okay, here's the cookie I made. Try it! Hurry up and try it!

(You can't say no in the face of the boy's obvious excitement. You take a bite of the pumpkin-shaped cookie. It's pretty good! You can't go wrong with the taste of butter and sugar.)

(But, wait... what's that bitter aftertaste? Something feels off... but trying to figure out what feels like swimming in molasses. Is everything getting further away, or... are your eyes getting blurry?)

???
Oh no, what did I do? Argh, but... I can't think about that now.

(The kid takes off his mask, but you still can't seem to make out his face...)

???
I-I don't have a choice... Not if I wanna find Dad. I dunno how much longer I have until all my memories are gone.
So... before you wake up... here goes nothing.

(The kid doesn't stop muttering as he grabs a crystal ball from his bag and holds it up to your slack, still face.)

???
Hope this works... Yes! Heehee! The memories... I can see them, just like they said...
Okay! Gonna take a little peek at your memories. Um... sorry, Big Bro/Big Sis...

Shadow Mission: The Night Palala Disappeared

(...)

(You wake up in an unfamiliar place.)

(It's dark. The very air around you feels unstable, as if it could shatter to pieces at one wrong move. Not that that's a problem. Your body feels heavy enough that you don't feel like going anywhere. Where, exactly, are you?)

(It comes back to you: the child, the cookie. But then what? As nice as it seems to stay still, you'd better investigate.)

(Not too far ahead, you spot a tall, glowing white tree, with glowing orbs at its feet.)

(Glittering orbs are scattered like stars across the strange, insubstantial space.)

> Prompt: Reach out to touch one.

Times Remembered - Memory Lorna Pan.png
(...!)

> On-Screen Text: Is this... a memory?

(Lorna and Pan... That's how they looked the first time you met them, when you'd just arrived in Erinn. The scene appears before you for a moment, and then vanishes just as suddenly.)

> Prompt: Touch another one.

Times Remembered - Memory Nao.png
(...!)

> On-Screen Text: And here... the Soul Stream...

(Meeting Nao in the Soul Stream. There's no way you could've known then how important that moment would be... But there's no time to dwell on it. This memory, like the last one, appears and vanishes in a flash.)

(What... is this place?)

(What are these orbs, and why do they seem to contain your memories?)

(Not far away, a pumpkin appears.)

??? ...Found it.

(The pumpkin rolls toward the tree, and collides with it.)

(The closer that pumpkin gets to the orb under the tree, the dizzier you feel. It feels like someone's stirring up the thoughts in your head like soup in a pot.)

(More pumpkins appear.)

(The pumpkins are starting to swarm that glittering orb. You don't know why, but you're sure that you need to stop them from reaching it.)

> On-Screen Text: Take out the pumpkins approaching the Memory Orbs!

> Mission tooltip: Keep the pumpkins from approaching your memory.

(After defeating a wave:)

> On-Screen Text: You hear the sound of pumpkins rolling in!

(As you defeat the pumpkins, suddenly, a lot more of them appear at once, surrounding you on all sides. You are overwhelmed, and they run into you, knocking you out.)

(Meanwhile, in the real world...)

(The boy becomes more and more dejected as he continues scanning through memories. When he's done, he drops the crystal ball he was holding.)

The Kid
The Savior of the Goddess, the Dragon Knight, the Shadow Hero, the New Divinity, the Guardian of Erinn...
...What good is any of that if there's no memory of Dad?
I thought for sure if anyone could help, it'd be the Milletian famous for helping everyone... But I guess not. I should just... No! I don't have time for this. Just gotta figure something else out.
Oh! But, um, first...

(The kid takes a potion out of his bag and pours it gingerly in your mouth.)

The Kid
Okay. You'll wake up soon, I promise.
Um... Sorry again. But I really gotta find Dad.
I... Yeah. Sorry.

(MISSION END)

In Search of Vanished Footprints

Organize your thoughts as you follow the trail in search of the strange kid.

...

(You wake up slowly, vision swimming. You manage to sit up and look around, through it makes your head pound. There's no sign of the kid who gave you the cookie.)

...

(Maybe you'll feel better after you get some fresh air. Try going for a walk. Carefully go down the stairs towards the Town Square.)

> On-Screen Text: You're losing your balance. You can't run in this state.

(At the bottom of the stairs, you spot an unknown figure.)

(Eyes like pale purple gems bore into you with startling intensity. Her expression is even and unchanging, like the still, dark moments before sunrise. The wings on her cloak may put you in mind of freedom, but the celtic knots that entangle her clothes tell a different story.)

???
Milletian...

> Prompt: Who are you?

Sian
My name is Sian. I am an investigator from the underworld. I'm here to bring the spirit you encountered back to the underworld. However...
I see he has already fled the area.

(Sian considers you, tilting her head slightly. There's something unnerving in her regard.)

Sian
Ah, I see.
It seems you ate something with monkscrown and your soul was separated from your body. And then, I suppose, someone gave you an antidote.
...
Your mind has been tampered with. Someone went rummaging around in your memories.

(Sian's eyes dart towards the Dunbarton School before looking back at you.)

Sian
Hm.
You are now entangled in the fate of the dead spirit Aleyn.
So I believe our paths will cross again. ...

(Sian gives you a nod of farewell.)

Sian
For now, it is time for us to part.

(It seems Sian has nothing more to say to you. She has turned her attention to the gates of Dunbarton.)

(It seems you need to seek out someone who knows more about the Dunbarton School's crystal ball, whoever that could be. Hopefully, when you find them, they can help you with your tangled-up thoughts.)

(You go meet Stewart in the school.)

Stewart
Ah, salutations. What bring you here today?

> Prompt: Tell him about the memory thief

(As you tell the story of the memory thief to Stewart, he gives you a look of surprise.)

Stewart
...Wow. That's quite the story. If you don't mind, can I take a look?
Hmm...
Ah! Actually...
A long time ago, I heard of an interesting sort of magic that lets you peer into someone's memories through the use of a crystal ball.
Indeed-- the same sort of crystal balls we have in the school's library that allow one to pore over their own recollections.
The problem, you see, is that when someone tries to rifle through another's memories, the very act of looking tends to cause those memories to get all jumbled up. It tends to be a terrible headache for whoever's memories are being stolen.
Let's see... Just a moment, if you would.

(Stewart begins sifting through the books and potions that crowd the top of his desk.)

Stewart
A handful of ground Golden Herb root... Three dried frog legs, extra crispy... And three spoonfuls of Holy Water of Lymilark.
Then we pour the mixture into a Base Potion bottle and give it a vigorous shake to make sure everything is mixed...

> On-Screen Text: You hear the sound of Stewart's concoction fizzing.

(Stewart empties the brew into an empty bottle. As he shakes it, the contents begin to give off a strange light.)

Stewart
Great news, (Character Name)! I happened to have everything I needed to brew a remedy on hand.
...How much? Free, for you. You've done so much for Erinn that you deserve whatever boon I'm able to provide.
Now, if you'll just hold still for a second...

(Stewart uncorks the bottle and pours a portion of the tincture into his hand, then splashes it over your head.)

Stewart
There. I believe that should've done the trick. How do you feel? Is your head clearing up?

> On-Screen Text: You feel as light as a feather.

> Prompt: I feel much better.

Stewart
Glad to hear it! Still... who was it that did that to you, (Character Name)? Or rather, who COULD do thos to you, and why would they want to?
Hmm...
Oh!
So, I don't know if this will be of any help to you, but I was talking with Sister Kristell the other day and she told me a strange story.
It sounded like the residents of Port Cobh have begun seeing things that defy easy explanation. Perhaps it has something to do with what happened to you.
If you're curious, I encourage you to go see Kristell and hear more about it.
Anyway, I'm glad I was able to lend a hand. Hope the tip proves helpful, too. If there's anything else you need, you're always welcome here at the school.
Oh, and I've decanted the rest of the potion into a few bottles. You should take them with you-- they may come in handy on your journey. Now, I suppose I can't put off my work any longer, haha... Take care!

(Stewart gives you a nod as he bids you farewell.)

Stewart mentioned a curious story he heard from Kristell at the Dunbarton Church. Why not pay her a visit and see if you can learn more about this rumor?

(You follow Stewart's tip and head to the Dunbarton Church.)

Kristell
Welcome to the Dunbarton Church, (Character Name). Is there something I can help you with today?

> Prompt: Explain what has happened so far

Kristell
A mysterious child disappeared after... stealing memories? Do I have that right? And you thought to see me about it after Stewart mentioned the story I told him?
Hmm. I don't know if this has any relation to your situation, but I did hear about something out of the ordinary recently...
A resident of Port Cobh who was visiting Dunbarton mentioned to me that many people there have started seeing things they can't explain.
Most have been so startled they can't explain exactly what it is they saw, but the rumors seem to suggest ghosts.
Well... Now that I think about it, we're getting close to Samhain, so perhaps the dead are amusing themselves by making sport of the living.
Anyway, that's about all I can tell you. If you want to look into it more, you'll have to head out to Port Cobh yourself.
To start with, you should seek out someone who sees many of the people who pass through the town.

(Kristell takes out a Holy Water of Lymilark and carefully hands it to you.)

Kristell
Please, take care of yourself, (Character Name). May Lymilark's blessings always shine bright upon you.

Following Kristell's guidance, you should find someone who frequently sees people coming and going in Port Cobh.

(You speak with Uko, the trade helper of Cobh.)

> Prompt: Ask about people passing through Port Cobh

> On-Screen Text: You ask Uko about the stream of people who enter or leave Port Cobh each day.

Uko
Mm, yes, that's accurate. From the vantagee of our Trading Post, I see pretty much everyone who enters or leaves the town.

> Prompt: Ask if they've heard any strange rumors recently

Uko
Ah, so it's information you're after. That's fine-- it has value but no pesky weight, which makes it an excellent trade commodity. But of course, I have to follow the fundamental principles of commerce: you don't get something for nothing!
Here's the deal, (Character Name). It's a warm day, and poring over ledgers has left me parched. If you bring me a bottle of I-C Chill Water, I'd be glad to point you toward where you can hear all about a strange rumor.
See, this is no ordinary water-- it's a new beverage Siobhanin's been selling. I've heard it's lightly sweet and extremely refreshing-- and there's likely some truth to that, because it's been selling out daily. You have to be there when he opens the store each morning to procure a bottle.
Those who have been lucky enough to enjoy it say it's so invigoratingly cold that it makes you feel like yodeling from a snow-capped mountaintop. Now, I'm not ready to break out my lederhosen just yet, but I must admit, I AM quite curious. The problem is, my work here keeps me too busy to go to the General Shop before they sell out for the day.
You may be my only chance at having a sip, (Character Name).

(With a curt nod to see you on your way, Uko pulls out a heavy ledger. Flipping it open one-handed to exactly the right page, they continue writing numbers in a complicated-looking balance sheet.)

(At Uko's insistance, you should head to Port Cobh's General Shop and see if you can get your hands on a bottle of this 'I-C' Chill Water'.)

(You go buy I-C Chill Water from Siobhanin and return.)

Uko looks up from the thick trade ledger to see you returning. A toothy smile spreads across their face then they see the bottle of I-C Chill Water in your hand.

Uko
Hahaha! No one else could manage it, but I had a feeling you wouldn't disappoint, (Character Name). So... this is the famous I-C Chill Water everyone's talking about!

(Uko takes the bottle in hand, examining it from every angle.)

Uko
Unfortunately, we have a big shipment coming in today and getting our accounts in order can't wait, so I'll have to enjoy it later.
Now, you were curious about the strange rumor going around town, yes?
A few hours ago, a group passed through here and I overheard them talking about something odd they saw on the way back from Bangor.
It sounded like they weren't even in agreement about whether or not they HAD seen something-- some were absolutely certain they did, while others flatly denied it. The one thing they DID agree on, though, was that they all needed a couple rounds of drinks at Annick's Pub.
I saw them go in, but I haven't seen them come out yet, so unless they all crawled out the windows in a drunken stupor, you should still be able to find them there.
That's about as much direction as I can give you, (Character Name). That said...

(Uko steps closer to you, lowering their voice.)

Uko
You should keep your wits about you. These fellows-- they seemed like a rough bunch, even by trader standards.
Aaaanyway, I'll be sure to raise my figurative glass to you whenever I take that refreshing first sip of my I-C Chill Water!

Uko pointed you in the direction of Port Cobh's Pub, where you might find someone who can tell you more about the rumor.

(You head to the pub, who is full of people.)

(There's a suspicious-looking group of people talking noisily in the corner of the pub.)

> Prompt: Cautiously strike up a conversation

(You approach carefully, but don't even get a word out before the apparent leader of the group notices you and starts talking.)

Shady Group Leader
Look who's here! It's (Character Name), the famous Milletian! Talking to us! I may faint.

Shady Group Member 1
Wow! (Character Name)!

Shady Group Member 2
In our very own pub!

Shady Group Leader
Haha! So, what brings you over to our humble corner?

> Prompt: Ask about the rumor

> On-Screen Text: You ask the group about the strange rumor.

(When you mention the strange rumor, the leader's grin widens.)

Shady Group Leader
Hahaha! Of course! You're wondering about the suspicious object we saw.
Well... as much as we'd love to help the Milletian, we can't just give away what we know for nothing, can we? That's just common sense!

Shady Group Member 1
That's right!

Shady Group Member 2
Common sense, plain and simple.

> Prompt: What do you want?

> On-Screen Text: With trepidation, you ask what they want in exchange.

Shady Group Leader
You're pretty sharp, aren't you? Still, there's no need to look so suspicious! All we're looking for is a little entertainment. Why don't you a game with us? It's very simple!

> Prompt: A simple game?

Shady Group Leader
That's right, that's right! I'll shuffle some cards, and all you gotta do is pick the card with the right answer on it. If you do that, we'll tell you everything we know, free of charge!
But it's not exciting if nothing happens if you lose, is it? Hmm... In that case...
How about five million Gold?
That's all. You'll just need to pay us five million Gold if you lose.

Shady Group Member 1
What a fun game!

Shady Group Member 2
Wait! Boss! Could that game even be... too fair?

Shady Group Leader
So! Would you like to play, Milletian?

> Prompt: Play or Fight

> Prompt: Play

(It's an obvious scam, but if you don't play along, you'll never be able to get the information you need.)

Shady Group Leader
Why the long face, my friend? For you, I'll even give you three chances to find the right answer. Here, I'll shuffle!

(The leader spreads the cards out on the table.)

(You watch as the cards are shuffled, and make your choice.)

> On-Screen Text: ...Huh? I thought I had the right answer.

> On-Screen Text: Unfortunately, your choice was incorrect.

(You watch as the cards are shuffled, and make your choice again.)

> On-Screen Text: ...That's strange!

> On-Screen Text: Unfortunately, your choice was incorrect.

(You make your choice one more. It is still incorrect.)

> On-Screen Text: I thought I got the right answer... This must be some sort of trick.

(Weird, you could've sworn that was correct...)

Shady Group Leader
Hahaha! Oh well... I guess even the famous Milletian makes mistakes sometimes!

Shady Group Member 1
All right! Five million Gold it is!

Shady Group Member 2
An upstanding hero like you always keeps your promises, right?

Shady Group Leader
Okay, hand it over then, Sir/Madam!

(The shady woman holds her hands out, as if expecting you to pour five million Gold into them.)

(It was, as you suspected, a scam. Now what?)

> Prompt: Teach the scammers a lesson

Shady Group Leader
Haha, what's with that face? You're not gonna pay us? How dishonest!

Shady Group Member 1
I can't believe the big hero would be so deceitful!

Shady Group Member 2
Ugh! Everyone! Listen! (Character Name) is scamming innocent, hardworking folks again!

(Just when you're about to start Smashing heads...)

(...a group of robed figures, watching from the other side of the Pub, steps in.)

???
Hah, who's calling who a scammer here?
Hmph. That's like calling Ferghus reliable!

Shadow Mission: No Tricks Allowed!

??? (Pink-accented Robed figure)
Ugh. Everyone sees what you're doing. You're picking a fight with an innocent person.

Shady Group Leader
What? You think you can interfere with a fair bet between friends?

Shady Group Member 1, 2
Who do you think you are?

??? (White-accented Robed figure)
It wasn't fair. These guys were playing some kind of trick. I-I saw that for sure!

??? (Yellow-accented Robed figure)
Yeah, I saw that too!

??? (Purple-accented Robed figure)
There sure are a lot of witnesses. You still feel like stirring up trouble?

Shady Group Leader
What, so you guys wanna fight?

Shady Group Member 1, 2
You gonna fight us, huh?

??? (Pink-accented Robed figure)
Okay, if you really want to do this...

(A thunderbolt rings in the area.)

(One of the mysterious robed figures snaps their fingers and lightning strikes.)

(Another thunderbolt rings in the area.)

??? (Pink-accented Robed figure)
Look.

(Another thunderbolt rings in the area.)

??? (Pink-accented Robed figure)
Are you sure?

Shady Group Leader
Ugh. Why are you butting in? This has nothing to do with you!

??? (Pink-accented Robed figure)
Hmph, you wanna know why?

Times Remembered - Halloween Villains.png
> On-Screen Text: The mysterious group cast off their robes!

??? (Witch)
What a dumb question. We're not going to stand by and let you get away with mischief. So, what'll it be?

Shady Group Leader
Are you threatening us? W-we're not scared!

Shady Group Member 1
Scared? N-no way!

Shady Group Member 2
Um, guys, I'm scared...
Oh no! Sorry! I wasn't supposed to say that!

(The leader turns turns to glare at the member who spoke, but it's made it's made less convincing by the fact that her legs are shaking.)

??? (Witch)
Oh, yeah? Then what about this?

(Another thunderbolt rings in the area, this time knocking down the shady group.)

Shady Group
Ack!

(The group is stuck by a bolt of lightning. They all fall over in a screaming heap.)

??? (Witch)
Do you still want to fight?

Shady Group Leader
Ack! No, no! Wait! We're just um... trying to warn you about all the weird scams people are running these days! Now you'll know what to look out for!

> Prompt: Ask about the rumor again.

(Excuses, excuses... You ask again about the rumor.)

Shady Group Leader
Oh, of course! Last time we were in Bangor running games-- um, I m-mean, warning people about scams-- we saw this huge mirror!
It was so weird... It was huge, and just sitting there, but other people didn't seem to see it. I poked at it a bit, but it seemed really heavy and not that valuable, so we just left it there...

(...A huge mirror?)

(Could it have something to do with the rumor Kristell told you about?)

??? (Witch)
All done talking? Great. Get out of here. I don't want to breathe the same air as you crooks.

Shady Group Leader
Yes! Of course! We were actually about to go! Weren't we, fellows?

Shady Group Member 1, 2
Yes! Yes boss!

(MISSION END)

(The pink-haired witch smirks.)

??? (Carrie)
They had no chance against me, of course.

??? (Aislin)
U-um, it seemed like those people were really hurt, though...

??? (Bran)
You're really worried about them? You're something else, Aislin...

??? (Locke)
A-anyway! They ought to pay for tricking people, don't you think?

(The group finishes talking and turns to look at you expectantly.)

??? (Carrie)
You are...

> Prompt: Who...? or Guys! How have you been?

Carrie
No need to thank us, or anything. We just happened to be here... and it wasn't like we could sit around and do nothing. So...
It's just a coincidence that it helped you, or whatever.

Aislin
I'm just relieved it worked out. Heehee.

Bran
We did it again, did we?

Locke
Haha... I guesss so!

Carrie
...
What was that nonsense about a huge mirror on the way from Bangor to Port Cobh? Is that really gonna be useful to you?

Carrie
I guess I hope you find what you're looking for.

(Carrie shakes her head at you.)

Carrie
You must be exhausted. It's just like this wherever you go, isn't it?

(Carrie picks up an unopened bottle from the table and hands it to you.)

Carrie
Here, take it.

Aislin
Heehee... awww. Carrie.
She's right, through, (Character Name). I know you've got a lot on your plate, but you gotta take breaks every now and again!

Bran
You all... I suppose this is why I spend time with you.

Carrie
Wh-what? It didn't mean anything! What are you all talking about?

Locke
Heh... Carrie... It's kinda funny how bad you are at hiding your feelings...

Carrie
What would you know? Nothing! Dumb zombie!

Locke
Dumb?! Hey... I'm not dumb...

Bran
Hmm. Carrie, your temper seems hotter than usual today. I wonder why?

Carrie
Hot-tempered? I'll give you hot-tempered! How would you like a taste of my fireball, huh? It's gonna be a crit!

Locke
Augh! We're gonna die... The mean witch is gonna kill us!

Aislin
C-cut it out, you guys!

Annick
Hey, hey now. If you're gonna start slinging spells around, you're gonna have to do it outside.

(Better get going before you get banned from the pub.)

(Like Carrie said, you need to find the huge mirror on the way from Bangor to Port Cobh.)

The World Within the Mirror

So... were we any help? I heard they saw some weird mirror. Whatever it is you're looking for, I hope you find it. - Carrie

(You trace back the steps along the path towards Bangor. To the roadside, near the forest, you spot something strange.)

(Checking on the rumors you heard in Port Cobh, you come across a strange mirror. How did it get here? And how is it possible that it hasn't been noticed by more people?)

(The center of the mirror is obscured by a strange hazy light. Something about it seems like it wants to consume, rather than reflect.)

(...)

(Somewhere beyond the light, you hear a faint sound like the chiming of a bell.)

(You reach out gingerly and touch the mirror. Nothing happens.)

> Prompt: Call out a greeting or Sing a song or Cheer for the mirror

(While you're trying and failing to get the mirror to respond, you hear a familiar voice.)

(Sian Appears.)

(So, the Midnight Agent you met in Dunbarton, Sian, is here too...)

Sian
...As expected. Hello again.
So the rumors about you are accurate. You must be quite unusual, to be able to see this mirror clearly.

(Sian turns her gaze back to the mirror in question as she speaks.)

Sian
...Troublesome. The seal on this one... I have not seen the like.
I believe we may both find what we seek inside.

(Sian nods decisively. It seems she's done examining the mirror. She reaches her hand out to you.)

Sian
Take my hand, (Character Name).

(Sian doesn't wait for you to respond. She takes your hand and raises her other to the mirror. She moves it, slowly, as if exerting pressure against a great force. Slowly, little by little, the mirror starts to move...)

(You're still standing still, but you start to feel as if you're floating in midair. Somewhere, distantly, you hear a clock ticking, and the sound of bells...)

(You enter the Reflection of Remembrance. The area is dark. At the center of the area, on a huge, broken clock, Aleyn and Sian stand.)

(A child looks at you with eyes that seem as still and unchanging as stone. He keeps the straps of his bag clenched in his tiny, uncalloused fists, as if it might slip away without a trace.)

(Aleyn looks at you, and then Sian, and then you again.)

Aleyn
Augh! The Milletian! And a M-Midnight Agent! W-what? How'd you... How'd you get here?

Sian
This is a place of the dead. Of course a Midnight Agent can access it.
Hello, Aleyn. I am Midnigt Agent Sian. I am here to return you to the underworld.

Aleyn
W-wait! Wait, wait, wait! I can't! I can't go back yet!
M-Mr/Miss (Character Name)! Miss Midnight Agent! You gotta believe me, okay? I'm not here to cause any trouble!
I-I'm just here to find my dad! I gotta tell him something. It's really important! I was gonna go back to the underworld afterwards, I promise!

Sian
*sigh* Every spirit has a tale just like yours. However--

Aleyn
Just gimme until the end of Samhain!
Please! Just until Samhain's over! And then I'll go back, no matter what! But until then... Can I please look for my dad?
I, I went to the underworld before him, so... I think he might not be doing very well. I hate to think of him sad up there because of me...
But I... I don't have long, see, because... I think when I was alive I made some kinda deal, and it's making me lose my memories of him.
And I'm worried that soon... that soon I won't remember him at all. S-so! That's why I can't go back. I need to find him while I still can and tell him I'm okay! That's all.

> Prompt: ...What sort of deal?

> On-Screen Text: (You ask Aleyn about the deal he mentioned.)

(A shiver runs through Aleyn's body. It takes him a moment before he's able to speak again.)

Aleyn
It was when I... died. There was a fire. My dad and I were both home...
I knew... I knew I was dying. So I prayed. I prayed as hard as I could that my dad would live.
The last thing I remember was a voice in my head. It said it could save my dad in exchange for my memories of him.
Of course I said yes. Then... the next thing I saw was the underworld.

Sian
(Aleyn...)

Aleyn
My dad's not down there, so his life must've been saved, right? But because of the deal, I keep forgetting things.
I-I can't even remember his name. I think... I think by next year, I'll have forgotten everything about him.
You get it, right? It has to be this Samhain. I gotta tell him I'm okay!

(Aleyn clasps his hands together and looks at you with pleading eyes.)

Aleyn
P-please! I'm sorry about what I did before, with your memories! I swear I'll go right back to the underworld when I'm done! Please...
Please help me. Just until Samhain is over. I-I really need to find him.

> Prompt: I will help or Not quite yet...

> Prompt: I will help

> On-Screen Text: You can't say no to Aleyn's pleading face.

(You haven't even finished nodding before Aleyn rushes forward and throws his arms around you, teary eyed.)

Aleyn
*sob* Th-thank you! Thank you so much...

(Sian looks at the two of you for a moment before sighing heavily.)

Sian
I should not allow it, but...
You have only until the end of Samhain, Aleyn. Remember that.

Aleyn
Yes! Thank you! Thank you! I can't thank you enough!

(Aleyn dries his eyes with his sleeve, bobbing his head rapidly as he thanks you and Sian.)

What the Dead Remember

Thanks for your help! But...how can I find memories tied to my dad? - Aleyn

(Aleyn, who was buoyed by the promise of help, seems to have lost hope again. His eyes are dim and his shoulders are slumped.)

Aleyn
I... I gotta tell you something. The truth is, I don't even know where to start. I've already forgotten almost everything about my dad...

Sian
Hm...

(Sian examines the bells around her as she speaks.)

Sian
These bells... I believe they are your memories.

Aleyn
Y-yeah, that sounds right. The lights have been turning off one by one as I forget things...

(Sian crosses her arms.)

Sian
To reawaken a spirit's memories... We shall have to find a way.

Aleyn
Can you really do that?

Sian
I have heard tell of spirits who choose never to go to the underworld. They are said to appear sometimes around Samhain.

Aleyn
Oh! They might know things, then! Maybe we should talk to them!

(Aleyn looks at you beseechingly.)

> Prompt: Nod your head

> On-Screen Text: You immediately give in to Aleyn's hopeful eyes.

Sian
I know of a few spirits we may ask. Since there are three of us, we should each choose one to investigate.

Aleyn
Okay! Heehee!

Sian
(Character Name), you may make the first selection.

(Sian removes a notepad and pen from her pockets. She makes a list of three names.

1. Belisha (Abandoned Milester Mansion)
2. Alfie (Tir Chonaill Tomb)
3. Laighlinne (Port Ceann)

> On-Screen Text: Where do you want to go?

> Prompt: Go to the Abandoned Milester Mansion or Go to the Tir Chonaill Graveyard or Go to Port Ceann or Let me think about it.

Aleyn
Okay! Sian and I will take the others. Let's meet back here afterwards, okay?

Sian
Very well.

Aleyn
Thank you so much, everyone! Take care, okay?

(You head back to the Reflection and meet the others.)

(After gathering information from the dead, you return to the Reflection of Remembrance to meet Aleyn and Sian. They seem to have gotten back before you.)

Aleyn
Yay! Everyone's back! Did anyone hear anything? Anything important?

(Aleyn's face falls and he shuffles his feet before he continues speaking.)

Aleyn
...'cause I didn't.

Sian
I am afraid I, too, found nothing of import.

Aleyn
What about you, big bro/sis?

> Prompt: Relay what you heard

(You tell Aleyn and Sian that while you didn't find any memories, you heard that certain items could be used as a cipher for memories in order to view the past.)

Aleyn
Ah... a cipher for memories?

Sian
I think I have heard of something of that nature.
...Aleyn, do you have anything that may work as a cipher?

Aleyn
Um... I dunno... Do I have something of Dad's? Um...

(Aleyn falls silent for a while. His whole face scrunches up in concentration. After a while, his eyes grow wide.)

Aleyn
Oh! Oh! I think I know!
I was having trouble because I've forgotten so much, but I do remember a song he used to play for me!
And I think the score might be... around here.

(Aleyn slips his hand into a darkened bell. It chimes gently as he jostles it.)

(After digging around for a while, Aleyn pulls his hand out triumphantly. Clutched in it is a music score that's seen better days. You can barely read what's written on it.)

Sian
(...!)

Aleyn
Got it! Here it is! I... don't remember the tune exactly, but I definitely remember the title!
It's named after me! The song is called Aleyn.

(Aleyn drifts off into silence. Sian clears her throat to get his attention back.)

Sian
We must try to restore this music score, so that it can become a cipher for your memories.

Aleyn
Yes! That should work. But um... I'm not sure where to go for something like that. Do you know?

> Prompt: Ferghus in Tir Chonaill? or Irusan in Crom Bas? or Someone in the Bard Camp?

> Someone in the Bard Camp?

Aleyn
The Bard Camp? I didn't know there was a place like that, but it sounds perfect!

Sian
That is a good idea. The bards congredate on the shores of Abb Neagh Lake, correct?

Aleyn
Heehee, you're the best, big bro/sis!
Let's get going! We don't have time to wait around!

(Follow Aleyn and Sian to the Bard Camp, and find a way to restore the old music score.)

(You head to the Bard Camp.)

Aleyn
Wow! So this is the Bard Camp, huh? It looks so cheery and welcoming! I wanna set up a tent here too!

Sian
We most certainly do not have time for that.

Aleyn
I-I know! I know that!

Yvona
Hello. Is there something I can help you with?

> Prompt: Ask how to restore the music score

Yvona
You're looking to restore an old music score, you say? Hmm...
Tegau is the one you'll want to speak to about a project like that.
...Is there anything else you need? If not, I'll get back to my practice.

Aleyn
Huh... Well, I guess not everyone's friendly, even in a place like this.

Sian
Do you believe strangers have an obligation to be friendly to everyone that they meet?

Aleyn
Um, I guess not... A-anyway, let's go talk to Tegau!

(You should seek out Tegau, a longtime resident of the Bard Camp.)

Tegau
Ehe... Ah, these old knees of mine are acting up today. So, what bring you here?

> Prompt: Can you restore this music score?

(You ask Tegau if she can restore the old music score.)

Tegau
Oho, what's that again? You want me to divine your fortune? In my younger days, I used to make quite the living for myself doing that, but I'd need my crystal ball...

(It seems she misheard you. Raising your voice, you once again ask Tegau if she can restore the old music score.)

Tegau
Oh! Well, that's another matter entirely! Apologies. I fear my hearing isn't quite what it used to be, eheehee.
Hmm... May I take a look at this music score?

> Prompt: Give her Aleyn's music score

(You carefully hand Aleyn's sheet music to Tegau.)

Tegau
Mm... Dearie me! You weren't kidding when you said it was an old score. Look here; it's quite worn and faded in many places.

Aleyn
(Please, please, please...)

Tegau
Still... I don't think it's beyond repair. I should be able to restore it.

Aleyn
Hooray! Thank you! I'm so glad.

Tegau
Judging by your reaction, I presume this isn't just your average music. There's a story behind it, I'd wager.

Aleyn
Yes. I'll be counting on you!

Tegau
Now, let's see. In order to restore this score...
I'll need 1 Fine Leather and 1 Music Score Restorative Potion to perform the work.
You can buy Music Score Restorative Potions from Ailla, or try your hand at making one yourself with a special skill.

Aleyn
F-fine Lleather? Music Score Restorative Potions? What are those?

Sian
...Hmm. I don't have anything of value to this world.

(Looking troubled, Aleyn and Sian turn their heads toward you with expectant gazes.)

(It appears it's your turn to leap into action. Gather 1 Fine Leather and 1 Music Score Restorative Potion and bring them to Tegau.)

Tegau
There you are. Now, let's see what you've brought me.
There's 1 Fine Leather... and I can see the glint off the bottle of Music Score Restorative Potion. Excellent-- that should be everything I need.
All right, let's get to work...

(Tegau carefully applies the Fine Leather to the back of the brittle old music score, then sprinkles the Restorative Potion over it.)

(You watch in amazement as new life is breathed into the old music score. The parchment grows strong and pliable once again, and the faded notes become as clear as the day they were penned.)

Aleyn
Wow, she was able to completely restore the score!

Tegau
Here you go, dearie. It's still a but damp from the potion, but it should be completely readable when it dries out in a few hours.

Aleyn
Heehee... Thank you so much, Tegau!

Tegau
Don't mention it! It was my honor to handle such a cherished old piece of music. I hope its song will bring back many a precious memory to you.

Aleyn
Yes, I... I think it will! Thank you!

(Tegau slowly turns toward Sian and continues speaking, her voice now softer.)

Tegau
Now, for you...

Sian
...Hm?

(Tegau whispers something to Sian.)

> On-Screen Text: Tegau whispers, her voice difficult for you to make out.

Tegau
...noticed... but... beyond... part to play...

Sian
What's your point?

Tegau
The rules...
...I've seen...
Maybe it's how...

Sian
...I think that's enough.

Tegau
heh... I suppose that's all you need. Well, off you go! You've surely got other things that need doing today, as do I.

(Tegau shakes her hands, waving you off with a smile.)

(Aleyn carefully examines every inch of the restored score.)

Aleyn
It looks... perfect! It looks perfect! But, uh... how do we make it into a cipher for memories?

> On-Screen Text: You sense someone else listening.

Ailla
Oh! I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to eavesdrop. I've just been hearing that phrase a lot lately. A cipher for memories...

Sian
Impeccable timing.

Ailla
I think I have information that'll help, but...
I'm sorry. I hate to do this, but... I need your word that you'll help me before I give it to you. After the recent storm, the Bard Camp is in bad shape, and we don't have enough hands...

(Sian casts a solemn look around the Bard Camp.)

Sian
We are lacking time, but... I'll accept your conditions. Aleyn and I will lend our aid however we are able.
While we are doing so, (Character Name), I'll leave it to you to look into the cipher.

Aleyn
Um, yes! What Sian said!

Sian
In that case, please meet us back in the mirror when you are finished.

Ailla
Heh, thanks, everyone. I'm... relieved to have your help. Let me tell you what I heard.
A traveler passed through here and told me about an odd archaeologist they met with a marionette assistant.
The traveler was seeking a lost childhood memory, and the archaeologist was able to create a cipher for them. I hear this archaeologist is generally hard to find, but sometimes teaches classes in Rath Royal Castle.
And, in fact, she should be there right now, if the traveler had the right schedule. So that's my advice: go to Rath Royal Castle to find this archaeologist.

Aleyn
Okay! You can leave the Bard Camp to Sian and me, then! Go meet this archaeologist and find us in the mirror when you're done.
By that point I think the ink should be dry on the score, too!

Sian
Make haste. Time is of the essence.

Aleyn
Yes! Let's go! Time waits for no one! ...Hm, is that something Dad used to say?

(As Ailla suggested, go to Rath Royal Castle and meet the archaeologist to ask about a memory cipher.)

(Her lilac hair, tied back to accommodate her nomadic lifestyle, swishes like leaves on the breeze. The large bag and old book hanging from her waist speak to her curiosity about the world. Her independent nature comes through in her confidence and easygoing smile.)

Brielle
Oh, hello!

Brielle
Hah. So, what can we do for you, (Character Name)? As happy as I am to see you, we don't have very long.

> Prompt: It has to do with a Memory Cipher...

> On-Screen Text: You ask Brielle about Memory Ciphers.

(When you mention the words "memory cipher", Brielle nods, eyes lit up in understanding.)

Brielle
Oh, a Memory Cipher!

Brielle
Well, let's see...
I don't think that will be a problem at all, heehee.
Can I take a closer look, (Character Name)?

> On-Screen Text: You hand the restored music score over to Brielle.

(Brielle holds the music score with both hands and closes her eyes. She stays that way for a while, silence heavy with the weight of her concentration.)

Brielle
Ah, this score holds so many precious memories. That much is obvious.
They don't seem like your memories, though, (Character Name).
Well, I assume you're trying to help someone as usual. Heehee!
Give me a moment.

(Brielle begins chanting an incantation of some sort under her breath. After some time...)

Brielle
It is finished, (Character Name). I have brought the memories to the surface of this music score.
Play it to the owner of the memories and they will unfold for you both.

(Brielle gives the music score back to you.)

(Brielle reaches into an inner pocket and takes out a yellow flower)

Gillach
I-it's not just Brielle! I cast a blessing for luck on it. (Character Name), I wish you all the best.
I hope we meet again someday.

Brielle
Heehee, (Character Name). As brief as our meeting was, I hope we were helpful to you.

(Brielle and Gillach give you twin nods of farewell.)

(You hold the music score Brielle gave you in your hands. It feels as if a gentle breeze is blowing through your mind, stirring your thoughts towards something.)

(You close your eyes, and let it take you where it will.)

Boy
Dad!
Dad! Hey, Dad!

Adult
What is it? What's going on?

Boy
Um! I closed my eyes and counted a hundred sheep like you said, but I still can't sleep!
Can you play that song? You know, the one I like? Please?

Adult
You never miss an opportunity to ask for that song, do you? Why don't we take a little break from it?

Boy
But it's my favorite! I love it more than anything! 'Cause you wrote it for me, Dad!

Adult
...
...You really like it that much, huh? Sure, I'll play it.

Boy
Yay! Heehee! I can't wait to hear it!

...

(No matter how hard you concentrate, you can't hear anything else.)

(Is that Aleyn and his dad? You might find out more if you go back to the Reflection of Remembrance in the mirror and play the music score for Aleyn.

As Time Slips Away

Were you able to learn anything about the Memory Cipher? Sian and I have returned after helping out at the Bard Camp, so we'll be waiting for you in the usual place! -- Aleyn

(Armed with your new knowledge, you return to the Reflection of Remembrance.)

(Aleyn and Sian look up when you enter. Aleyn's expression is excited. Sian's looks strangely mournful.)

Aleyn
You're back, you're back! Did you meet the archaeologist?

> Prompt: Yes, and I got the cipher.

> On-Screen Text: You nod cheerfully at Aleyn.

Aleyn
Wow! I-I've been waiting for this! My dad... I'll be able to see his face!

(Aleyn's so excited he can't sit still. Sian looks at him, unsmiling.)

Sian
(... Yes... Finally.)
(Please, Aleyn... Be ready.)

(You relay Brielle's instructions for the cipher to Aleyn and Sian.)

Aleyn
Since it's a song my dad wrote for me, I'll be able to see him when we play it. That makes sense! Let's do it. I-I'm ready!

> Prompt: Play the music. or Not quite yet...

> Prompt: Play the music.

(You take out your instrument. Aleyn gives you a determined nod and closes his eyes tightly.)

Shadow Mission: Invisible Night

...

(You carefully pick out the melody written on the restored score.)

(...)

(A scene starts to unfold, vibrating into being with each beautiful note.)

(It is nighttime. You, Sian, and Aleyn can see three children talking excitedly to each other. One has brown eyes. The other is tall. The third, you cannot see properly. As you witness the memory, you recognize the town as Port Cobh.)

Brown-eyed Friend
Hey! Hey, guys!
Don't go home yet! I just remembered. Today is Samhain, right? It's a perfect day to stay out late!
Are you coming or what?

(The kids all chime in with agreement, except for one kid, who's still and quiet.)

Brown-eyed Friend
Oh, right...

Tall Friend
You... I forgot.

Brown-eyed Friend
You have to take care of your dad... So I guess you can't...

Tall Friend
That's too bad. But, hey, the rest of us still should!

???
N-no, wait! It's okay, I can stay too!

Brown-Eyed Friend
Wow! Really?!

???
Yeah! Um, my dad said I could stay out late today! Because of the holiday, like you said.
(Sorry for lying, Dad, but... just this once is okay, right?)

Brown-eyed Friend
Nice! It's been so long since we've all been able to do this. This is gonna be the best night ever!

Tall Friend
Heehee, yeah! What first? You wanna play hide-and-seek? It's so much better in the dark!

???
Yeah, let's go!

Aleyn
Wh-what is this? Is this really a memory? It doesn't seem like it has anything to do with my dad...

(Your vision blurs. You see a house, small but well-kept. Another blur.)

(...)

(You're inside the house now.)

(Before you, inside the house, is the figure of a grown man. He lurches as he coughs. Once again, you're unable to see any distinct facial features.)

???
*cough* *cough* Any minute now... he'll be back.
Gotta put the kettle on.

(The man carefully begins preparing a pot of chrysanthemum tea.)

> On-screen text: A shock goes across Aleyn's face, like he's remembered something.

> On-screen text: The shock reverberates from Aleyn to the surroundings, and everything starts to shake...

Aleyn
No, no, no... This isn't right. This isn't happening.

???
Ugh, my back. When's he gonna be back? Getting late...

Aleyn
No! No, it can't...

(The screen flashes red.)

(Aleyn gasps. He shudders. He falls.)

(The scene blurs to nothing. You hear the shriek of the boiling kettle, on and on in empty space.)

(Your fingers feel numb. It's hard to tell how much time has passed, or if time is passing. The nothingness around you buzzes and shudders.)

...

> On-screen text: From somewhere far away, you hear Sian.

Sian
...(Character Name)! (Character Name!)

> Prompt: Sian?

Sian
Aleyn's in shock. His mind can't sustain this space any longer.
It's collapsing. We must not be here when it does. We have to go, now.

> Prompt: I need to go back for Aleyn!

Sian
No. You have to leave him. There is still more truth for him to face.
This whole space IS Aleyn. Even if it collapses entirely, his soul will not be harmed.

(Sian reaches out her hand to you, a frantic echo of the first time you entered the mirror.)

Sian
There's no time! We have to go.

> Prompt: Take Sian's hand

(You grab Sian's hand and feel the now-familiar floating sensation. Then...)

(MISSION END)

(You regain awareness in front of the mirror.)

(You're out. You both escaped. Sian stands up, sighing, and brushes off her clothes in a few sharp movements.)

Sian
The space inside the mirror has collapsed completely. If we had been just a bit slower...
You must have questions, (Character Name). Ask them.

> Prompt: Is Aleyn okay?

> On-Screen Text: You anxiously ask after Aleyn's well-being.

Sian
The place we were... it was Aleyn's own inner world. His soul cannot be destroyed by his own creation.
However... we should leave him be, for a time. He has been flooded with forgotten memories. He will need time to organize his thoughts.
We have truths to face as well, in the meantime.
Do you remember the place you saw in your memory? Can you describe it?

> Prompt: Tell her what you remember.

(In Aleyn's memories, you saw a port town. A familiar port town. Its name was...)

(That town, awash in the sound of the ocean waves. You tell Sian you think it was Port Cobh, and she nods.)

Sian
Yes.
That is where we will find our truth. The house in the memory.
That's where you'll learn everything.

(Sian, finished speaking, turns sharply on her heel and begins walking in the direction of Port Cobh. You'd better go too, and find the house from the memory, as she advised.)

(You quickly go to Port Cobh and find the house in the memory. Sian is already there, standing near a man you haven't met.)

(A pale man looks at you with forlorn eyes. His wispy gray hair is reminiscent of a dust bunny floating in a sunbeam. His demeanor is as warm and welcoming as a ray of Palala's light, but it never quite reaches his eyes, which are cold and distant as the light of Ladeca.)

???
*cough* *cough* Now, who could that be?
Been quite a while since I've had any guests.

(The man takes out two teacups and pours tea into them for you and Sian. The floral fragrance fills the air with warmth.)

???
Try this. It's chrysanthemum tea. Good for the lungs. I can't go a day without it, haha.

> Prompt: Sip the tea.

(You blow gently on the hot tea and then take a sip. Warmth spreads through you.)

???
Might be rude to ask, but would you perhaps be a Milletian?

> Prompt: How did you know?

???
Well, I've lived long enough to hear some stories. And some of 'em were even about you, haha!
*cough* *cough*

(The man looks at Sian. Sian barely moves, but you notice her tense slightly, as if his gaze has shaken her somehow.)

Sian
(Iwan... you've grown.)

Iwan
So, you're Erinn's famous hero. And you, young lady?

Sian
For now, you may think of me as the Milletian's assisstant.
There is not much I can tell you about myself, but...
I may not look it, but I have lived longer than you.

Iwan
*cough* *cough*... Hah. Well, coming from a Milletian's assistant, I can believe that.
So. Hero, hero's helper. What can I do for you today?

> Prompt: I have a question.

Iwan
A question! Well, I hope I can answer, then.

> Prompt: Did you lose a son long ago?

(As delicately as possible, you ask him if he lost a young son. His brow furrows, and he clears his throat.)

Iwan
Heh. Why are you asking me that, of all things?
I think you may have the wrong old man.
I never had a son to begin with.
Haha... I never married or had any children, sons or otherwise.

> Prompt: So you have no family?

(You carefully ask him if he has no family. Iwan smiles a melancholy smile.)

Iwan
Hah. I still don't know why you want to know, but...
*cough* *cough* My last living family... Well, it's ancient history, now.
And it's going to be a long story. But, if you're sure you've got time to hear an old man's woes, I'll tell you.

> Prompt: Of course.

Iwan
Hmm. Where to start? Well, the house you're standing in burned down, once. Rebuilt it afterwards, obviously, haha.
Before that, my father and I lived here together.
*cough* *cough* ...He was a good father.
My lungs have been weak since I was young, but he helped me grow up strong. He made sure no one ever discouraged me from living the life I wanted to live.
But then... He started to forget things. Little things, first, but then important ones. Promises we made.
Some days he acted like my father, but some days he acted like a child. Sometimes he called me Dad. I didn't know what was happening. At first, I thought it was a game he was playing.
By the time I realized there was something wrong... Well, the Healers said it had progressed too far. There was nothing to be done.

(Iwan's voice is calm and steady, but his gaze is fixed on the floor.)

Iwan
Then, one night, on Samhain...

> Prompt: Listen to Iwan's story. or Not quite yet...

> Prompt: Listen to Iwan's story.

Iwan
Taking care of my father... I found it exhausting, to tell you the truth. One day, I didn't come home when I said I would. And that day...

(You listen as Iwan recounts a scene that sounds very familiar.)

Shadow Mission: A Story Buried in the Heart

??? Hey! Hey, guys!

(You see the same scene than in the cipher, except this time, you can make out the features of the third kid.)

Brown-eyed Friend
Don't go home yet! I just remembered. Today is Samhain, right? It's a perfect day to stay out late!
Are you coming or what?

(The kids all chime in with agreement, except for one kid, who's still and quiet.)

Brown-eyed Friend
Oh, right...

Tall Friend
You... I forgot.

Brown-eyed Friend
You have to take care of your dad... So I guess you can't...

Tall Friend
That's too bad. But, hey, the rest of us still should!

Young Iwan
N-no, wait! It's okay, I can stay too!

Brown-Eyed Friend
Wow! Really?!

Young Iwan

Brown-eyed Friend
Yeah! Iwan, you can seek first! Heehee, let's go!

Young Iwan
Yeah! I'm gonna start counting...

> On-screen text: Let's play now! Iwan will be the seeker!

> On-screen text: Find our hidden friends! Let's play for a while...

> (Mission Info: Find your friends! One of them likes to hide behind pillars, and one might be near the well...)

(Iwan quickly finds the tall friend behind a pillar.)

Tall Friend
Oh! You found me! Come on, Iwan. You're too good at this.

> On-screen text: Haha, found out! Okay, onto the next...

(Iwan continues to search and finds his brown-eyed friend next to the well.)

Brown-eyed Friend
I really thought I had the perfect spot! Wow, Iwan.

Tall Friend
Hahaha, Iwan! Fine, you got me.

Brown-eyed Friend
So who's gonna go seek next?

Tall Friend
Um, how about... you!

Brown-eyed Friend
Heh heh. Yeah! It's my turn to show off my skills!

Tall Friend
You couldn't find us even if we were as tall as the lighthouse. Hahaha!

(The scene briefly fades to a black screen.)

...

Iwan
My friends and I were running around the village, being hooligans. I... I don't remember exactly when I heard the first scream. I didn't think much of it. But I remember the moment when an adult ran over to tell us a house was on fire.

Brown-eyed Friend
Ugh, what's that smell?

(When the scene fades back in, it's blurred.)

> On-screen text: I-I can't see anything. Is that smoke?

Port Cobh Resident
*cough* *cough*
Kids, stay back! There's a fire!

Tall Friend
A fire? Hey, she said there's a fire!

Brown-eyed Friend
It's coming from... Iwan, isn't that near your place?

(The screen fades out again.)

(Iwan stops speaking abruptly. He's staring into the distance, face twisted up in pain.)

(...)

(Wait until Iwan calms down a bit before you talk to him again.)

(MISSION END)

(You wait for a few moments before speaking to Iwan again.)

Iwan
Where was I? ...Right. My friends and I were running around the village, being hooligans. I... I don't remember exactly when I heard the first scream. I didn't think much of it. But I remember the moment when an adult ran over to tell us a house was on fire.
I don't know how I knew, but I knew, from that very moment, that it was my house.

(Iwan's eyes well up. He closes them tiredly as he continues his story.)

Iwan
By the time I got home, it was much too late.

Times Remembered - House Fire.png
Young Iwan
Let go! Let go of me! Dad! Dad's in there! Let go!

Port Cobh Resident
Iwan, no! No, you can't! Please listen!

Young Iwan
Dad! No! Let me-- *sob* Dad...

Iwan
...
The whole house burned to ash. They said the cause looked like a kettle left unattended by the fire.
When I heard that... Well, this might sound like a child's fantasies, but... That's when I knew that I was to blame for my father's death.
My dad made chrysanthemum tea for me every night when I came home. For my lungs.
...
So much time has passed since then. So many of the intervening years are hazy and gray in my memory. But that day is as vivid as ever. The light of the flames. The smell of the smoke. And the guilt.
My father died because of me.
...
As I grow older, I think more and more about the afterlife. If there is one... I know I don't deserve to see my father there.

(Iwan sighs heavily, staring off somewhere over your shoulder. He's as far away from you as another person can be, sitting in the same small room.)

Iwan
*cough* *cough* Excuse me. I said it would be long, didn't I? But you probably didn't expect something so maudlin.
Did I answer your question?

> Prompt: ...Yes. or ...It was not what I expected.

Sian
Now that we have heard your story, I believe we have something to tell you as well.

Iwan
Oh yeah? And what would that be?

Sian
I'm afraid there's something we must take care of before we can say. We will be returning soon.
...Isn't that right, (Character Name)?

(Sian gives you a meaningful look.)

> Prompt: Nod along with Sian

> On-screen text: You go along with Sian's signal, nodding.

Iwan
I see. Hero business, I'm sure. Well, it was nice to have guests... Thank you for listening.

Sian
Thanks are not needed. We asked.

Iwan
Haha, if you say so.
(cough) (cough) Okay then. I'll see you again soon, I guess.

Sian
...Yes. We will.

A Somber Greeting

I'm sure that Aleyn knows the truth by now, and so he must grapple with it in whatever way he can. Be that as it may, we don't have much time left, so let's take care of the rest.

(You follow Sian outside.)

Sian
Do you understand?
Do you understand the truth I was talking about? The truth we must face?
I am sure Aleyn knows by now, as well. There's no way to hide from it.

> Prompt: You seem like you knew from the beginning.

Sian
Did I?

> Prompt: You ask if Sian knew the truth all along.

Sian
...Hm.

(Sian looks away, gaze unreadable. After a moment, she looks back at you.)

Sian
There's no time for that now, is there?
We need to return to the space inside the mirror and find Aleyn. Let's go.
Here.

(Sian reaches her hand towards you. The motion has become familiar.)

Sian
...Is there some delay?

(You take Sian's hand. The floating sensation comes instantly. Then...)

(You are warped to the Reflection of Remembrance. Aleyn lies in the center of the area, unconscious.)

(Aleyn's not responding to anything. You can barely hear him breathing.)

Sian
He is lost in a deeper memory.
I can send you where he is, but I cannot follow.
You will need to find him there, and bring him back. Are you ready?

> Prompt: I am ready or Not quite yet...

> Prompt: I am ready

Sian
Good. We need to hurry. Sit down.

(Sian puts her hand on your forehead and begins to chant, though it's no spell you've ever heard before.)

(For a moment, you feel as if a force is pushing you backwards... and then, suddenly, you stop. You hang, for a moment, as if in the air, and then you're hurtling down...)

Shadow Mission: Ritardando of Oblivion

(...)

(It feels like you might fall forever. But, at last, you begin to slow.)

(As soon as your feet touch the ground, the scene around you comes into focus.)

(You are still in the Reflection of Remembrance, but something is new: glowing orbs, scattered around the area.)

...!

(Faint echoes of Aleyn's energy are all around you, through Aleyn himself seems to have disappeared deeper in.)

(These fragments look familiar. They're almost like the ones you tried to protect from the pumpkin.)

(Maybe, if you collect enough scattered memories, it will help you find Aleyn.)

> On-Screen Text: Tap the shiny orbs to collect them all!

(The clock hands start to move, counter-clockwise. You avoid them and grab the orbs, one by one.)

> On-Screen Text: After collecting all the Memory Orbs, Aleyn appeared! Give him the orbs you collected.

(You check on Aleyn, who is curled up into a ball.)

Aleyn
(Character Name)... what are you doing here? It... would be better if you left.
Why... why did I do... any of this?
Iwan went through so much hardship... too much for a young boy. All because of me. There's no way... There's no way I can face him again.

> Prompt: Iwan feels guilty too.

> On-Screen Text: You tell Aleyn about how Iwan was when you spoke to him.

Aleyn
...Iwan? Why would he feel guilty?
He has no reason to feel guilty about me...

> Prompt: He misunderstands what happened that night.

Aleyn
A misunderstanding? What do you mean?

> Prompt: Iwan thinks he killed you.

Aleyn
What? But that's not... How? Iwan...

> Prompt: Give the memory fragment to Aleyn

(You carefully hand the delicate fragments of memory over to Aleyn.)

(The screen flashes white.)

Aleyn
*gasp* What... *gasp* What is this?
(Character Name)?

(Aleyn finally manages to look you in the eye.)

Aleyn
You know, I...
I...
I...
I was... scared.
I still am scared. I'm scared to accept that my son suffered, because of me, and all the ways I let him down. And the mistake I made, when I made that deal... It's just one more way I failed him. How can I bear it?
So I'm scared...
...But thanks to you, I can face it.
You've reminded me why I can't give in to despair.
Thank you. I remember, and I think... I'm ready to accept the truth...

(As Aleyn finishes speaking, your surroundings are suffused, and then consumed, by a bright white glow.)

(You close your eyes against the light. Somewhere far away, you hear Sian's voice.)

(MISSION END)

(When you come to, the Reflection of Remembrance looks entirely changed; broken clocks are repaired, some of them floating, the hourglasses's sands sparkle within their confines, the sycamores at the entrance are lively, orange leaves gently falling, and the whole area is bathed in light.)

(Aleyn slowly comes back to his senses, blinking as he looks back and forth between you and Sian.)

Sian
*sigh* It worked...

Aleyn
(Character Name), Sian.

Sian
Hm. You sound more adult already.
Not that you've changed too much.

Aleyn
Heh, maybe not. Even though I got all my memories back, I still look the same, after all.

(Aleyn scaratches his head, looking a bit embarassed.)

Sian
Some spirits become that which they believe themselves to be, if the belief is earnest.
I know a member of the Cinnsealach family who exists that way, as well.

Aleyn
Should I... know who that is? Ah, it doesn't matter. I should be thanking you both.
Now that I know the truth...
I will go back to the underworld, as promised.

(A troubled expression flickers across Sian's face for a split second. She closes her eyes, deep in thought.)

Times Remembered - Sian and Tegau.png
Tegau
...And you.

Sian
...Hm?

Tegau
Of course, I noticed there was something about you. But the more I talk to you, the more it seems to go beyond what I expected. Heh. I think you have an interesting part to play in the future.

Sian
What's your point?

Tegau
Haha, so impatient! Let me give you some advice.
The rules are important, but sometimes you need to listen to your heart.
Sometimes the powers above let go of people's mistakes. I've seen it several times, in my life. Maybe they're being generous, or maybe it's just too much of a bother, heh.
Or, maybe, it's how they show us their love...

Sian
...I think that's enough.

Sian
(Why did I remember that now?)
(It's unnecessary. I... I already know what to do.)

(Sian opens her eyes, looking at Aleyn with a steady stare.)

Sian
Hm. Your bravery...
You seem to have lost the bravery that allowed you to escape the underworld.
...
You know the rules. If the dead leave the underworld and create change in the living world...
You know the punishment that awaits them, do you not, Aleyn?

Aleyn
..Yes.

Sian
But what if... What if the change was caused by someone other than the spirit in question? Then the rule would not apply.

Sian
What do you mean?

> Prompt: Do you have something in mind?

> On-Screen Text: You ask Sian what she's thinking.

Sian
...Just trust me for a little while. (Character Name), can you bring me a Dream Catcher?
Once you do, I will tell you my idea.
Hurry. There is not much time left until the end of Samhain.

Aleyn
...What's going on in Sian's head?

(There's no way to be sure what Sian is planning, but... for now, it's probably best to play along. A Dream Catcher... aren't those made by who live in Iria's jungle?)

(You obtained a Dream Catcher, as Sian requested. You give it to her.)

(Sian takes the Dream Catcher with an expression of condifence. It would seem that she's ready for whatever's to come.)

Sian
Good.
Aleyn, I'm going to give you the appearance of a Midnight Agent for a while.
Even if he does not know it is you... you'd still like to see Iwan before you go, right?

Aleyn
...!
Yes! Of course I do... Thank you, Sian, you're a genius!

> Prompt: Agree with Aleyn

> On-Screen Text: You nod along with Aleyn.

Sian
...There's no need to make a fuss.
You'll need to be careful, though. Only your appearance will change. If you reveal too much about yourself, you may be found out.
And if you are, your influence on the world of the living may be too great.

(Sian glances at you.)

Sian
However, with the Milletian with us, I do not think Iwan will be suspicious.

Aleyn
I- This is so sudden. Wait. I need to gather my thoughts...
The most important thing to say to Iwan...

(Aleyn wipes his tears on his sleeve. For a moment, his bearing is that of a child again. But he pulls himself together quickly.)

(...)

(After a while, Aleyn nods his head once and begins to speak.)

Aleyn
Okay. Samhain will be over soon, so there's no time to lose. I'm ready.

Sian
Let's go.

(Aleyn reaches his hand out to you, silently asking for your support.)

(Sian smiles faintly at the echo of a familiar scene.)

Aleyn
Well? What are you waiting for?

(You all head over to Iwan's house.)

(Aleyn, Iwan, and Sian are all gathered, at last, in the re-built old house. The sound of calm ocean waves surrounds the trio, cutting them off, for a moment, from the rest of the world.)

Iwan
*cough* *cough Well, now. You're back, as promised.

(Iwan looks from you to Sian for a moment, before his gaze falls on Aleyn.)

Iwan
And you brought your friend, eh?

Bleiddian (Aleyn)
(Iwan...)

Sian
Iwan, I can tell you a few things now that I couldn't before. Let me introduce myself at last. My name is Sian.

Iwan
Sian. That name... sounds familiar.

Sian
...
My friend and I are Midnight Agents from the underworld.
We've come here to tell you something.

Iwan
Midnight Agents, hm? Well, I knew you weren't ordinary folks, after all. So, what's so important it bring you all the way here from the underworld?
Is it... *cough* *cough* Is it my time to go?

Bleiddian (Aleyn)
Of course not!

(Aleyn becomes upset. Sian shoots him a cautionary look where Iwan can't see.)

Iwan
Haha. Well, I had to ask. If not that, then what?

Bleiddian (Aleyn)
Well... S-so, um.
(Oh, no. I thought I was ready, but... All the words are gone. What do I do?)

(The silence stretches longer. Iwan starts to look at you strangely. Better stay something...)

> Prompt: Tell him you are here with news about his father.

(When you say the word "father", Iwan looks almost physically pained.)

Iwan
A-about my father?
What about him? What kind of news? Tell me!

Bleiddian (Aleyn)
A-ahem! Let me begin.

(Aleyn clears his throat. He speaks slowly, as if he's picking each word with great care.)

Bleiddian (Aleyn)
Your father, Aleyn...
Your father has been leading an exemplary life in the underworld. Of course, communication with the living is forbidden, but as a reward for his good works, he was given the chance to tell his family in Erinn three things.

Iwan
Is that right? He's really doing so well?

(Aleyn smiles at Iwan's excitement and continues speaking, his voice soft but confident.)

Bleiddian (Aleyn)
That's right. He's doing quite well, though he always tells me how much he longs to see his son.

Iwan
Oh...

Sian
(I was worried, but he's doing better than I thought.)

Bleiddian (Aleyn)
We don't have much time. Are you ready to hear your father's three messages?

Iwan
Yes, I'm ready!

(Aleyn lets out a small, barely, audible sigh. His eyes never leave Iwan's face.)

Bleiddian (Aleyn)
First of all, he says he's doing well, and there's no need to worry about him.
Secondly...
He says his death... wasn't your fault.
He asks you not to blame yourself, and to live your life the best you can. He's looking foraward to hearing about it the next time you see each other.

(Iwan hides his face in his hands, but you can see tears on his cheeks.)

Iwan
*sob* ...Oh... Dad....

Bleiddian (Aleyn)
...
...And the third thing. Well, this one doesn't involve words.

(Aleyn walks towards Iwan and gently pulls his hands down, wrapping him up in a hug.)

Times Remembered - Iwan and Aleyn 01.png
Bleiddian (Aleyn)
He asked me to give you a hug from him.

Iwan
But... I don't deserve... it was my fault...
If I hadn't... left my dad alone that day... ...

(The sound of waves and quiet sobs. Aleyn holds Iwan as he cries, gently rubbing his back. Together like that, they look like...)

Sian
Ah.

Times Remembered - Iwan and Aleyn 02.png
Aleyn
It's okay.
It's okay.
It's okay, Iwan.
...It's okay.

(A father and son, reunited, hold each other slightly enough to cast aside the years that separated them.)

(They stay there, hugging, for a long time. It feels as if time itself has stopped for them.)

Aleyn
(...I love you, Iwan.)

To the Rekindler of Memories, our Guiding Light

I can't thank you enough, dear Milletian. Because of you, I regained my memories, accepted the truth, and best of all, reunited with my son. - Aleyn

(You meet with Aleyn on the top of a hill looking over Port Cobh.)

Aleyn
Hello, (Character Name). It's just me for now. Sian had something to take care of.
...Oh...

> On-Screen Text: You hear the sound of waves crashing against the rocks.

Aleyn
This view always takes my breath away. The sound of the waves, the town's roofs below us...
When I was alive, Iwan and I came here all the time. It was our favorite place.
...

(Aleyn turns away from the view to look at you.)

Aleyn
I'll go back to the underworld now, as promised.
I was confused, and causing all kinds of trouble, and you were there to help me through it. I'll... never forget that. Thank you.
I hope Iwan will be able to let go of his guilt. I'm sure my son will be fine, but a father can't help worrying...
I know it's a lot to ask, after you've done so much, but... If you have the time, please visit Iwan every now and again.

> Prompt: I will.

Aleyn
Thank you, (Character Name). It's been an eventful Samhain, hasn't it? I got my memories back, managed to accept the truth, and reunited with my son. I... couldn't have done it without you.

(Aleyn scratches his head and gives you a rueful smile.)

Aleyn
Haha, is it strange to see me like this? I... feel the same way, honestly.
In any form, I'm happy that we got the chance to meet. But... now I'm just putting off the inevitable. It's time.

(Aleyn slowly crosses the distance between you and gives you a hug.)

Aleyn
I wish you well, whatever comes your way. Goodbye.

> Prompt: Goodbye. or Until next time. or Be well.

(Aleyn's form dissipates.)

> Prompt: So long, (Character Name). Thanks for everything.

(You meet with Sian.)

Sian
Ah, there you are. I had to leave Aleyn for a bit to tend to other matters. No rest for the Midnight Agent, as they say.

(Sian cocks her head at you, blinking slowly.)

Sian
You have done quite well.
Hm.
I must admit something to you. When we first met, I thought to use you in order to restore Aleyn's memories.
But... every time, you chose to help. You cherish this world and all its inhabitants. I'm... ashamed of how I thought.

(Sian slowly extends her hand to you.)

Sian
Would you... shake my hand?

> Prompt: Shake hands with Sian

> On-Screen Text: You cautiously shake hands with Sian, half expecting to find yourself transported somewhere.

Sian
I have learned a great deal from you.
Samhain is almost over. I will be returning to the underworld shortly.
But, before I do... I have one more thing to ask you.

(Sian takes out an old, timeworn book.)

Sian
Please give this to Iwan.
Will this have an impact on the world of the living? I am not sure. I... may be punished for it, but...
It does not matter.
...
That is all I have to say. Do you have any further questions before I leave?

(What do you want to say to Sian before she leaves?)

> Prompt: I hope we meet again. or Who are you really? or Remain Silent

(Sian closes her eyes and shakes her head. Apparently, she has nothing more to say on the matter.)

Sian
I will be going, then. Please give the book to Iwan.

(Sian looks at you for a while longer. For the first time, she seems relaxed.)

Sian
Be well, (Character Name).

(Sian's form dissipates into dust.)

> On-Screen Text: ...I'll see you again someday, (Character Name).

(Heeding Sian's words, you head to Iwan's home once more.)

(A pale man looks at you with forlorn eyes. His wispy gray hair is reminiscent of a dust bunny floating in a sunbeam. His demeanor is as warm as welcoming as a ray of Palala's light. His blue eyes sparkle with newfound vigor.)

Iwan
*cough* *cough* ... You're back. It's good to see you.
Midnight Agents showing up to bring me news from my father...
Truth is, I've carried that guilt around my whole life. Can't just shake it off all at once.
But it feels a little lighter.
I'm gonna keep my promise. I'll keep getting better, little by little. I'll live my life the best I can for the time I have left.
After all... Dad wants to hear about it when we meet again.

(Iwan's face looks the same as ever, but when he smiles now, it reaches his eyes.)

Iwan
*cough* *cough* ...Haha, I've just been talking about myself this whole time. You must've come to visit for a reason, right? What is it?

> Prompt: Hand over the book

(You give the book to Iwan.)

(Iwan takes it from you with a furrowed brow, brushing his fingers over the cover. All at once, he realizes what it is, and his eyes go wide.)

Iwan
Woah! H-how did you get this? Just who are you, really?
Th-this is my father's journal, but... I was sure it was destroyed in the fire...

(Iwan shakes his head ruefully.)

Iwan
Haha, it doesn't matter. There's no way I could understand the ways of the famous Milletian. I'm sure this is all in a day's work to you.
Anyway. Thank you so much.

(Iwan opens the journal gingerly, as if he's afraid a sudden move will make it crumble to ash.)

Iwan
Will you look with me? Haha, this is...

(Iwan shows you the first page of the book. Amid careful handwriting, you see the words "Today, he greeted me for the first time.")

Aleyn
Today, he greeted me for the first time.

Times Remembered - Iwan and Aleyn 03.png
Aleyn
Iwan looked at me with his huge, round eyes and grabbed my finger with his tiny hand. It was like he was trying to shake hands...
I cried. Iwan, my son, whoever you become, it's nice to meet you.
I'm sure the road ahead of us won't be smooth, but I'm also sure it will be beautiful.

Epilogue

(You see Aleyn, standing in a brightly-lit field full of bells and owls. As Aleyn walks towards a light in the distance, the birds fly off. He reaches out into the light, but at the last moment, he turns back and looks at the viewer for a moment.)

(Then, he makes his way in. The sound of a chime is heard.)

Life Goes On

So, what did you think of the events that transpired during this year's Samhain season? Perhaps those simple, everyday encounters that once seemed mundane to your eyes began to take on a newfound luster? - The Singer of Secrets

The Singer of Secrets
So nice to see you, (Character Name.) In truth, the magic powder I sprinkled on you at our first meeting has kept me abreast of everything that has transpired.

(The Singer of Secrets bows with an exaggerated flourish of his hand.)

The Singer of Secrets
You have my deepest thanks for playing a leading role in a story fit to one day be woven into the saga of the Mabinogi.
...Actually, there's something I'd like to ask you.
What did you think of everything you experiences in the Samhain season this year?

> Prompt: (You recall your Samhain adventure...)

(Pondering the Singer of Secrets< question, you mull over all that happened-- the people you met, the places you went, and the revelations that unfolded.)

> Prompt: Consider the new faces you met

(You think about those your adventures led you to meet. The first person who comes to mind is...)

> Prompt: Aleyn, the child beyond his years who discovered his real identity or Sian, who in spite of her seeming indifference was always willing to help or Iwan, who treated you with kindness or The Singer of Secrets, who set you upon the path

(You remember the many other people you crossed paths with on your adventure. The first of them who comes to mind is...)

> Prompt: The four Fomor scamps, * or Brielle and Gillach, who gave you the Sundrop

(Lastly, you recall the place that stands out most clearly in your memories.)

> Prompt: The Reflection of Remembrance where memories, light, and even sound had been lost or The Reflection of Remembrance when the memories had returned, suffused with light or Iwan's house, full of memories

(You calmly close your eyes and think back on these memories, new enough that the ink is still wet upon the parchment of your mind. The sensation of a soft breeze tickles your cheeks.)

> Prompt: ...All things considered, I enjoyed it. or ...It was okay, I guess.

(The Singer of Secrets nods, seeming satisfied with your answer.)

The Singer of Secrets
Haha! Very well, very well.
I do believe I'll stay here until Samhain is over. Those who pass by here have a great wealth of stories to collect.
If I have need of you again, I shall send you another owl.
Ah, one more thing.

> On-Screen text: The Singer of Secrets snaps his fingers and a huge mirror pops into being.

(With a snap of his fingers, a beam of blinding light appears before the Singer of Secrets, which resolves, once you can see again, into a mirror just like Aleyn's. It seems like it will let you enter Aleyn's inner world again.)

The Singer of Secrets
I will keep my foot in this proverbial door for you until I leave.
The owner may have left, but... Who knows? Perhaps you'll find you've forgotten something inside.
And with that, (Character Name)...

(The Singer of Secrets leans in close to whisper in your ear.)

The Singer of Secrets
Take a deep breath. It's time for you to return whence you came.

Daily Quest: But the Memories Remain

The one tied to this Reflection of Remembrance may have departed, but some scattered memories still remain even now. - The Singer of Secrets

(While you're staring at the mirror, the Singer of Secrets interrupts your reverie.)

The Singer of Secrets
Ah! (Character Name). You must be here about the owl I sent. Lovely!
It's true, I do have another favor to ask of you. You're not getting sick of me, are you?

(The Singer of Secrets turns to look at the mirror that leads to the Reflection of Remembrance.)

The Singer of Secrets
The creator of this space may be absent, but something tell me it's not quite empty.
Would you be a dear and collect the stray memories for me?
If we could find something interesting, it would bring me a great deal of joy. Heehee.
Ah, don't worry. You'll be well compensated.

(You enter the mirror once more to collect memories.)

Shadow Mission: Ritardando of Oblivion

(The creator of this space isn't here, but he left memory fragments behind. Collect 10 memory fragments, while avoiding the spinning clock hands.)

(You collect the fragments.)

(MISSION END)

(You obtain A Memory from the area.)

(You carefully give the Singer of Secrets the memory fragment you found in the Reflection of Remembrance.)

The Singer of Secrets
Oho!
This one has a warm patina. The memory inside must be quite touching...
...Thanks to you, I've got a fresh new story to add to my repertoire.
For me, there's no finer treasure. Thanks you. Oh, and here's the reward I promised.
I hope the day finds you in good company. Oh, and do be sure to tell me if you hear any great stories or other news of interest!

Daily Quest: In Search of Taller Tales

If it wouldn't be any trouble, could you go to Annick's pub in Port Cobh and rustle up a few good stories for me? If you hear anything that sparks the imagination, be sure to let me know! - The Singer of Secrets

The Singer of Secrets
I've been thinking about the winding course of your Samhain tale, and in doing so, I realized that the patrons of Port Cobh's tavern sem to have no shortage of colorful anecdotes to share.
If you wouldn't mind, could I ask you to pass some time at Annick's pub?
You know... have a few drinks, roll a few dice, try not to pick fights with sailors... And most importantly, if you happen to overhear any great stories, be sure to come back and tell me, haha!
Ah, don't worry. You'll be well-compensated.

(You head to the pub.)

Annick
Heya. Got a question for me?

> Prompt: Any interesting tales to tell?

Annick
Ah, fishin' for a good story, are you? Well, I hear plenty of those every night-- personal anecdootes, stories of adventure, tall tales... you name it.
In fact, there's a book around here where one of the patrons decided to write down some of the more entertaining stories he's heard in the pub. Might be you wanna give it a look?
Though... what fun is there if I just hand it to you for the asking? Let's spice it up a bit, shall we? Say... a round of Card Seeker. If you can take a round or two off me, I'll let you pore over the book all you like.

All right, let's play us a hand or three of Card Seeker!

Annick
That's the spirit! But I won't go easy on you, so look lively, mate!

(You play Card Seeker, and win a few rounds over Annick. She hands you the book, and you head back to the Dunbarton Library.)

(You hand the book of tall tales you got from Annick's pub to the Singer of Secrets.)

The Singer of Secrets
Oho!

(The Singer of Secrets' fingers dance over the pages as he peruses the stories contained within, smiling with satisfaction.)

The Singer of Secrets
Just as I expected, it's chock-full of rumors and colorful stories from all over the world. Those sailors really know how to embellish a tale!
...Thanks to you, I've got a fresh new story to add to my repertoire.
For me, there's no finer treasure. Oh, and here's the reward I promised.
I hope the day finds you in good company. Oh, and do be sure to tell me if you hear any great stories or other news of interest!

(After completing both quests four times:)

The Singer of Secrets
Ah, there you are, (Character Name). I was just thinking of you.
Hmm...

(The Singer of Secrets pauses, standing still as he looks you over for a moment before continuing.)

The Singer of Secrets
I have a fondness for stories that might otherwise go untold, so I wanted to thank you for not passing by the kinds of smaller tales that others might overlook as trivial.
It's thanks in large part to you that I've been able to gather even more fresh material than I expected. And of course, the story that you yourself became entangled with brought me no small amount of joy.

(The Singer of Secrets bows, gesturing with a sweep of his hand as he does.)

The Singer of Secrets
That's why I think it only fair to give you a little something extra-- a small gift from me, for giving me a tale filled with the spirit of Samhain.
I hope it'll bring a spot of mirth to your daily life. May you fare well, wherever you choose to wander.

Extra: Side Dialogue (Reflection of Remembrance, post-story)

(Upon Interaction with a Bell of Memory:)

(The bell that contains Aleyn's memories is lit up with a brilliant light.)

(One of the Story artworks will show up.)

(When you reach your hand out to touch it, a memory flows into your mind like a faint strain of music on the wind.)

(Upon interaction with one specific bell of Memory, or using the Singer of Secrets's Mysterious note:)

Boy
Dad!

(You see a boy and an older man sitting on a large, fallen trunk below a tall tree. A roaring campfire warms and lights up their surroundings.)

Iwan
Dad! Hey, Dad!

Aleyn
What is it? What's going on?

Iwan
Um! I closed my eyes and counted a hundred sheep like you said, but I still can't sleep!
Can you play that song? You know, the one I like? Please?

Aleyn
You never miss an opportunity to ask for that song, do you? Why don't we take a little break from it?

Iwan
But it's my favorite! I love it more than anything! 'Cause you wrote it for me, Dad!

(The boy's father shakes his head in mock exasperation.)

Aleyn
...You really like it that much, huh? Sure, I'll play it.

Iwan
Yay! Heehee! I can't wait to hear it!

Aleyn
Okay, okay. Hold your horses. Just gotta put more firewood on the fire, first. We wouldn't want you to catch a cold, would we?

Iwan
Dad, can I ask you a question?

Aleyn
What is it?

Iwan
What's the name of that song? You never call it anything!

Aleyn
Ah, that's because I haven't named it yet.
You know what? I wrote it for you, so why don't you give it a name?

Iwan
Really? Me?
Uh...
Hmm... I... Um.... This is hard!

Aleyn
Hahaha. It is, but you don't have to decide right away. Think about it for a little while.
Maybe one day you'll want to name it after someone special.

Iwan
Someone special... hm. Well, it's my favorite song, so it should be named after my favorite person...

(A snowy owl flies near, landing on the edge of the trunk Iwan is sitting on.)

Iwan
Dad, Dad! Look! There's Sian!

Aleyn
Ha, I see! Looks like she's coming to visit. Ever since you saved her from the river, she's been stopping by pretty often.
I think she appreciates you for saving her and giving her a name.

(Sian hops up next to the two, rubs her head on Iwan, and settles in.)

Aleyn
Okay! Now, let's play the song you wanted, shall we?

Iwan
Yeah! You gotta, 'cause Sian wants to hear it too!

Extra: Side Dialogue (The Singer of Secrets)

Pet Dialogue

The Singer of Secrets
Ah, I didn't expect to receive a visit from such a lovable guest!

(The Singer of Secrets gives you a friendly pat on the head.)

The Singer of Secrets
...You know, I once heard a story of a girl and her dog, and how the beloved canine companion took its journey across the rainbow bridge. For some reason, seeing you brought that tale to mind.

(The Singer of Secrets reaches out, covering your eyes with his hand. Your vision goes dark.)

The Singer of Secrets
The girl held the dog in her arms and wept, thinking of how small and helpless he was when they first met.
Years passed and the puppy became a dog, growing old even before its master had reached adulthood. How was it that the time the two shared flowed so differently for each?
...And why did her faithful friend have to take that fateful journey into the next world before her?
In that moment, the dog spoke to its master and friend. Do you know what it told her?
The dog told her to dry her tears, for he was leaving the world with a heart filled with satisfaction.

Times Remembered - Pet Story.png
The Singer of Secrets
It was thanks to her that he was able to romp through the meadows, smelling every flower. It was she who took him to those beautiful beaches every summer, letting him bound into the rolling waves. He dove with relish into the piles of leaves she raked each autumn, and their footprints were ever side by side in the fresh-fallen winter snow. It was because of her that he know a life of happiness.
...
Each of us is given a different allotment of time. None of us ever know how much of it remains to us, but...
While you and your master have time together, I urge you to make memories that warm you like the spring sunshine, cool you liike a patch of summer shade, refresh you like the breezes of autumn, and excite you like the first snow of winter.
Then, when you look back on the time you've spent, I guarantee you this:
You'll cherish the memories you made together, and so will they.

Different character than registered

The Singer of Secrets
It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance! I'm...

(The man stops short of introducing himself, seeming rather more suspicious for it as he pauses to think. Putting a finger to his lips briefly, he gives you a carefully considered greeting.)

The Singer of Secrets
Well... the important thing to know is, I wander the world collecting stories and setting them to music.
Indeed, I have a passion for the musical arts, and for a tale well told.

Extra: Side Dialogue (Iwan)

(One of the following:)

Iwan
*cough* *cough*
Hmm... Might go fishing tomorrow.
*cough* *cough* My knees are hurting... must be a storm coming.
Would you look at the time... Carasek and Karis should be by soon.

(Common text:)

Iwan
(Iwan starts a bit at your presence)
Come in, come in. Can I pour you a cup of chrysanthemum tea?

Pet Dialogue

Iwan
Oh! What a cute little critter you are! It's been a while since I've had an animal visitor...
You remind me a bit of an animal I befriended once, as a boy...
It was a rainy year, and the river flooded. Her leg got trapped between the rocks...
Well, it's a long story, but my father and I rescued her. She visited us a few times after that.
I named her something... what was it? Ah, I don't remember. It was so long ago.
It's been so long... there's no way she's still around, but I still find myself wondering how she's doing, or hoping to see her again.
Little one, don't take your relationships for granted. Cherish the time you have together.
Take it from an old man with a lifetime of regrets.
*cough* *cough* It's chilly. Come sit by the stove for a while.
