Home Ownership and You

In recent years, there's been an increase in people interested in owning their own homes. In times past, folks were pleased enough if they had a tidy space somewhere in Erinn where they could relax in solitude. It sets one to wondering: what changed between then and now?

There's a certain pastoral romance in the image of adventurers laying in a field near their warm campfire, staring up at the night sky, but in truth, most people want a safe, cozy place to call their own, where they can be with those close to them.

If that sounds like you, you're in luck! In this book, we'll go over everything you need to know to find a place you can call home.

The Benefits of a Home

If you're pondering whether home ownership is right for you, you'd do well to keep in mind the not-insignificant benefits of having a home.

A Place to Lay Your Head

Having a place you can return to after your many sojourns is important, but the satisfaction of having one's own home has its roots in more primal desires. It represents a restful personal space where one can be free from outside disturbances.

Within a house, you're afforded the luxury of freedom from roving monsters or unwelcome guests. A home is also an invitation to self-expression, with your ability to both change the layout of the interior and arrange any and all furnishings to suit your tastes and preferences.

The inside of a house enjoys a consistent level of light and warmth regardless of changes in the temperature outdoors, keeping residents comfortable no matter what the weather outdoors may be.

Nothing truly guarantees a life of comfort, but a home goes a long way toward making it possible.

A Place to Socialize

A well-built, well-maintained home can blossom into a social hot spot. Beyond partying with your close friends, you can casually chat as you kick back and relax, or even host an impromptu exhibition to showcase some of your favorite items from your collection. I'm sure each reader can readily imagine other exciting possibilities in line with their friends and interests, for every home can be a reflection of its owner!

We can safely say there is more to a home than simply serving as a place to cook, relax, and sleep. A home serves as a base from which we can connect with others and in turn allow them to connect with us.

Psychological Satisfaction

When one hears the word 'home', settlement and security are perhaps two of the first associated concepts to spring to mind. The pride of home ownership instills any owner with a considerable measure of confidence - a natural result of all the benefits we've covered here.

High satisfaction as a result of owning a house is only natural. Homeowners can escape the life of a perpetual vagabond, enjoy private rest and relaxation, and invite friends and compatriots to share in the good times. Beyond that, a house provides a platform for future economic growth and confers a level of respectable social status as well. It's an investment few would regret making.

Obtaining a Home

How, then, does one go about obtaining their own house? What efforts do others put in to ensure they get the home of their dreams?

Making Your Own Homestead

The first step to owning your own home is setting up your own homestead.

Here in Erinn, we parcel out tracts of land to all willing adventurers, who can build a homestead in any region just by accepting the offer.

Expanding a House

Once you've set up your homestead, you can start right in on building a house. You'll have a tent to start with - enough to shield you from the elements - but if you want a nice, sturdy structure, you'll have some work to do first.

In order to upgrade to a proper house, you'll need to expand your homestead to a greater size than the initial plot of land you were given. Fortunately, working on your homestead should bring results: harvest the crops you plant or decorate the homestead to raise its level and expand its boundaries.

If you expand the size of your your homestead twice, you'll have a big enough plot of land to upgrade to a house.

Leasing a House

Hold on, homeowner! While you're surely eager to move in and choose the perfect place for your furniture, you'll first have to pay 500,000 Gold to lease your house. The lease grants you full use of the house for 30 days from the date of your payment, and can be extended with a payment of 200,000 Gold any time within the 7 days before the lease expires.

If you allow the lease to lapse, however, you'll have to pay the initial leasing fee of 500,000 gold if you wish to lease the house again.

Maintaining a Home

So you've done it, have you? You finally have a house to call your own! Pour the wine and light the fireworks! Now...how do you go about turning a house into a home?

Decorating the Interior

It's your house, and you can decorate it in any style that strikes your fancy. With a little Gold, you'll be able to place furniture in any location and orientation your heart desires, then change it up whenever you like. If you're looking to go deeper, you'll be pleased to know that you can change the walls and the floors to your choice of style...if you have the Gold, of course. No one ever claimed home ownership was for the faint-of-coinpurse.

Sending Out Invitations

In the mood for a party? Just want to have your friends over? If you're socially inclined, invitations will help you get the word out. You can send your Brownie out to invite your friends and acquaintances by having it issue them an invitation.

We've covered the ins and outs of obtaining and maintaining one's very own house, but it falls to you, dear reader, to put this knowledge into practice. It is my hope that this book will aid any Milletian looking to make the house of their dreams.
