Description
Ruairi was one of The Three Lost Warriors, along with Mari and Tarlach. He was a warrior that was exceptionally skilled with melee combat.
History
Ruairi is the son of one of the Lords of Emain Macha and has a brother named Rian. Sometime after his father received the Lord title, Ruairi found that his father began to stop acknowledging him. Ruairi soon happened to eavesdrop on a conversation between his father and Esras, where he discovered that his younger brother was selected as the heir apparent instead of him. From this conversation, Ruairi gathered that everyone would suffer should he become the next Lord of Emain Macha due to a "contract" that was made.
At some point he enrolled in the Paladin Training Courses, where he happened to be in the same class with Aodhan. However, Ruairi dropped out after discovering that it was not to his liking. Eventually, he left Emain Macha to travel, leaving his brother in the care of Esras. Prior to his departure, he made a vow to his brother that he would return and help Rian if something ever happened to him.
Ruairi's father turned out to be a very cruel man; he tried killing Mores and his family to obtain the fame he achieved after the Second Fomor War and "signed" a contract with Cromm Cruaich to sacrifice Ruairi to gain more power. Ruairi, however, was only vaguely aware of this.
Most of his history was explained in Generation 1: Advent of the Goddess; he went to Alby Dungeon with Tarlach and Mari. After defeating the Giant Spider, Ruairi mentions about seeing the Goddess Morrighan pleading for him to come to Tir Na Nog. The trio then agrees to head to the destination and aid the Deity.
In the depths of Tir Na Nog's Albey Dungeon, the trio encounter the Dark Lord, who taunts and curses them before disappearing. In the next room, they find the body of Glas Ghaibhleann. Shockingly, Tarlach's old master, Mores, appears and orders his fellow Ghost Armors and the Dark Lord to seize the trio. After Mari is mentioned, Mores hesitates, however, Morrighan, which is actually Cichol in disguise, soon appears and commands the soldiers to continue their onslaught; Ruairi began to doubt Morrighan and was put into a coma for four years.
Mainstream Story
Approximately four years later, Ruairi awakens from his coma in Math Dungeon, under the care of Triona, while believing that his comrades Mari and Tarlach are dead and Morrighan can no longer be trusted. During this time, Triona tries to tend to Ruairi, although he refuses her because she is a "Fomor." Eventually, Morgant the Dark Lord appears, who informs Ruairi that he found him "interesting" for defending Mari and gave up becoming a Lord of Emain Macha by giving it to his brother Rian. He then informs Ruairi that humans are nothing but selfish beings who destroy one another and bring themselves down, claiming that Esras murdered Ruairi's and Rian's father and has all of Emain Macha under her hand, even Rian as her puppet. Ruairi refuses to believe this, but Morgant decides to leave and warns Ruairi that he must not leave or Humans will hunt him. Ruairi remembers promising to help Rian whenever he was in trouble and sincerely ignores Morgant's warning, abandoning Triona.
Meanwhile, Paladin Trainees are given an order by Esras that "Doppelgangers" (Ruairi and Triona) exist in Math Dungeon and is ordered to hunt them. The group overwhelms Triona, but Ruairi, who returned after hearing Triona's pleas, defeats the Paladin Trainees. Soon, Rian and Esras show up, and not acknowledging Ruairi's identity, commands more Paladin Trainees to attack, but are no match for Ruairi's strength. Esras threatens to kill Triona right before his eyes, causing Ruairi to stand down. Esras then mocks him, knocks out Triona, and demands more Paladin Trainees to surround him. Morgant soon shows up and defeats the Trainees and scolds Ruairi for ignoring his order, telling him that this is what "human justice" is all about, and disappears with him and Triona into the darkness.
Later, Morgant reminds Ruairi of how he previously wanted to be a Paladin and continues on of how human's sense of "justice and righteousness" is nothing but irresponsible standards set by themselves. He also tells him that the Dark Knights exist to stop human's arrogance and tyranny, and also says that he is "a human, just like [Ruairi]", who desires to "destroy every irrational ideas and wants everything to reset and start from scratch, fair and square".
Concluding the battle with Tabhartas and Morgant revealing Rian inside the golem's body, Ruairi shows up and demands the one who killed his brother. Esras claims the "True" Paladin, the Milletian, as the murderer. Ruairi, after witnessing Tabhartas's rubble and Rian's body explode, swears at Morrighan and vows vengeance and leaves with Morgant who promises him that goal.
Ruairi, who now had "given up everything" according to Morgant in Generation 1, accepts his fate as a Black Knight and wields Pragarah, serving under Cichol and leading the Ghost Armors to create onslaught in all of Erinn. Upon accepting Pragarah, he learns Morgant was actually the Knight of Light, Lugh, however Morgant tells Ruairi not to call him that again.
Throughout all of Uladh, Ruairi and his evil comrades venture through every single dungeon, destroying the Goddess Statues. This act was undone when Lymilark's Priests banded together and repaired the statues.
In Alby Dungeon, he encounters the true Paladin, the Milletian, and instantly defeats them, though they do not fight back against him. Cichol intervenes, claiming that his minion should not waste his power on a useless being, but then realizes that the "being" is the one who constantly meddled with his plans. Price intervenes as well, running away with the Milletian. Ruairi tries to go after him but Cichol stops him, saying that there is no need to, and the God leaves. Ruairi then talks to Morgant about Triona's "condition," but assures him that everything will be all right.
Sometime later, Ruairi discusses with Triona about her fate as Macha, Goddess of Destruction and Chaos. Ruairi tries to talk her out of it but she declines, saying that she wants to because she loves him.
In Baol Dungeon, he encounters the Milletian yet again and overwhelms them, insulting that they need allies to carry on "justice." However, Tarlach and Nao show up, and Ruairi recognizes them both and acknowledges that Nao is Mari. Tarlach explains to him that Cichol is truly evil, and was just using him in order to fulfill his demands, and begs his friend to come back. Ruairi declines, saying that he had "gone too far." However, after he sees Triona tied to Lia Fail, he immediately rebels and attacks Cichol, telling his friends to leave the place and promises to return to them, but is defeated by the God. Morrighan soon shows up, telling all of Cichol's plans had failed, but this was not the case; he tells her how Ruairi was apparently bonded to Cromm Cruaich and was able to summon it by using Ruairi to do so.
After the defeat of the stone Cromm Cruaich, the real Cromm Cruaich comes because he sensed a 'copy' and he tried to hurry to the place he sensed it. After arriving, he informs the Milletian everything about the contract. However, he did not expect that his offering was accepted early, but he decided to take Ruairi anyway, in order to shorten the binder's suffering.
Note: For the character's combat information and stats, see Ruairi (Monster).
During the Dark Knight Quest, a Black Wizard aids the Milletian into becoming a Dark Knight. At first, the Milletian is hesitant. The Black Wizard then states that the Milletian should "experience" the path of a Dark Knight first.
After placing a Dark Knight Amulet given by the Black Wizard on Barri Dungeon, the Milletian role-plays as Ruairi, a Black Knight who was undertaking a trial to be entrusted as a Dark Knight Leader.
A vision of Cromm Cruaich appears in the Milletian's mind; he is preparing a ceremony to revive the Golden Dragon, Adniel, by offering Ruairi as a "Conductor."
After a battle with the Red Dragon, Crumena, Cromm Cruaich is blazed and killed as he slides into a volcano, and Ruairi is knocked out nearby. After finding him, he informs the Milletian that they are the true conductor; Ruairi's purpose was only to bring them to Iria.
In the finale, Ruairi appears with Legatus and witnesses Adniel's reawakening.
Shortly after reviving Adniel, Ruairi boards a ferry in Port Qilla to the unknown.
Ruairi is mentioned during the recap of The Three Lost Warriors as "The Warrior, whose destiny he chose to reject." His parents offered him to a dragon before being even born. It is then said that he lost his brother and was betrayed by a trusted friend. Seeing what has become of humanity, he sided with the Fomors as a Dark Knight. He later left the future in the hands of people from a distant star and simply vanished for an unknown amount of time, only to return now.
As shown in Episode 4, Ruairi is briefly shown seeing Tarlach at Sidhe Sneachta. This is further expanded in Episode 8, where the two eventually reunite and Ruairi explains that he was stationed at Iria and later traveled to another continent (possibly Belvast Island). After catching up, Ruairi leaves to search for Triona, but promises to help Tarlach with his research by giving him relics in Iria. However, Ruairi is unsuccessful in many attempts. He eventually finds her grave and is distraught by her death. Ruairi then searches for Lugh, but also discovers that he went insane and was later killed by Shakespeare; this caused Ruairi to fall into greater despair, having lost all links to Triona.
As shown in Episode 9, Ruairi returned to Tarlach to ask him for answers on Triona's death. Tarlach suggests the Golden Apples, the source of life supposedly tied to Lia Fail also tied to the mythical Tree of Life that connects to various realms. Ruairi then decides to join Tarlach, as his plan may involve acquiring a Golden Apple. Ruairi heads to Iria Falls to see the maker of the charms, Gael, and requests her to come along to see Tarlach. However, she senses his emotions bottled up from his history; the other shamans also sense his inner darkness and try to get him to come along quietly. As shown in Episode 6, an aged Ruairi massacred many shamans of Courcle to capture a specific person who can make a charm. The shamans refused, as they already gave him a charm and saw his evil intentions, but their efforts to defend the shaman Ruairi requested was in vain as he killed them off one by one.
Ruairi walks with a white Unknown Man while lamenting the death of a certain someone.
Later, during the fight between Akule and Bhafel, an aged Ruairi looks over them.
Ruairi mysteriously disappears from Millia's side.
Ruairi reveals to be the Black Dragon Knight and explains that he has been fighting off Morrighan's curse that Morgant placed on him back in Generation 1. Despite supposedly coming to even terms in Generation 8, he blames the Milletian for the curse and attacks them, eventually defeating and killing them after three scuffles. As he turns around to leave and removes his armor, the Milletian's charm suddenly explodes.
Ruairi mysteriously warps to the Connous Oasis where he is tended to by Millia, mistaking her for Triona. As Ruairi recovers, he asks her what she considers a hero, but she states that heroes do not exist; her father was killed and no one came to help him and thus desires revenge, but considers Ruairi to be her hero for saving her back in the Mysterious Karu Forest Ruins. Ruairi sympathizes, having lost Triona long ago, and agrees to be the sword of her revenge.
Millia then sends a note to the Milletian requesting for shaman aid. As the shamans arrive and attempt to revitalize Ruairi, they sense a familiar presence from him. Ruairi then awakes, gets up, dons his Black Dragon Knight armor, and accuses Millia for attempting to hand her over to the shamans. He then tries to attack one of the shamans, but Millia takes the hit. Black Mask, revealed to be Tarlach, arrives, concerned over the loss of Ruairi. Tarlach reveals he discovered the medium to a goddess' manifestation: Millia. Tarlach then notes that Ruairi cut down Millia, but Ruairi coldly states that he no longer cares for her because she "betrayed" him and that she will make a perfect offering.
In the drama commentary, Ruairi explains that he made his decision to destroy the Gods and sought power, thus finding the Soul Stream and had inherited Milletian traits such as rapid aging, which explains his older-looking appearance despite being a Tuatha de Danann; he has thought about shaving his beard but it would be pointless since it would merely grow back. Ruairi is asked about shaving his beard in the future, but does not provide a comment.
Ruairi is stationed at Renes, the base of operations of the Cessair organization. He senses Shamala's presence, who is transformed into a Dungeon Rat, forcing her to flee.
After Shamala escapes, Ruairi tells the Cessair to let her go.
Later, Ruairi and Tarlach confront Adniel, noting their evil intentions, and warns them that they do not want to destroy the world. Tarlach dismisses it, claiming that he is saving it, and Ruairi binds the Gold Dragon, who notes that this is just like the beginning.
Ruairi and Tarlach then proceed on with their plans. Tarlach warns his friend that making the spirit journey to connect to Triona is a dangerous path, but Ruairi refuses to back down and threatens he will resign from the plan if Tarlach refuses. Nao then briefly appears and warns them that they will never have the answers they seek. Ruairi refuses to give up, but Tarlach states that the result will never change.
He then attempts to intercept the Milletian who is trying to save Millia tied to Lia Fail. He defeats them again, but Shamala revitalizes them; Ruairi notes that as the exact same technique the shamans tried to use on him earlier. As Akule rushes in and urges the Milletian to destroy Lia Fail, Ruairi flashes back to his promise of being Millia's sword of vengeance, and tries to intercept them again. Akule then throws a charm at Ruairi and commands it to explode, but as Ruairi braces himself, Akule states it was a fluke, allowing the Milletian to damage Lia Fail.
The Milletian's attack causes Lia Fail to become unstable. Ruairi tries to use his power to fix it, but Tarlach later tells the Milletian to destroy Lia Fail. However, a mysterious barrier is suddenly erected around Lia Fail, preventing anyone from reaching it, and Macha appears and attacks.
An injured Ruairi requests Shamala for healing. She kisses him and Ruairi gets back on his feet. He quickly cracks the barrier using the dark energies of his sword and leaps to Millia as an attempt to save her. However, Macha uses her magic to push him off the ledge and into the lava, causing Shamala to jump in to save him.
After the battle, Ruairi loses his left arm, but the Cessair make him a prosthetic arm. Shortly afterward, the Cessair and Cessair's Heart bow before him.
Ruairi is summoned to meet with Dian. A Cessair intercepting him tells him that she "discovered its whereabouts."
Later, Ruairi appears in Port Cobh and sits down next to the Young Tarlach, who fails to recognize him. Ruairi simply asks the child if he's been all right, leaving him a bit confused, and then suddenly feels his heart breaking up. Ruairi tells Tarlach to stay well before leaving.
Ruairi talks to Dian, who is afraid they are making the wrong choices for Young Tarlach. She tells him to not follow his emotions as they will only bring himself down, explaining that she abandoned them to do the "right thing," even if it means becoming a monster. Reminding him that his greed cost him everything, she warns him not to let his weakness drive him again. Ruairi simply says he pities her before leaving to continue their plan.
Ruairi then talks to Tarlach. Lamenting the past and trying to believe that he did not make the wrong choice, Ruairi says once it is all over Tarlach can forget what had happened and he will live a happy life. However, Tarlach responds that Nemeton is full of lies and destiny is theirs to manipulate.
Ruairi then approaches the Milletian and Merlin, who were captured by the Cessair. He says he wants Tarlach to live a normal life, but needs the God Fragment within him to complete their plan first, performing a ritual to extract the fragment. Ruairi denies their interferences and promises to return Tarlach once the ritual is complete. He then gives them a crystal from Tarlach's possession before leaving.
His hardened body is covered in a latticework of scars. Though the wounds themselves have long healed, the pain they carry is visible in his eyes.
Young Tarlach explains to Ruairi that Dian's plan was full of lies as she was planning to sacrifice the two to become Dian Cecht again; Tarlach suggests they use Dian's plan to fulfill their own purposes. Ruairi assumes that Tarlach is trying to using the power of the Gods to sever the link between Erinn and the ties it has to the Gods again, but Tarlach states his plan is the exact opposite: he is trying to open the door to the other cities of gods so that an outside entity would invade Erinn and combat its Gods, thus preventing them from meddling with the world and its inhabitants. Tarlach plans to sacrifice himself to achieve his plot, believing that his second life means nothing, but Ruairi notices that Tarlach is trembling as he does not seem truly capable of sacrificing himself, and asks who he truly is.
Tarlach explains that he is Tarlach, but not the Tarlach that Ruairi knows; he is the God Fragment that absorbed Tarlach's memories and was made this way by Macha. He asks Ruairi to carry out the ritual for Tarlach, saying that the Tarlach he knew would want him to do it and that Dian was incapable of besting the Milletian, but leaves the choice to Ruairi. Tarlach explains that he will die afterward, knowing that his life is forfeit due to being the key to open the gate. He then bids Ruairi farewell before being encased in a crystal. Ruairi laments over his constant sacrifice of his beloved before being interrupted by Cessair's Heart, who notes that she lied and used Ruairi. She then tells Ruairi that Tarlach did not tell him everything, explaining that him being the key to opening the door to another world did not choose his fate, rather it decided his fate. She also explains that his death does not have to last forever.
Ruairi then conducts an altered ritual before being briefly interrupted by the Milletian, Merlin, and Treasure Hunter. Ignoring their pleas of stopping, Ruairi blocks Merlin's attack and calls Cessair's Heart to intercept them. Her stalling allows Ruairi to summon a barrier that the group cannot penetrate. However, Treasure Hunter disables the barrier, prompting Ruairi to use his magic to mutate and empower the Cessair to allow the barrier to regenerate. This again proves futile when Merlin teleports the Milletian into the altar before the barrier regenerates and the altar flies into the sky.
Ruairi explains his motives to the Milletian of opening the door to another world but refuses to explain why, saying what will happen when the door is open is more important. Tired of sacrificing his friends for those he does not know, Ruairi makes the decision to protect those he cares about. In the final battle against the Milletian, Ruairi sacrifices his humanity to become a monster, but is still pushed back by the Milletian. The ritual continues as they fight, and once it is complete and Tarlach's body transforms into the door to another world, Ruairi destroys the altar and sends the two plummeting down to Erinn, where the Milletian is saved by Merlin. Ruairi remembers that Heart told him the only way to save Tarlach is to die in his stead; by destroying the altar the moment the ritual finishes and the door to another world opens, the sacrifice would shift to him. Heart asks him if he really wants to go down that path, but after remembering everything that happened in his life, Ruairi believes that it was the only choice he had before being engulfed in a bright light that is seen all across Erinn.
By Ruairi's sacrifice, Tarlach, now a regular boy, is teleported next to the Milletian, Merlin, and Treasure Hunter. However, this sacrifice only hastened Erinn's demise, as an unknown god from beyond the door begins wreaking havoc on Erinn.
A Ruairi briefly appears to the milletian alongside Tarlach in the Cave of Remorse, embodying parts of their delusions and grief. Whether the words said by him there are true to his actual thoughts is unknown.
There is a chance that a Revived Ruairi appears to the Milletian while they are stuck in the crystal traps of Avalon.
You catch a glimpse of short red hair. A part of the man's body gleams differently from the rest of his flesh. You don't know why, but you feel an old... familiarity and bitter sorrow.

Trivia
- His name, Ruairi, is equivalent to the Irish Ruairí meaning “red-haired king”.[1]
- The anglicized form of his name is Rory.
- The Trade Assistant Imp mentions Ruairi in one of its dialogues, having heard how Ruairi was doing.
- Ruairi in Generation 1 and the Cursed Labyrinth was 19 years old. In the Dark Knight Quest, he was 23. Before the start of The Saga: Iria (Stab the Shamans to Death!), he was 28. His age during The Saga: Iria is unknown, although his age during The Saga: Iria II (The Mind of Tarlach and The Untold Story) is 39.
- During the Dark Knight quest of Ruairi's RP, he is shown as wearing Muffler Robe, but in the cutscene model he wears a different robe. This robe is similar look of Muffler Robe with no name but simple called as "??? Robe" in the game code. Later on, Shakespeare wore this robe In Generation 16.
- MabiNovel shows an alternative portrait of Ruairi without his cape in The Saga: Iria. However, comparing the two portraits shows that the head part was moved.
- It is implied in Generation 1 that Ruairi's soul is inside of the Glas Ghaibhleann summoned by Mores.
- This likely explains why Ruairi wakes up in Generation 2 from a coma, having been released during the defeat of Glas Ghaibhleann.
- Strangely, despite lacking the necessary means, Ruairi sees Nao at the end of Generation 3.
- The age difference between Generation 1 and the Dark Knight Quest suggests that the incident in Tir Na Nog and the length of his coma lasted approximately four years.
- In Generation 3 Baol Dungeon final, Ruairi's standing pose is same as the Paladin's, hinting that the boss version of Ruairi is based on the Paladin's model.
- Ruairi's Dark Armor set is shown to be an incompleted model. Because the Korean developers had to finish making the Generation 3 in a half year to proceed a 1st aniversary in Korean server together. This explains why Pragarah's model was simply used as Claymore instead of Morgant's sword.
- During the G1 RP Quest The Three Missing Warriors Ruairi had Rank F Windmill, Rank E Campfire, Rank D Rest, Rank C Counterattack, Rank 9 Critical Hit, Defense, Smash, and Rank 6 Combat Mastery.
- During the G3 RP Quest Dark Knight Quest Ruairi had the same skills as The Three Missing Warriors, as well as Rank F Control of Darkness, Rank E Mind of Chaos, Rank C Hands of Chaos, Rank A Body of Chaos, Rank 9 Dark Heavy Stander, Dark Natural Shield, Dark Mana Deflector, and Rank 6 Soul of Chaos.
- During the G17 RP Quest Stab the Shamans to Death! Ruairi instead had Rank Novice Critical Hit, Rank 7 Rest, and Rank 1 Defense, Smash, Combat Mastery, Counterattack, Windmill, Evasion, Final Hit, Assault Slash, Axe Mastery, Magic Mastery, Ice Mastery, Fire Mastery, Lightning Mastery, Icebolt, Firebolt, Lightning Bolt, Shockwave, Heavy Stander, Natural Shield (Monster), Mana Deflector.
- Critical Hit went down in Rank between Chapter 1 and Chapter 5. In fact, because the skill is Rank Novice, Ruairi lost the ability to score criticals as that Rank is not high enough to score criticals normally.
