Ego?

Why are Spirit Weapons called Egos? Is that some sort of fan-name or something?

Infodude57512:11, 17 September 2011

Duncan referred to Eiry, a Spirit Weapon, as an Ego Weapon at some point. It might have been when returning her to him. So, it built up as the fanonical name for a Spirit Weapon.

Ah, I see.

Infodude57512:41, 17 September 2011

Plus, a spirit is an ego, so it makes sense to call it as such.

Kingman18617:47, 19 September 2011

I looked into the game's files, it says "Ego" in place of "Spirit" for the incarnations.

Btw, what's the definition of Ego?

Infodude57518:03, 19 September 2011

umm i think it means like you know that you exist? how you define yourself?

my guess it that spirited weapon have their own personality and stuff so maybe that's why we call them ego weapon.

Well that's just plainly weird...

e·go Noun /ˈēgō/

  1. A person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance: "a boost to my ego".
  2. The part of the mind that mediates between the conscious and the unconscious and is responsible for reality testing and a sense of personal identity

In Korea, there are English Words for skills, such as Flame Burst is known as Flame Burst and Shock is known as Spark in Korea. In this case, "Ego Weapon" was the English Word used for their "Spirit Weapon". Does that explain why people use the term "ego"?

Miyuna18:52, 19 September 2011

Perhaps...

But I don't hear people referring Flame Burst as Flame Burst, Stonehendge as Shadow Gate, etc.

Infodude57519:11, 19 September 2011

I for one, still refer to Charge as Assault. But I do often hear these names being used, especially Spark. (Although not Shadow Gate.) But anyways, Ego is not the NA canonical term, but it is fanonically accepted version. Try to refrain from using the term on the wiki.

Ego was a mistranslation of the word Spirit. Like how Calla was the mistranslation of the word Color.

Since Ego is shorter and easier to use. It has stuck.

Aubog00705:57, 20 September 2011

Wait, Calla=Color?

Pyro - (Talk)12:09, 20 September 2011

in KR version, item have both english and korean name.

it used to be written as "ego short sword" for Eiry.

T^T why did they kill Eiry? T^T

Fallenonesigniture.PNG13:35, 20 September 2011

Look at the old template for the Color enchant.

Believe it was Calla or Kalla. Just mistranslations.

Aubog00715:40, 20 September 2011

Doesn't help that even Nexon Staff calls them "egos"...: http://forum.nexon.net/Mabinogi/forums/thread/8379300.aspx Sabina uses the term "Ego weapons" instead of "Spirit Weapons", not just her, but many other Nexon Staff has called it ego now and then, interchangeably with Spirit Weapon. So I guess even Nexon NA accepts the term egos.

Miyuna18:43, 24 September 2011

Bandwagon effect. Short hand term always wins.

In the beginning of the spirit weapon update. It was called spirit weapons exclusively. No reference to egos at all during that patch.

Aubog00720:06, 24 September 2011

The only mention of ego during the game was when Duncan was talking about Eiry and referred to her as an ego weapon.

Miyuna08:28, 26 September 2011

And i would really discount that as being "official" nexon. Due to the simple fact that in G2. Siren was called Seiren.

So lulz. They had a bare bones team back then full of koreans for NA.

Aubog00709:06, 26 September 2011

...

But really, C1's translators were terrible...

Pyro - (Talk)10:42, 26 September 2011

Also Esras being a male and not a female.

That was funny.

Aubog00711:47, 26 September 2011

Actually you can't blame them for that. Nexon Korea purposefully made her female instead of male. And the translators were thinking of the mythical Esras, who was male.

Pyro - (Talk)12:08, 26 September 2011

Well i was saying it was funny. I am sure they had their reasons. Just bad localization on their part.
