Setting Sail for Romance

Glad tidings, my dear Milletian! The weather's been getting hotter, and that's not the only thing, if you know what I mean. A certain island, missing from our nautical charts for some time, has been recently rediscovered. If you're interested in some *ahem* in-depth research, come and find me. - Dr. Joe the Historian

(A man with an interesting hairstyle stands before you, clearly lost in thought. After pondering, he scrawls something in a well-worn notebook.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
Hum hmm... Wow, this weather sure is--

(With a start, Dr. Joe suddenly notices your presence and stops muttering to himself.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
Wha--?
Oh! (Character Name). Hello. Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Dr. Joe.
I've heard so much about you from my many brothers! Although I hope you won't let their, ah, eccentricities, shall we say, color your impression of me too harshly. Heh...heh. Anyway. As something of an expert in the history of Erinn, it's a true honor to meet someone like yourself, whose great deeds are the subject of many a book I've studied...
My apologies! I've wandered far afield of my point.
(Character Name), have you perhaps heard of Erinn's mysterious secret island, the path to which opens only around this time of year?

> Prompt: (Nod affirmatively.) or (Shake your head.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
That just means I get the privilege of telling you about it, if you'll allow me! How about it?

> Prompt: Sure. (Set main character) or Not quite yet...

> Prompt: Sure. (Set main character)

Dr. Joe the Historian
Are you quite sure?

> Prompt: Not quite yet... or It is island time. (Set Main Character)

(Selecting Not quite yet... gives the same dialogue as before.)

> Prompt: It is island time. (Set Main Character)

Dr. Joe the Historian
Ah, wonderful! I'm quite excited to discuss the matter with you, (Character Name)!
Ahem. Let me begin! For some time, I've been travelling across Uladh, researching a legend of a mysterious island.
Truth be told, it's something of a passion project of mine. After all, who wouldn't be charmed by such a tale, and not just from one region, but shared by the people of a whole continent.
But for all my years of research, I never truly thought this day would arrive.
I stand here before you on the doorstep of history. It is true! I have found a way onto the island!
The mysterious island of love! The path is open only when the longest night of the year, Alban Arthuan, ends, and Palala begins rising upon Alban Eiler!
And I think you, (Character Name), should visit the island!
Ah, not because I'm scared to! I've already been there a few times, actually. I just think more people should know about it.
And of course, that would allow me to advertise it as Dr. Joe's mysterious island, visited by (Character Name)! Why, I might even have a chance to beat Caraven Jimmy's revenue...
Um! I mean! Uh... Did I say that out loud? I truly apologize... Of course, I am inviting you in the spirit of discovery and such, it's just... Well, you know how academic funding is...
A-Anyways! I'm sure it would be a wonderful adventure for you! Heh...

(Dr. Joe's awkward chuckle trails off into silence.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
...And, I can tell you with complete confidence, it's the perfect environment for a young hero such as yourself to fall in love!
So, without any further delay, allow me to send you there!
Please, explore to your heart's content! And if by chance you come across anything related to the history of the island, well, you'll know where to bring it, yes? ...To me! Bring it to me. Please.
As my brothers might say, okie doki! ...Do you get it? Anyway, (Character Name), it's best if you close your eyes for the journey. Then, count down from three, and when you smell the sweet scent of cotton candy, you may open them again.

(The screen darkens.)

(You close your eyes, as Dr. Joe suggested.)

(One... two...)

Much A-Doki About Something 1

Welcome, friend, to Doki Doki Island, where our chief export is love! Also our chief import, as it turns out. - Soulmate Manager Grego

(The screen fades back in. You open your eyes to see a beautiful island. On one side, people fish and search for ore on a sparkling beach. On the other, you can see a pathway lined with pink trees and white lanterns.)

> On-Screen Message: Doki Doki Island

> On-Screen Text: A sweet scent tickles your nose, and a gentle breeze ruffles your hair.

(You approach Soulmate Manager Grego.)

Soulmate Manager Grego
Hello! I don't think I've seen you before... You must've come to visit when the path opened up, no?
Well, it's lovely to meet you! I'm Grego. I'm in charge of the island's Soulmate system.

> Prompt: Soulmate...?

Soulmate Manager Grego
Yes, you heard me right! After all, you're on Doki Doki Island, an island of love.
It's a peaceful haven, without hatred, jealousy, or fear. Love is in the air, the soil, and the sea here.
That's thanks to the dreams of Margaid, the founder of our little community.
You'll be able to participate in all sorts of lovely experiences and activities with your Soulmate on Doki Doki Island.
And, although those experiences are previous on their own, you'll also gain Doki Doki Points as you play mini-games together.
Once you've earned all the Doki Doki Points you can, I'll teach you Flowery Couples Flight, which you can use to fly around any area where flight's allowed!
Oh, don't worry, though! You don't HAVE to find a soulmate if you don't want to.
You can still gain Doki Doki Points and enjoy the island solo if you'd rather. It does take a bit more effort and time to get to 100% Doki Doki points without a Soulmate, though.
So, how about it, (Character Name)? Would you like to try out the Soulmate matching system?

> Prompt: Match Soulmate or Do Not Match Soulmate

Soulmate Manager Grego
If you'd like to hear more about the island itself, I'd recommend talking to the Elder.
If you go up that hill over yonder, you can't miss her!
Then, I hope you have a love-filled day!

(You follow Grego's directions and go to speak to the Elder.)

Karenza (Chat Bubble)
A traveler! It's always a joyous time when the path opens up.
Welcome, one and all, to our humble island.

(An elderly woman looks upon you with eyes full of warmth. The laugh-lines on her face and callouses on her hands tell a story of a life well-lived.)

Karenza
Hello! It's my honor to welcome visitors to the island while the path is open.
Enjoy your stay, traveler. I'm Karenza, the island's elder. Which is really just a respectful way of saying I'm quite old, haha!
Hmm? I see... Grego told you to talk to me, eh?
In that case, let me give you an introduction to the island. I'll keep it quick, I promise.

(Karenza takes a moment to organize her thoughts, her fingers tapping against her chin.)

Karenza
The place you and I are standing right now is the center of the island.

(As she talks, you follow her gaze and turn to look at the beautiful town square.)

Karenza
Many of the island's resident's live here and mingle in our open-air town square, known locally as the Plaza of Blessing.
The fireworks set off at the plaza contain the blessings of our ancestors, and those who rest under them will find that doing so even earns them EXP.
If you head up a little ways from here, you'll reach Lookout Point. From there, you'll have a bird's-eye view stretching all the way out to the sea. It's a popular spot to spend some quiet time with someone you cherish, if you happen to find yourself in sudden need of a romantic vista.
Not far from lookout point is a beautiful pond. Many couples love to linger there on their tour d'amour.
To the south is our ever-popular restaurant that serves delicious meals to all our hungry heart-seekers.
With the big boom in visitors we've been seeing lately, Chef Maisie mentioned that the restaurant is always looking for a few extra hands, so if that sounds fun, I'd say it's worth it to pay a visit and see how you can help out.
And of course, I couldn't forget to sing the praises of our Stage. You can grab your favorite instrument and join with others there to make beautiful music beneath the fluttering cherry blossoms. Such spontaneous moments have a way of staying with you for long after your vacation is over.
But of course, there's more to this island than just the places I've told you about. Travel around and explore, and I'm sure you'll meet some of our lively residents, who know a thing or two about love themselves.
Let them be your guide to fun and enjoyment, with unique experiences like the 'Depths of the Heart Test.'
And, of course, if I need any help around the island, I may have a Part-Time Job or two I can offer you. ...For a reward, of course--I wouldn't expect you to spend your vacation working for free!
Anyway, I think that about covers my little overview.
If you have any questions about the island, are looking for a Part-Time Job, or just want to purchase something, come and find me here.
I hope our island will be a place where you make many fond memories. May Margaid's blessings fill your day with happiness and peace.

Two Flowers Blooming Under the Moonlight

Say, aren't you...? Goodness, it feels like it's been ages! - Some Guy (?)

(As you familiarize yourself with Doki Doki Island, you come to the northeastern beach. Standing there is a man in fancy dresswear, looking to the sea.)

??? (Chat Bubble)
One, two, three. One, two, three...
I haven't been to this island in forever, but it feels like nothing's changed since last time.
So much time has passed, but even so...
This weather, this smell, this feeling... They're all the same.
I know it must be too late, but still... I hope she's doing well.

(His movements are graceful, even peaceful, as they create a soft stirring in the air around him. And yet, his calm, empty gaze stares straight ahead, wandering somewhere beyond this present place and time.)

???
...Hm?

(The man slowly turns towards you, his surprise evident in his words.)

???
Hey, now there's a scent I'd never forget! How long has it been? It's me! Ewan!

Ewan
I haven't seen you in ages! Haha, I remember back then, you used to be such a wild tomboy!

(...)

Ewan
Hm... I didn't expect you'd be this...quiet.

(...)

(You've met many people in your adventures, but you can't recall ever meeting a man named Ewan.)

> Prompt: Ask who he is or Tilt your head in puzzlement

Ewan
Wait, so you're not... Oh dear. I could've sworn you were them.
I'm so sorry. I haven't been to this island in around 20 years, and when I caught your scent on the breeze, I was just reminded so strongly of a friend I knew long ago. My memories from back then may be a bit hazy, but in that moment, I was so sure you were them.

(The man smiles awkwardly, offering his apology for a case of mistaken identity.)

Ewan
Aha... I fear I must've come off as overly familiar with you, then, so...
Let me properly introduce myself. My name is Ewan, and I used to be a dancer with the 'Bifrost' troupe, based out of Emain Macha.
Aha... that was quite a while ago now, though. These days, I just sort of roam around, going wherever I have a mind to go.
Might I ask your name?

> Prompt: (You tell him your name.)

> On-Screen Text: You introduce yourself to Ewan.

Ewan
(Character Name)... A lovely name--as sweet as the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves of the cotton candy trees here.
So, (Character Name), I trust you also came to the island via the path that opened during Alban Eiler? It seems the island receives its biggest influx of visitors this time of year.
That's how I got here, at any rate. Way back when, I used to live here, actually, but I left when my family moved out to Uladh. It feels so nostalgic to walk these old pathways I used to skip down as a boy...
......
I realize this may sound eye-rollingly saccharine, but...

(Ewan's sheepish smile spreads across his face like ripple[sic] across a calm lake.)

Ewan
I've come back to find my first love. She's the one who first taught me how to dance, actually.

> Prompt: (Listen to Ewan reminisce) or (I need time to steel myself for a bittersweet backstory...)

> Prompt: (Listen to Ewan reminisce)

Ewan
Back when I was a young lad...

(You close your eyes as Ewan tells his tale.)

Shadow Mission: An Angel Descends!

(The screen dims.)

Ewan
When I was young, there was a rumor that every night, a ghost would appear near the lake.
My friends and I were dying to find out if it was really true, of course, so... we decided to play a game. Whoever lost would have to go out to the lake at night and see if they could find the ghost.

> On-Screen Text: As you close your eyes, Ewan's story springs to life in your imagination. You can almost hear the voice of a young boy calling out...

???
...So we all agree, right? The one who loses has to go to the lake and find the ghost.
All right, rock-paper-scissors on the count of three. One... Two... Three!

(The screen fades in. A child with blue hair looks back and forth at his two similarly-aged friends, disbelief on his face.)

Little Ewan
...!
Crap! How'd I manage to lose?

Red-Haired Child
Whew... I'm just glad it's not me.

Black-Haired Child
Hehehe! Ewan's our ghost hunter!

Little Ewan
...Hey, Lowie put out his hand too late. I demand a do-over!

Red-Haired Child
Ha, what are you talking about? You lost fair and square, Ewan! You're going!

(Ewan shudders with his hands over his face. The red-haired girl giggles at him.)

Little Ewan
Nnnnnn... Y-you guys are gonna be right behind me, a- aren't you?

Black-Haired Child
Fine, fine. We'll watch you from, um...right over there. Just go on!

Red-Haired Child
We'll be waiting, so, um... If something happens, just scream real loud, okay?

Little Ewan
O-okay. I'm...gonna go now...

(The screen fades out.)

(Goaded on by his friends, the young Ewan heads towards the lake, his legs trembling beneath him.)

......

(The sight of Ewan carefully peering over the water comes into view.)

Little Ewan
Right. I-I'll just watch from the bushes here. Maybe there's nothing out there and I can just head back.

(The screen softly flashes. The camera focuses on a spot in the water.)

*splash*

Little Ewan
(...!!! Is someone th-th-there?)

(The screen flashes again.)

*splash*

Little Ewan
Wh-who are you?
(It's too dark to make out their face...)

(Ewan jumps back.)

Little Ewan
Aaaah! There really was a ghost! I've gotta get out of here!
Okay, just gotta stay calm. I'm gonna sloooowly back away. Step...by...step...

(The screen goes dark. Then, it bursts a dark brown color and returns to the scene.)

(Ewan's hopes of beating a stealthy retreat are foiled as his foot catches on a rock, sending him flailing to the ground.)

Little Ewan
U-uwaaaaah!

(A pair of yellow shoes, patterned with white flowers, walks from the lake up to the shore. They stop next to Ewan.)

(Tap... Tap... Tap... Tap...)

Little Ewan
P-please don't kill me...! I'm only thirteen! I've barely even started my life!

Two Flowers Blooming - Nari.png

Girl
...What are you doing out here at this time of night?

Little Ewan
Wait... you're not a ghost?

> On-Screen Text: My heart is pounding, but not in fear...

Little Ewan
...Huh?
Are you an angel?

Girl
...Did you hit your head? C'mon, take my hand. I'll help you up.

......

(The scene shifts back to the present, on the sparkling beach.)

Ewan
It turned out that the 'ghost' who'd been haunting the lake was a beautiful girl who came there every night to practice her dancing. That's how I first met Nari.
Her bright smile beneath the soft light of the moons had me so smitten that I completely froze. It was like my mind couldn't even proccess the thought of taking her outstretched hand. To say it was love at first sight is putting it mildly.
After that, I'd make my way out to the lake at night as often as I could to chat with her and learn more about dancing.
But... in time, my parents decided to move to the mainland, to Uladh, and well... I had to go with them. *sigh* It feels so long ago now.
To be honest, I'm not even sure whether Nari is still living on the island. I promised her I'd come back, but...
......
That was 20 years ago...
Standing here now, I feel kind of foolish. It's far, far too late to keep the promise I made, and yet here I am, standing on the shore of my old home, hoping she's still around.
Every year when this time rolled around, I'd idly think about going back. I wanted to go back! But things came up--you know how life goes. I was recognized for my skill in dancing, climbed the ranks in my troupe, earned a surprisingly robust income for someone in the liberal arts... I was living the life I'd dreamed of.
I realize now that those were all poor excuses, but I just continued on like that. The years rolled on, and now it's probably too late.
But even so...
I still think about her, and every time I do, I'm overcome with regret for what could have been. I've always wanted to tell her I was able to achieve my dream thanks to her. I want to know how she's doing...and I want to apologize, too.
Who knows? Maybe she left the island years ago. Maybe she got tired of waiting. Still, making the trip here, knowing I did my best to find her, I can at least lift the burden of regret that's always hung over me.

(Ewan grows quiet, pondering the right words to express his complicated feelings. You see his lips quiver before he speaks again.)

Ewan
...May I ask a favor of you? (Character Name), you're a visitor here, and I hope you have a wonderful time as you travel around seeing the sights on the island, but...as you enjoy your vacation, if you should happen to hear anything about my old love, would you let me know?

> Prompt: (You nod in agreement.)

(You're here to wander around seeing the sights and chatting with people anyway, so it should be easy enough to keep an ear open for any news that might help Ewan find the woman he's looking for.)

(As you tell Ewan you'll help him out, he smiles back at you.)

Ewan
Thank you for being so kind. Her name is Nari--a wonderful name for a wonderful woman.
I realize my request was a bit out of the blue, and I'm not expecting you to tromp all over the island single-mindedly seeking her out, of course. But if you should happen to hear any news about her while you're out exploring, well... I'd really appreciate it if you shared it with me.
(Character Name), while you explore the island, I'll go around and make a few inquiries. Let's meet up when we've both got some new information to share.

(He bows politely.)

Ewan
May the warmth of Margaid bless your every step.

(Soon, you find yourself speaking with Elder Karenza again.)

Karenza
Hello there! You've become quite the familiar face around here recently. What can I do for you?

> Prompt: (Ask about the person Ewan is looking for.)

> On-Screen Text: You ask the elder about Nari.

(You ask Elder Karenza if she knows someone by the name of Nari.)

Karenza
Hm? Nari? ...If she were from this town, I would know her...
...
Then again, perhaps she's new, or...

(Karenza taps her chin thoughtfully.)

Karenza
Well, I don't know off the top of my head, but how about this? I've got a deal for you.

> Prompt: A deal?

Karenza
Yes, that's what I said. Here's my offer: I'll gather information about the person you're looking for, and you help out around the island in exchange.
It's quite a busy season for us. More than a few residents could use help with something or another, and there's not enough hands to go around. So, you go look around, find out who needs help. How about it? Doesn't seem like a bad deal to me.

> Prompt: Accept the offer or Not quite yet...

> Prompt: Accept the offer

(It is, in fact, not a bad deal. You nod your head in acceptance.)

Karenza
Ah, wonderful! Then, while you're helping, I'll find out as much as I can about your Nari.

(As you've promised, look around Doki Doki island for people you can help out. Maybe completing the Live, Laugh, Love, Loot~ quest once would be a good place to start.)

(It doesn't take long to find someone in need. Once your tasks are complete, you return to Elder Karenza.)

Karenza
Oh, hello again, (Character Name).
I've heard you've been quite a help with Part-Time Jobs and with other little tasks. Thank you!
I'm afraid, for my part, I haven't had much success.
One thing I can tell you for sure is that no one by the name of Nari currently lives on this island.
I know every resident at least a little, and that name didn't ring a bell at all.
But I had a thought that perhaps she was someone who used to live here. I'm looking into that.
Keep an eye on the sky. I'll send an owl if I find anything else.
Sorry I couldn't be more of a help, but I hope you're enjoying your time here regardless. And let me know if you need anything else.

(Karenza, smiling, gives you a friendly wave farewell. It seems finding Ewan's first love might take a bit more time. Might as well enjoy the island and[sic] until Karenza contacts you again.)

A Promise Lost to Time

I found a bit of information about this 'Nari.' Come see me when you have a chance and I'll tell you more. - Elder Karenza

Karenza
Ah, you're back, (Character Name).
I appreciate you coming to see me again. I'm sure you're busy, but I have news to share.

(Karenza clears her throat and continues.)

Karenza
Ahem, I did find something about your missing person. You know, your Nari.
It seems she was indeed a resident of Doki Doki Island, despite what I told you last time.
There was some confusion about her name. Well, I don't need to get into it.
...
Have you visited the place where the dye cloths are hung, down the hill?
It's a well-known spot; that's where we make natural dyes using wildflowers that grow around the island.
But you might be wondering what the relevance of that is.

> Prompt: (Nod your head.) or (Tilt your head.)

Karenza
Well, from what I was able to glean, the person you know as Nari used to work there. So if you pay a visit, you will likely be able to learn more.
Our Floral Dye Helper is very dedicated; she's been there as long as I've been the Elder. I'm sure she'll remember who she used to work with.
That's all the information I can give you, so off with you. Go see the Floral Dye Helper.

(Karenza smiles and jokingly shoos you away.)

(Go find the Floral Dye Helper on Doki Doki Island.)

(You head down the hill and toward Maisie's restaurant, where many sheets of dyed cloth are now hanging. The Floral Dye Helper is easy to find; her petal-covered dress is rather conspicuous.)

Floral Dye Helper
Oh, hello. (Character Name), right?
I heard stories that you showed up after we opened to visitors. Can I help you with something?

> Prompt: (Tell her about Ewan and his first love.)

(As you ask Floral Dye Helper about Nari, she tilts her head in thought.)

Floral Dye Helper
I see. So you're looking for someone named Nari...
Um...Yes, I think I know who you're talking about. But it was a long time ago...
...
Here, (Character Name). How about this? Help me out with the floral dyeing, so I can tell you mean well, and then I'll give you the information you need.
Plus, I'll give you a Dye Ampoule with the color you help me make. So it's a pretty good deal for you, I think.
It'd really help me out, (Character Name). Try out Floral Dyeing once, and dye this dye cloth.

(In order to continue investigating, it seems you'll need to dye the dye cloth. Talk to Floral Dye Helper and try out Floral Dyeing.)

(You do as she asks, and help to dye one of the cloths.)

Floral Dye Helper
(Character Name), thank you for helping out with the Floral Dyeing. From the beautiful color you made, I can tell you mean no harm, hehe!
So you wanted to know about Nari, huh?
It was a very long time ago, so my memory's a bit vague, but she used to help me with dyeing. So yes, I do remember her.
She was very quiet. She came in, did her work, didn't talk about herself at all. So I didn't ever get to know her well...
But there's one thing... She always gazed out over the horizon when the sun was setting. I remember she seemed so wistful...
I got up the nerve to ask about about it one evening. She'd found a lilac petal washed up on shore, bleached and ragged from the ocean, but she was looking at it like it was the most beautiful thing in the world. She told me that she had someone she was waiting for, out over the horizon...
It seemed like a touching story, but... I never learned more than that. After a little while, she started helping out at the restaurant instead.
Sorry if that wasn't very helpful. You could try asking around at the restaurant. Maybe the chef knows more.
Anyways, I really appreciate your help, (Character Name).
By the way, I've got enough supplies for you to do Floral Dyeing once a day as long as the island's taking visitors, so please come find me if you want to make another Dye Ampoule!

(You head over to the restaurant.)

(A woman wearing a crisp chef's uniform and a harried expression stands before you, muttering to herself.)

Doki Doki Chef Maisie
Phew... 'Spose I should be happy about the business, but ever since that path opened up I haven't had a minute's rest. I won't last if this keeps going...
Hm... Hey, aren't you...
(Character Name)? I heard rumors you were around. What brings you to my restaurant?

> Prompt: (You describe the person you're looking for.)

Doki Doki Chef Maisie
Hm, searching for someone, huh? Well...

(Maisie wipes her forehead with a kitchen towel, seeming to think for a moment, but just then, a ticket with another order comes in, and she starts reading it.)

Doki Doki Chef Maisie
Ah, jeez, more orders? 3 Doki Doki Steaks... One medium rare, closer to rare than to medium, one medium-ish but not too well done but not too rare either, and one...so well done that it's as hard as a piece of marble? Hah... People sure do...have different tastes, huh?
Oh, right, you're still here. What kind of steak did you want? No, not a steak, information. I remember. Look, I hurt my hand and I can't cook too well right now. Do you think you could help me out? Then we can wrap the day up early, and I'll be able to think about your missing person.
You don't mind, do you? Oh, obviously I'm not asking you to work for just information. I'll pay you!

(It seems like you'll need to complete the quest Cook, Serve, Doki Doki! before you can continue investigating. Talk to Doki Doki Chef Maisie and help out at Doki Doki Restaurant.)

(You help Maisie with the rest of her shift.)

(Maisie wipes her forehead with a kitchen towel, looking at you.)

Doki Doki Chef Maisie
Wow, I have no idea what I would've done without you. Thanks a bunch. You're a life-saver.
Okay, remind me of the name of the person you're looking for... it was Nari, right?
Hmm...

(Maisie strokes her chin thoughtfully and furrows her eyebrows.)

Doki Doki Chef Maisie
Actually, I do remember her. It was quite a while ago, though.
She was something of the strong, silent type, haha. We never spoke about anything other than work. So I don't know where she went, just that she left when the path opened up...
She did come to say goodbye, but I didn't want to pry about where she was going.
Hmm...
Oh! I did notice one odd thing, the day she left. She was carrying a boot. Not a pair, to be clear. Just the one. And it was little, too. Looked like a kid's size.
I'm afraid that's all I know. Oh, if I hear anything from a customer, or something like that, I'll tell the Elder to let you know.
Aaanyways, you really saved my bacon today. Don't be a stranger, okay?

(Maisie gives you a bright smile and holds up her hand for a high-five.)

> Prompt: Up top! or (Look away)

(Now that you have some information, you go back to the beach where you first found Ewan.)

(Ewan stands looking out over the sea toward the horizon before noticing your presence.)

Ewan
Oh, there you are, (Character Name).

(Ewan cheerfully calls your name, but his expression appears rather forlorn. Did something happen?)

Ewan
I've cris-crossed the island, and I even had the good fortune to run into an old friend of mine. But even after all my searching, I haven't found so much as a trace of my first love.
How about you, (Character Name)? Did you hear anything?

> Prompt: You relay what's happened up to now.

(As you tell him what you heard from Elder Karenza, the Floral Dye Helper, and Chef Maisie, you see his eyes grow moist.)

Ewan
Oh... So that's how it was...
......From the sound of it, she must have waited a long time for me to keep my promise.
The shoes you mentioned--I know what that's about.

> Prompt: What ARE the shoes about?

> On-Screen Text: You ask about the shoes.

Ewan
Well... They're a sign of the promise I made.

> Prompt: You listen to Ewan's story or I am not ready yet...

> Prompt: You listen to Ewan's story.

Ewan
I think those are the shoes I gave her. You see, when my family was leaving the island for the mainland, I gave her my shoes, promising that one day, I'd return to get them.

(You close your eyes as Ewan tells his tale.)

(A new scene fades in, with a pink-tinted screen. A young girl stands at Lookout Point, watching the sea.)

Girl
I wonder if he's already gone...

(Ewan runs up the steps behind her. She turns to look at him, then walks to him.)

Boy
*huff* *puff* So here's where you were! I'm glad I found you!

Girl
...Ewan? What are you doing here? Isn't your family leaving today?

Boy
Well...they ARE, and I'm probably gonna get in trouble for disappearing right now, but I had to give you this before I left.

(He hands her something.)

Girl
You're giving me... shoes?

Boy
Yeah, they're my shoes. I probably won't be able to come back and see you again for a while, but...
When the flowers start blooming and the path opens again, I'll come back to get my shoes! I don't know when, but... as soon as I can.
So... I want you to wait for me, okay, Nari?

Girl
...I will, Ewan.

Boy
Don't cry. We can be brave together, even when we're apart. I know you'll grow up to be even more amazing, and I'm gonna do my best to do that too until we meet again.

Girl
*sniff* I'll be waiting!

Boy
Goodbye, Nari...but just for now! Be well.

Girl
Goodbye, Ewan.

(As Ewan turns to leave, the memory ends.)

> On-Screen Text: Talk to Ewan again.

(Reminiscing calmly about his boyhood on the island, Ewan wears a gaze that seems somehow far away, his epxression offering few hints as to his feelings.)

Ewan
What was it that stopped me from keeping my promise? In the end, I suppose 'the foolish hesitation of youth' is the only answer I have.
...
......
.........

(Ewan sighs deeply before raising his head.)

Ewan
It was never my intention not to keep the promise I had made.
It's just...I had an unexpected accident, you see. One that permanently sidelined me from my dancing career.
From there, it's like everything fell apart. I'd lost my purpose, and my mind churned with despair, resentment, embarrassment, and regret. Caught in a spiral like that, well... I felt like I wasn't worthy of being with her anymore. That she could do a lot better than me.
I couldn't even accept myself. How could I ever hope she'd accept me? Those thoughts plagued me day in and day out, my heart choked with resentment for my situation as my hope hung by a thread.
...And so, I continued to hesitate. Thinking back now, I don't know why I waited so long.

(Ewan sighs remorsefully, hanging his head in disappointment with himself.)

Ewan
I guess I'm just throwing out excuses at this point. What's done is long since done, and even knowing how foolish I was, it's far too late to do anything now.
I just thought that maybe...
Even if she no longer feels the way she used to, it would be great to hear how she's doing.
...Well then, (Character Name), if fate is kind, may we meet again one day.
I'm grateful that you've been so willing to take time out of your fun vacation here to help me, and for listening to me ramble on about the past.

Memories of Spring

This time, I've found some concrete information I can share with you. Come back and see me again when you have a moment. - Elder Karenza

Karenza
Welcome back, (Character Name). I take it you saw my owl?
Good. I found solid evidence at last. Chef Maisie at the restaurant told me about it.
You know, I wasn't sure about this quest of yours, but you've hleped us too much to keep calling you an outsider, or questioning your intentions.
The person who was once named Nari is living on the island now, under a different name. Her name is Sandy now.
So you can see why it took so long to track her down. We weren't expecting the name change.
But, anyway, you're probably impatient to find her, are you not? Here. Take this.

(Karenza gives you a slip of paper with a bit of neat writing on it.)

Karenza
I've written down the place you'll find her, so you won't forget. Go on, go see her.

(Karenza smiles at you, full of warmth.)

(Go to the place Karenza marked for you, and find out if Sandy is the person Ewan is looking for.)

(You head to the place where Karenza instructed you to go. When you get there, you come across a woman in a white and blue dress, with dark hair tied up in a bun.)

The refreshing beauty of the yellow forsythia's first spring blossoms welcomes you with a friendly wave. As if in response to her gentle gestures, the tender sprouts raise their heads, almost as though they're greeting her with a good-morning.

Sandy
Hello there. Something I can help you with?

(The woman greets you as she bustles around, searching for something.)

Sandy
If it's not too urgent, would you mind coming back later?
You see, I've misplaced my gold pouch, and I've been looking everywhere for it.
Could I have dropped it on the way here? Oh dear...

(It's understandable she'd be preoccupied, having lost her coinpurse. It couldn't hurt to search the area to see if you can find her gold pouch anywhere. If you do, she'd surely be glad to see it returned.)

> On-Screen Message: Help Sandy search for her lost gold pouch.

(You scour the island until you see something suspicious near one of the hammocks.)

(You see a small pouch lying on the ground.)

(Taking it in hand, you can hear a muffled jingling within; presumably the clinking of coins against one another.)

(As you give the pouch a closer inspection, you can see the name Sandy engraved in small letters on the bottom.)

(You head back to Sandy.)

Sandy
Is there something I can help you with? If it's not too urgent, would you mind coming back later?

(You hand Sandy the Gold Pouch you found along the seashore.)

Sandy
Oh! This is the pouch I lost! Goodness, where did you find it? Thank you so much!

(Sandy's face beams with a warm smile as she expresses her gratitude.)

Sandy
Judging by how you're dressed, I'm guessing you must be a visitor to the island. Do I have the right of it?
So, what brings you here? If you wanted to chat, I have the time now.

> Prompt: (You ask if she knows Ewan.)

> On-Screen Text: Ask about Ewan

(As you cautiously ask her about Ewan, you see the bright smile fade from her face.)

Sandy
Huh? Did I hear you right? Ewan?
......
How...are you acquainted with him?

> Prompt: You fill her in on everything.)

(You tell her about all that has happened since you met Ewan.)

Sandy
...
......
...I see. Sorry, but you'll have to give me a moment.

(Sandy's brow furrows, as though she's trying to collect her thoughts. After a few minutes, she smiles again, though less easygoing than before.)

Sandy
So... I'm not really sure where I should start with this, but here goes.
Like you mentioned, Ewan was a friend of mine. One I made a lot of happy memories with when I was young.
For a long time, I waited for him to come back. There was a time I even tried to search for him myself.
I'm glad to hear he's well, but to be honest, I...think it would be difficult to see him again, even just as friends.
We were young back then, and so many years have passed since...
......
More importantly, in that time, I made new memories, and eventually found love again. I made a fresh start with a new name, and now I have a family of my own, with a daughter who means the world to me.
The times Ewan and I spent together were beautiful, but...I've come to accept that perhaps it just wasn't meant to be.
......

Even the strongest hearts can't wait forever. Eventually, I decided to bury those sweet memories of my teenage years deep in my heart. I'll always treasure those times we shared, but...

(Sandy slowly opens her eyes, returning to the present as she looks at you. As she speaks, you imagine the girl she once was.)

Sandy
...Actually, can I ask you a favor?
I'd like you to relay a message for me.

(Sandy excuses herself for a moment, hurrying off before returning with a pair of old shoes accented by a fresh lilac flower.)

Sandy
The boy I knew was full of heart. I know there must have been some reason he never came back. He would never have willingly broken his promise to me.
Take these shoes and give them to him, and let him know that I hold no resentment toward him in my heart. If he knows that...

(Sandy hesitates for a moment, then smiles wistfully.)

Sandy
If he knows that, I think he'll be able to let go of the past. I'm sorry to ask something so personal of you when we only just met, but I'd really appreciate it.
Here, take this food I made. It's nothing special, but I wanted to give you something to thank you.
I feel like I'm asking a lot of you, but I'm hoping you'll take the shoes to him before the lilac flower starts to wilt. That's the surest way my message will really reach his heart.
...Thank you, traveler, for letting me take this walk down memory lane.

(Sandy nods, bidding you a fond farewell.)

Sandy
I pray that the love of Margaid be with you, wherever your road may lead.

(Deliver the shoes to Ewan, along with Sandy's message.)

(Making sure to hurry, you carry the items to the beach where Ewan is waiting.)

Ewan
Ah... I'm glad you decided to drop by, (Character Name).
I was planning on leaving the island soon, and I was hoping I'd have a chance to say farewell to you before I headed out.
So, what have you been up to?

> Prompt: (Tell Ewan the news about his first love.)

(You share with Ewan what the elder told you about his first love.)

Ewan
...What? You're telling the truth?
S-so Nari is on the island?! Goodness...I can scarecly believe it. Come, tell me-- where can I find her?

(You cautiously relate to Ewan what Sandy told you and hand him a pair of small shoes.)

(After listening to everything you said, Ewan takes the shoes in his trembling hands.)

Ewan
These are the shoes I gave her that day. It's really her... It's really Nari.

Two Flowers Blooming - Ewan 01.png
(Ewan clasps the small shoes tightly to his chest, tears streaming down his face.)

Ewan
*sniff*...S-she really asked you...to tell me that she doesn't hold any resentment toward me?

Two Flowers Blooming - Ewan 02.png
Ewan
*sob* N-Nari... I'm so sorry...

(Sobbing racks Ewan's body as he beats upon his chest with his fists.)

Ewan
It hurts...so much...

(...)

(......)

(You wait with Ewan for what seems like a long time as his emotions come flooding out.)

(After sobbing with the intensity of a child, Ewan slowly calms down, lifting his head to gaze toward the sky.)

Ewan
This flower...
The one that Nari tied to the shoes. It's a lilac, isn't it? I can smell its distinctive fragrance.
Did you know that in the language of flowers, lilacs are said to symbolize first love? They can also represent an old love that lingers, and, in some cases...
...they're meant to express a farewell.
......
It's such a beautiful goodbye... Just what I'd expect from the girl I loved so much.

(Ewan slowly turns towards you, and you see the hints of a soft smile on his face.)

Ewan
(Character Name).
...Thank you for telling me. What seemed like a missing piece in the puzzle of my life has finally been set in its right place.
Without you, I might've spent the rest of my life always wondering, never knowing.
Honestly, I'm just glad to know that Nari is doing well. I'm...

(Ewan closes his eyes with a peaceful smile.)

Ewan
I'm satisfied with that. That's the whole reason I came back to the island, really.
......
Now, whatever fate has in store for me, I think I can accept it.
......
I think...I'm just going to rest here until I'm ready to leave. I want to gather up all these mixed-up thoughts and feelings I've got and send them soaring skyward.

(Ewan draws close enough that you can feel the faintness of his breath as he speaks.)

Ewan
Life is nothing if not unpredictable. To think my life has been so enriched by someone I started off on the wrong foot mistaking for someone else.
It makes me want to cherish those I used to know, those I'll meet someday, and of course, those I'm blessed to have in my life right now. That includes you, of course. I want those I know to live lives filed with happiness.
Thank you so much, (Character Name). I'll never forget your kindness, your scent, or the sound of your voice.
I pray that wherever you go, you'll find happiness--or that happiness will find you.

(Ewan leaves the beach and walks up to the place he first met Nari.)

Two Flowers Blooming - Dance Shoes.png
Ewan
The memories we made together in the sunlight, dancing beneath the stars... I guess it's finally time to relinquish them to the heavens.
...I wish you love, laughter, and all the happiness in the world.

(Ewan looks skyward. The screen fades to black.)

???
Come on, get it right!

(A white screen comes up briefly. When it leaves, the scene is in the past, when Ewan was young.)

Nari
How many times do I have to show you? First, you arch the soles of your feet, then bring both of your arms together in a circle!

(The camera moves to show Nari and Ewan practicing ballet.)

Ewan
Um... But that's what I was doing.

(He tries again, holding his arms in a circle in front of him.)

Ewan
Okay, here. Like this! This is how you do it, right?

(The girl shakes her head emphatically from side to side before offering another demonstration of the proper technique.)

Nari
Like this. One-two and three.

Ewan
Okay, I think I've got it now! So like... one-two and--
Uwaaaaa, look out!

(Ewan begins to wobble.)

Nari
Oh! Ewan, are you all right?!

(Nari catches him by the arms.)

Ewan
Whew...almost took a nosedive there. Thanks, Nari.

Nari
Ummm... S-sooo...
E-Ewan, you're, um...very close... *blush*

(Ewan steps away.)

Ewan
O-oh, r-right! I didn't mean--

Nari
I know...

Ewan
...
Sooo... Do you, um...

Nari
Y-yeah...

Ewan
...

(The two approach each other. The camera pans up before they touch. Cherry blossoms fall from the trees that overhang them, and the memory ends.)

(When the player completes the quest:)

(Another memory begins, this one in sepia tone. Ewan is in Emain Macha, approaching a local florist.)

Florist
Oh, hello there, Ewan.
The usual, right?

Ewan
Haha. I'm afraid you know me and my predilection for lilacs all too well.
*inhaling deeply* Ahhh, and such an aroma these have. They must've blossomed at just the right time to bring out their most exquisite charms. Thank you, as always.

Florist
They were freshly picked earlier today, so I had a feeling you'd like them. That'll be 150 Gold, whenever you're ready.

Ewan
Ah, just a second. Now, where'd I put my coinpurse?

Florist
Actually, Ewan, I just remembered...
It's been a year now since you lost your sight in that accident. How are you getting along these days? You seem like you're doing much better, compared to before.

Ewan
......
Well, I've grown used to it, I suppose. I didn't have much of a choice. It's hard to make out much more than light shapes and dark shapes, but I've learned how to sketch out the details in my mind based on what I can smell and touch.

Florist
I'm glad to hear you've found a way to work through the rough parts. Are you going down to Port Ceann again today?

Ewan
Yeah, that's the plan.

Florist
If you don't mind my asking, why do you always buy such nice flowers only to scatter them into the waves?

Ewan
Haha. A fair question.
...
I scatter them in the hopes that even one of these petals will ride the waves on a journey to reach a dear old friend of mine.
And if that petal should reach her... that it would let her know how sorry I am that I never kept the promise I made.

Florist
I see. I don't know what happened between the two of you, but I hope your wish will come true, and your feelings will reach her.
Thank you for always being such a good customer, hehe. Have a safe trip, Ewan.

(Just as Ewan turns to go, someone else seems to approach the florist: Sandy.)

Ewan
Hmm...?
This fragrance... I know it from somewhere.
No, no. It's probably just my imagination.

Florist
Is something wrong?

(Cherry blossoms appear and fall, like snow, from the sky.)

Ewan
No, not at all. I'll see you later.

(In opposite directions, Ewan and the mirage of Sandy depart.)

The Doki Doki Experience

Be sure to experience all the attractions Doki Doki Island has to offer while you're visiting. You won't want to miss a moment!

(You've been on the island for a while now, helping the residents as well as Ewan and Sandy. While going about your tasks, you stop to speak with Elder Karenza.)

Karenza
Oh, (Character Name), it's you. I was looking for you, as a matter of fact.

> Prompt: (Raise your eyebrows)

(You raise your eyebrows at her, puzzled.)

Karenza
Haha, don't give me that look. It's nothing to be worried about.
I was just thinking. You've been here quite some time, haven't you? You must be enjoying yourself. At least, I hope you are.
I've heard from many residents that you've been quite helpful. And that's not to mention the help you've given me, myself. I'd like to thank you, as the island's representative.

(Karenza gives you a formal bow, and takes out a scroll of some sort.)

Karenza
It's a tradition to give this to each resident of our island. It's a copy of a scroll from the island's founding. I don't know if it will be of use to you, but...since we think of you like one of us, we'd like you to have one.

(Karenza looks to the sky, sighing.)

Karenza
Well, no matter what I think, once the light of Palala grows hotter and the days get longer, the path will disappear again.
The elders... Haha, not me, I mean--our ancestors... They were always wary of outsiders coming to the island. But, after meeting you, I don't think a closed door is always the right choice.
...Perhaps that was the dream of Margaid.
Ah, anyway, (Character Name). You probably don't have time to follow an old woman's digressions. I just wanted to wish you well. May love's light always warm you.
When enough time has passed, and Palala shines on the land just so, I hope we meet again.

(You look at the Old Manuscript given to you and decide to take it to Dr. Joe the Historian, thinking he may be interested.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
Oh, (Character Name)! How did you like the island! Did you enjoy your trip?

> Prompt: I enjoyed it! or It was not great...

Dr. Joe the Historian
Ah, by the way... (Character Name).
Did you perhaps...find anything of not[sic] while you were there? M-maybe even something... relevant to the island's history?

(You show Dr. Joe the book Elder Karenza gave you.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
Oh, wow! This looks fascinating! Might I have a closer look?
Hmm.
The language actually seems to be an archaic form of the Uladh tongue. Fortunately, with a bit of work, I believe I can decipher it...
Hmm.
Ah, (Character Name), I apologize, but I must focus for a while. I believe this book to be of great import, and I cannot put off translating it for even a moment.

(Dr. Joe descends into a flurry of papers, references, and cross-references You couldn't distract him from his translation even if you tried.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
...
...
...
...Done! (Character Name), you... Well, don't take this the wrong way, but this document is much more fascinating than I had dared hope!
This mysterious island, which we now call Doki Doki Island, was once... Erm, so...

(For once, Dr. Joe seems to be at a loss for words. He shakes his head ruefully.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
Well, I think you had just read it yourself.

(Dr. Joe hands you the translated copy of the book.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
I owe you my most sincere thanks, (Character Name). This mysterious island has turned out to be rich in history, indeed.

(Dr. Joe clasps your hand, eyes shining.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
Truly, the day I told you about Doki Doki Island was a fateful one indeed. Haha! Thank you.

Dr. Joe the Historian (Chat Bubble)
At last, proof of my theory!
There really is a path to this island that is only accessible during the right season.
On the longest night of the year, when Alban Arthuan ends and Alban Eiler begins, as Palala hangs in the sky, a new island appears. Have you seen it?
A new island! With this discovery, I'll revolutionize the field!

Pet Dialogue

(Dr. Joe tries to smile at you, but it's interrupted by a huge sneeze.)

Dr. Joe the Historian
A-Achoo!
*sigh*
Aw, little friend... Hah, I'd love to pet you, but...
My allergies are beastly.
A- A- A....
Aaa-CHOOOO!
S-Sorry, little one. Ugh, where did I put my allergy meds...?

Oh, is this a gift for me?
Ah, thank you for your kind thought, but I don't feel it would be right for me to accept.

(Grego gently hands the item back to you.)

Pet Dialogue

Soulmate Manager Grego
Oh, aren't you just the cutest little visitor I've ever gotten? How'd you get here?
Ah, I see!
You followed your owner here, huh?
Well, I hope you enjoy your visit! If you get lost, just follow the cute clouds in the sky!

(Soulmate Manager Grego whistles a tune.)

Extra: Side Dialogue (Elder Karenza)

(Trying to give a gift:)

(Elder Karenza seems surprised at your offered gift.)

Karenza
Hm? Is this... a gift for me?
Hahaha, I do appreciate the offer, but...
I assure you, I've no need for anything of the sort.

(Karenza gently covers your hand with hers.)

Karenza
It does my old heart good to know that we have such a kind visitor. That's all the gift I need.

Pet Dialogue

Karenza
Hello, little one. Did you chase the warm sun all the way here?
It warms my heart to see you. Please enjoy your time on the island.
And let me know if you need anything, okay? I may be old, but I have my ways.

Doki Doki Chef Maisie (Chat Bubble)
So many customers! Argh! I could really use a hand...
Haha, okay! Let's get to it!

Doki Doki Chef Maisie
Welcome. I'm Maisie, the most famous chef on the island! Well, actually, the only chef on the island... But I AM famous, you know. So famous I could really use some help in the restaurant... Ugh, my back... Anyway. What can I do for you?

(Buying ingredients:)

Doki Doki Chef Maisie
Need cooking ingredients? You're in luck. I got a fresh shipment in this morning. Feel free to look around!

Pet Dialogue

Doki Doki Chef Maisie
Heh, what are you doing here, little guy? Nothing we serve would be good for you. No, you need something like... a Soft Chicken Chew, made with tender chicken and Fragrant Honey Milk.
I bet your owner will make you one with Fynn Crafting if you ask!
For now, why don't you go enjoy the island scenery?

Extra: Side Dialogue (Nostalgic Person)

(Common text:)

Nostalgic Person (Chat Bubble)
I wonder if they're still doing well...
Would they still remember me?

Nostalgic Person
We promised to go to Doki Doki Island and see the flower petals drifting on the sea breeze. I wonder whether they still remember...

> Prompt: What are you doing?

Nostalgic Person
I'm waiting for the one I met last time I visited Doki Doki Island. Even with the limited time we got to spend together, I knew they were my soulmate. I haven't felt their presence in Erinn in the year since, but I'm always hoping I'll see them again.
I want to keep waiting here, in case they come again, so I'm looking for a Milletian who's willing to go and dig up the time capsules we buried together. We buried them on the beach, which I know isn't a lot to go by, but the capsules should emit a faint glow at night, making it easier to find. Having someone help me out once a day would be enough, I think.
If you an find them for me, I'll give you the commemorative boxes we buried with them. It shouldn't be too much trouble--like I said, just helping me out once a day should be enough to find them all. Though, our deal is just between you and me. No sending another character to do your work--or claim your rewards.

(Trying to give a gift:)

Nostalgic Person
I'm okay with gifts, but the gift I'm really hoping for is that the person I've been thinking of would come to see me.

Pet Dialogue

Nostalgic Person
I'm glad you came to talk with me, but...maybe come back as a character who isn't a pet, okay?

Welcome, traveler. Why not rest in the Plaza of Blessing?
This island was grown from a bedrock of love.

(Trying to give a gift:)

(Graunia shakes her head gently as you try to offer her a gift.)

Plaza Manager Graunia
Oh... is this for me?
Ahaha! Well, thank you, but if you'll pardon the cliche, your presence is present enough for me.
Thank you for the thought, though.

Pet Dialogue

(Graunia looks at you and smiles brightly.)

Plaza Manager Graunia
Hello, little friend! Why, you're just as sweet and fresh as an island breeze, aren't you? Did you follow your owner here? Hehe.
I hope you have a good time basking in the warm sun...and maybe even find a soulmate, too!
...
You wouldn't want to stay with me, would you...? Hehe. I'm kidding. I know you already have your owner.

Stage Manager Bard Triphina (Chat Bubble)
I hope you're having a wonderful day.
La la... La la... When we meet again...

Stage Manager Bard Triphina
Hello there. I've heard you're a Milletian who's come a long way to visit our island. Is there anything you need?

> Prompt: Can you tell me about this place?

Stage Manager Bard Triphina
This stage is set against the backdrop of beautiful cherry blossom petals. It's also the place where important rituals are held here on the island.
Typically, people regard it as a place perfect for making special memories with that special someone. Sometimes, we'll even see couples who go up on the stage and perform together.
I think you deserve to make beautiful memories here with someone special to you-- or maybe even many people you care about. If you're feeling musically inspired, you could even put on a concert!

(Ending conversation:)

Stage Manager Bard Triphina
Anyway, I hope your day goes well.

Pet Dialogue

Stage Manager Bard Triphina
Hiii! Aww, aren't you adorable?
Would you like to hear a lovely piece of music?
