Hagi is first seen in Tir Chonaill chastising Anju for her failure in gathering eggs and messing up her ninja skills by accidentally leaving a note of her intentions. Hagi is then cautious of the Milletian who arrives to deliver Anju eggs, and considers them to not be an enemy as enemies don't give gifts. Hagi then offers the Milletian to join the duo and then proceeds to teach Anju and the Milletian various ninja skills; sealed ninja scrolls are used during the training, but Hagi refuses to tell the Milletian their true purpose, even warning Anju not to reveal anything.
Anju later mentions that she was initially bullied until saved by Hagi who was transformed into a bear. Anju thanks Hagi but he scoffs, nervously saying that he was merely trying to perfect his ninja technique. Anju then reluctantly agrees to be mentored by Hagi and receives a paper shuriken from him as a symbol of their team.
Hagi later tasks Anju and the Milletian to find a ninja scroll hidden in Alby Dungeon. On retrieval, Shinobi appears behind Hagi, resulting Anju pushing Hagi out of the way and receiving the fall. The Shinobi demands Hagi return the ninja scrolls he stole from him, stating that he can't handle the power inside, but Hagi flees, abandoning the Milletian and Anju. The Shinobi then tells the Milletian to tell Hagi to return the scrolls if he ever wants to see Anju again, then vanishes with his captive, leaving a Paper Shuriken.
The Milletian then searches for Hagi all around Tir Chonaill. He poorly impersonates Meven, then Malcolm, and finally Ferghus. After giving up, Hagi admits that he is no ninja expert as he did steal the scrolls from the Shinobi, but claims to be in an act of self defense, stating that the Shinobi terrorized Hagi's hometown. Hagi believes that Anju hates him for abandoning her, but until he receives the paper shuriken from the Milletian, he realizes that she followed him until the end and begs the Milletian to save her.
After one final training session, the Milletian returns to Alby Dungeon to fight the Shinobi, who then threatens to kill Anju after being pushed to the edge. Hagi arrives and says that he discarded the scrolls, then offers to take Anju's place. The Shinobi then attacks Hagi, who says he actually used the scrolls and turns into a log. The off-guard Shinobi is then attacked from behind, who then disappears in a puff of smoke. Anju praises Hagi's ability, and the group leaves the dungeon.
Upon returning to Tir Chonaill, Hagi tells his comrades to train even more. There is then one final matter the Milletian considers: who to return the paper shuriken to?
