A bit of confusion

A bit of confusion

When it says you can do a Gem Upgrade at 0~0, does that mean on a non-upgraded item or does it mean as the first Gem Upgrade after the weapon/shield is fully upgraded? If it is before it's upgraded, this won't take up any upgrade slots, right? Also, can you perform the same Gem Upgrade twice for a Shield? This information would also be good to include on this page.

Gem upgrades have their own section, therefore creating a new starting point on upgrades. In other words, first gem upgrade after item is fully upgraded.

Also, many shields have the ability to receive a 2nd gem upgrade, but the same upgrade cannot be done twice. It is a different upgrade.

So would this be a valid upgrade path for a Shield of Avon?

  1. Surface Enhancement
  2. Avon Shield Special Upgrade 1, 2, or 3
  3. Artisan Upgrade
  4. Defensive Gem Upgrade
  5. Shield of Avon Gem Upgrade

This is probably the only Shield of Avon I'll ever work on so I want to get it right. Also, if the last upgrade was an artisan, and you gem upgrade then undo the artisan upgrade, will that undo the gem upgrade(s)? (Same goes for Special Upgrades for weapons.) If you had only one, and it doesn't disappear, will you not be able to put a second gem upgrade until you put another last upgrade on?

Yes, that is a valid upgrade path. If you gem upgrade after an artisan, you are ineligible to use a artisan removal kit, as the last upgrade would have no longer been the Artisan Upgrade.
