Is this template really helpful? | 27 | 15:43, 25 July 2012 |
Is it really necessary to use this template? Because I find it much harder to use than just a plain page with text and I don't see a need to emulate the game's interface.
But what are the merits of emulating the in-game interface verses just presenting the text of the book in a format that is more accessible to the readers?
Some people find it easier to read this, some people find it easier to read raw text, it's just preference. That's why we provide both instead of replacing one or the other.
It takes a very long time to get the text to format properly in this template. It took me about 40 minutes just to do Your Pet. It's not worth my time, and I don't want to see other people spending their time on this, either.
It's not an issue of utility, because at the minute, it has none. It's a matter of aesthetics. I don't think we should value this on how hard it is to code (because it is...), but on how it contributes to a reader.
The job of the wiki is to convey information in an easily accessible format. While ascetics can be important as it improves readability, they should not get in the way of readability and ease of use. This template doesn't appear to improve readability or ease of use, to the contrary, it gets in the way of ease of use and requires far more effort on the part of the reader to access the information.
How so? I don't see what extra effort there is besides pressing show if you'd rather see the raw text. (Just to be clear, I don't favor this style, I just don't see the logic in wasting or removing something that is otherwise causing no trouble.)
No, you have to click on every page in the "book" minus the first page. So if it is a 15 page book, that is 14 clicks to read it.
The problem with that is? It's better than nothing and it's like how it is within the game. However, if you have suggestions for updating the template please say so.
So much clicking for so little text per click impedes readability of the whole text. It is far more work than necessary, both in reading the book and in formating the information to fit the template. Emulating how the game behaves isn't a good thing to begin with, especially when the game's behavior isn't very good to begin with. I say just get rid of the template altogether because it isn't useful nor does it improve how the information is presented.
did a test book on one of the in-game books. geez it is annoying. gotta put like "p2p2" for a section and it took forever to figure out how to get a picture to show up...not worth my time. e-e...I think farix is right about the whole readability of an article thing. it's just better and it is far more work than necessary.
It has already been established that others prefer this template over raw text and it is pointless to remove something that is still being used. Deleting something, in my opinion, should be the VERY last resort in everything.
"Pic or it didn't happen!" Besides, it is not about preferences, but about readability. The template interferes with the readability of the article.
Perhaps we should put the books in a Hide/Show tag? (And no, pic or it didn't happen doesn't apply to statements, at most quotes do.)
So are we going to keep using these templates or not? I'd like to know whether I should begin working with them. If not, I'm not even going to bother if my work will just eventually be cleared.
Also, I personally prefer this template over the plain text. I find the whole concept of mimicking formatting and imagery from the game pointless and I don't really like it, but just with the books I prefer reading the segmented pages rather than reading a whole block of text. It's easier.
Also, concerning removing something just because it's useless since it only provides convenience or is an option of preference, I'd like to point out that the plain text on the book's wiki page is absolutely useless because there are already plain text book pages in Nexon's official in-game book library, albeit with a horrid hot pink background. Why not just clear the wiki page's text if there's already a plain text version elsewhere that we can link to and read? Because it's more convenient to read on the wiki page than with a hot pink background burning itself into your retina, right?
