I have a favor to ask. Could you please stop by the Bank when you come to Dunbarton? - Austeyn

Austeyn
(Character Name). It's good to see you back again. It's not easy to find diligent people like you. I feel like I could trust you with any task.
You Milletians are always changing your appearances... It's hard to trust people like that. But not you, (Character Name).

> Prompt: Thanks or Ask What He Wants

> Prompt: Accept or Refuse

(You head over to Port Cobh to deliver the letter.)

Augustine
Who are you? Do you want something from me?

> Prompt: Ask Politely or Command Arrogantly

Augustine
Good luck with that. Now get out.

> On-Screen Text: (Pieces of the torn letter flutter everywhere.)

(Augustine roughly pushes you.)

(You put the letter back in one piece.)

> On-Screen Text: The ripped-up letter was pieced back together. Check what it says.

(You read Ferghus's Letter. It seems to have been addressed to Ascon.)

Ascon and His Lanterns

Who did Ferghus write a letter to? Find the owner of Ferghus's letter.

Ascon
This letter! You don't know how long I've been waiting for this. Thank you so much, but, would you hold for a moment? I'd like to read this right now, excuse me.

(Ascon's face darkens.)

Ascon
I should have known I couldn't trust that person. That's what I get for hiring the cheapest help... In any case, thank you for delivering this letter. I want to show you my appreciation, wait here.

(Ascon fumbles around for something.)

Ascon
Ah, here it is. This is a Star Sapphire. It's also known as the heart of the ocean.

> Prompt: Thanks or Ask for More

Ascon
Look over there! Isn't the ocean beautiful? Construction at the dock is almost finished. Soon, Port Cobh will be full of amazing ships. The billowing of sails, the shouts of crewmen...
Sailing never fails to get my blood going. If you ever have the chance, I encourage you to board a ship. You'll be able to do it in town when the dock is finished.

(Ascon's eyes glisten as he drops his head and looks away.)

Ascon
I've one less thing to worry about now that I've received that letter, but there's still much left to do. I should probaly get started on those lanterns.

> Prompt: Help or Ignore

(Ascon grabs your arm as you turn to leave.)

Ascon
Wait! Please...

(His eyes avoid your gaze.)

Ascon
I'm so sorry to ask, but I have no one else I can turn to... I promise this won't be difficult for someone like you. Do you see that lighthouse behind me? That lighthouse has made Port Cobh the center of trade between Uladh, Belvast, and Iria.
Its light cannot reach too far from port, so we send lanterns out on the water to help. The problem is that those lanterns sink when they run out of oil, so we need to make new ones everyday.
I'm an old man, (Character Name), and it's not as easy for me to make lanterns as it used to be. If you could just bring me the materials, that would help so much. And I'll pay you, of course.

(Ascon bows in gratitude.)

Ascon
Please bring me 4 Thin Spars. I'll be waiting here.

(You make the spars and deliver them to Ascon.)

(He carefully examines the Thin Spars, and looks up at you with surprise.)

Ascon
You must be quite dexterous, (Character Name)! I can definitely work with these materials.
Thanks to you, I have one less thing to worry about. I should get back to work now. Come visit me again if you find the time.

The Lost 50 Years

Ascon would like to talk to you. Stop by to see him when you have some time.

(He shakes your hand with a big grin on his face.)

Ascon
You were of tremendous help last time. With your help, I was able to make enough lanterns to last me well after the dock construction is done. Please stop by whenever you have time and help me. Your help is always appreciated.

> Prompt: Sure, I will or Thanks, but No

(Ascon looks at the scribble on the backside of the lighthouse. His shoulders slack as he sighs heavily.)

Ascon
This is my sister's drawing. It's one of the few things left that can connect me to her. It feels like only yesterday that we ran around laughing and playing here... That was 50 years ago.
(Ascon lets out a long sigh.) I've only been to Port Cobh and Belvast Island. When I was younger, I dreamt of being an adventurer. I spent hours back here conquering evil, and saving princesses.

(Ascon frowns, his wrinkles making his age and sadness even more apparent.)

Ascon
Pirates kidnapped me, (Character Name). They took me to Belvast Island, and made me a slave. I lost my youth to suffering and pain.

(He stops talking and watches the ocean.)

(In a flashback scene, Ascon is toiling away and mining an deposit at a Belvast Island labor camp. A pirate passes by and kicks Ascon down.)

Maurice the Engorged
Do yer job!

(A vision of a three people is seen: a man, a woman, and a child, all seemingly upset.)

(The Ascon of the past stands back up and resumes working.)

(Ascon's eyes are wet with tears.)

Ascon
The only thing that helped me survive Belvast Island was my precious memories. We forget most of our memories, but those shared with our loved ones last forever. There's no point in asking 'what is.' Still... I can't help but think it...
What if I had gone back a little earlier? Could I have saved her? Why didn't I go back! (Tears stream from Ascon's eyes as he begins to sob.)

Shadow Mission: Attack of the Pirates

(A family is spending an afternoon by the lighthouse in Cobh. Two children are playing. The parents stand up.)

Alasdair
Ascon, Arranz! It's time to leave.

Arranz
I don't wanna! Can't we play some more, daddy?

Ascon
Me, too! Mom, can we play a little more? Can't I just take her back in a little bit?

Gwenllian
Oh honey. Just let them play a little bit, they'll be fine.

Alasdair
But...

Gwenllian
Go easy on them sweetie. Ascon is already 10 years old. I'm sure he can take care of his little sister.
Isn't that right, Ascon?

(The kids cheer as the parents take their leave, and resume playing.)

(Sometime later, as the kids are taking a break, a storm comes, bringing rain with it, but also Pirates. Two of them walk up to the kids.)

Tiny Billy
Heh heh... These lil' ones could be useful, eh Maurice?

Maurice the Engorged
Yeh'r right Billy. 'Specially that girl, Just don't be too rough with 'em.

(Ascon blocks the pirates's path to Arranz.)

Ascon Arranz, run!

Arranz
But, what about...

(Ascon charges ahead and engages the pirates.)

Ascon
There's no time! Hurry! Call the adults!

(Arranz runs away into the port. Ascon does his best to hold, but eventually ends up being captured.)

Scurvy Sandy
Don't kill the slaves, lads. It's time to go, the soldiers are comin'.

(The pirates leave, taking Ascon with them. The scene fades to Ascon retelling his tale.)

Ascon
50 years later, Admiral Owen's assault on Belvast Island allowed me to come home. My family was gone though...
My parents had already passed away. My little sister, Arranz, went missing after she got married and moved to Emain Macha.
The only thing I want now is to stay by this Lighthouse with my memories. Eventually, I'll see my parents again...

(MISSION END)

A Letter From the Past

Ascon seems to have an urgent matter at hand. Hurry over to him and find out what it is.

(Ascon's gentle and mild demeanor has disappeared. His eyes are sunken from lack of sleep and he looks like he hardly has energy to speak.)

Ascon
Oh, so you came. Sorry to have called you out of the blue. Something ridiculous has happened. I mean, you probably won't think much of it since it has nothing to do with you, but this is extremely important to me. I need to know what happened!

(Ascon collapses into a chair. He's shaking as though feverish, but his eyes are focused and alive.)

> Prompt: Help or Ask for Details

(Ascon swallows quickly. The muscles on his neck stand out as through strained.)

Ascon
I found these letters. These... strange... letters while reading through my parents' old things. These letters were requesting some ridiculous things from my family, and they were written under my name! My NAME!

(Ascon grips his chest as through suffering a sharp pain.)

Ascon
Please, read these letters and understand, Whoever wrote these letters destroyed my family. They used my name to threaten my parents, and to sell Arranz away in Emain Macha. I cannot let this go, (Character Name). Never.

(Ascon's sunken eyes do not blink. His body is tense and menacing.)

Ascon
Find the person who wrote this letter. The letter mentions a merchant in Dunbarton, talk to him for some clues.

(Ascon grabs you by the shoulders and starts speaking quietly.)

Ascon
This letter means so much. If I can't find out who this person is...

(Ascon's eyes fall as his voice trails off.)

Ascon
You would be saving my life by helping me, (Character Name). I'm begging you. Please... For my family. For my sister. They never deserved any of this.

(Ascon mumbles incoherently and bows deeply.)

(You read the Letter from the Past. It seems a large order had been made from Walter in Dunbarton. You head over there to speak with him.)

Walter
What is it? Are you buying something?

(Walter does not look glad to see you.)

> Prompt: Ask Politely or Ask Bluntly

(You head back to Port Cobh and inquire with Siobhanin.)

Siobhanin
Ah yes. The cooking pots! the merchant Videk had requested them several times, so I bought them from Walter for him. I certainly had no need for them. Now that I think about it, I haven't seen Videk in ages.

(Siobhanin mouth sprays as he talks.)

Siobhanin
Oh you don't know him do you? He's a merchant from Belvast. Videk is a truly outstanding gentleman. I remember how he used to aid Ascon's family in the old days. He helped them even when that girl, Arranz, wedded that fellow from Emain Macha.
What a shame. She was blinded by money. Still, Videk would buy gifts from me for their family. He even managed to do it while in Belvast. That was true kindness.

(Siobhanin smacks his lips and frowns.)

Siobhanin
I'm not sure why you're curious about those pots. Honestly, I'm not sure why Videk wanted them either. I haven't seen him around much recently. For a while he was taking care of Ascon's sister when their parents passed away.

(Siobhanin pauses, and then suddenly opens his eyes wide.)

Siobhanin
I know who you can ask for help. Speak with Annick at the pub. She used to live on Belvast Island. She would certainly know more about Videk than me.

(He quickly returns to work.)

(You head to the pub for a chat with Annick.)

Annick
Ahoy there! Welcome to the finest pub in Port Cobh!
We're also the only pub in Port Cobh, so you don't really have a choice do you? Hahaha, I,m just pullin' your tail.
Well, what are you here for anyway? Did you come to see my pretty face?

(Annick looks at you playfully.)

Annick
You... You know when you see beauty. Muhahahaha!
Sorry, but you're just too young for my tastes. Buy hey, feel free to come back when you're a little older. I'd be glad to give you another look then. Hahahahaha!

> Prompt: Ask about Videk or Tell her she is not funny

Annick
But you're saying that he was... kind? To Ascon's family? Bwahahah!
(Annick doubles over with laughter) Oh... my sides...
Yes, Videk is a kind person indeed. He just can't abide to see people in need...
(She tries to keep a straight face, but bursts into laughter again.) Oh my stomach... I ca... I can't breathe. (Finally, she manages to calm down.)
I'm so sorry, don't know what got a hold o' me. I don't know much about Video, but I know a man who does. Ask the Rich Man in Emain Macha. Those two are old partners. He's a kind man, too. Just like Videk.

(Annick snaps her fingers and looks directly at you.)

Annick
You seem pretty close to old Ascon. Would you mind delivering that to 'im? Someone left it here for him some time ago. I would deliver it myself, but...
I were a pirate, savvy? Ascon was a slave. I don't imagine he would appreciate the likes o' me. Alright, I've got things to do. Off with yeh now. Don't forget to deliver that letter!

(After reading the Letter for Ascon, you head to the lighthouse tto tell him about it.)

(He seems to have more wrinkles on his face than he did a few days ago.)

Ascon
Ah, you're finally back! I was beginning to get worried. Were you able to talk to Walter in Dunbarton? Was he able to tell you who wrote that letter? Did you by any chance hear anything about my sister?

> Prompt: Calm Him Down or Give Him the Letter

Ascon
So... This was all my fault?

(Exasperated, Ascon plops down into the chair.)

Ascon
I should have never been born. I'm the one to blame for all my family's tragedy. I'm the one to blame for the vanishing of my sister. They would've never fallen for this scam were it not for me.

(Ascon stares at the ground in silence.)

Ascon
I... know this is a lot to ask. You've already done so much for me. Could you find the person who wrote this letter? Perhaps... perhaps Videk could help. He helped my family some time ago. Maybe he knows who the crook is.

(Ascon shudders as if struck by a frightening thought.)

Ascon
You're the only one I can trust, (Character Name). I've kept a treasure from my time in Belvast. I was holding it for my sister until now, but I'll give it to you if you just do this for me. Just find the crook for me. Please, I have nothing else left.

(Ascon stares at the ground. It might be a good idea to leave him alone for now.)

Kind-Hearted Videk

Find Ascon's family friend, Videk. he might know who the crook is.

(You follow your first lead, the Rich person in Emain Macha.)

(He seems like the type of person who would do anything for money. He has no real expression, but his smile betrays a cunning and devious nature.)

Rich person
You're looking for Videk are you? I wouldn't say he's a close friend of mine, but we did do business for a while. I do know where he is now though. I'll glad ly tell you...

(His lips part in an unsettling grin.)

Rich person
But first, there is a matter I need help with... My Jewelry Pouch was stolen by a White Sprite in Coill Dungeon. Would you retrieve it for me?
Take this string and place it on the Coill Dungeon altar. It's dangerous so I suggest bringing an ally or two.

(You head into the Coill forest and retrieve the rich man's pouch.)

Rich person
Ah, I knew you wouldn't disappoint! Here, give me the pouch.

> On-Screen Text: You have given Empty Jewelry Pouch to Rich Person.

(He snatches the Jewelry pouch out of your hands. He quickly turns pale.)

Rich person
Wha... Where are my Jewels? Did you think you could take them without me noticing? Brigand! Get out of my sight. And forget about Videk until you bring me my jewels.

(He begins to stomp off, but then turns around with a thin lipped smile.)

Rich person
Actually... It's more likely that the sprites ate my jewels. They do have a taste for shiny stones.

(He slings an arm around your shoulder. His touch makes your skin crawl.)

Rich person
I suppose there's nothing that we can do about them now. I can't give you Videk's whereabouts without some sort of payment though. I'll tell you what. Capture a Kid Cyclops in Rundan Dungeon, and I'll tell you everything I know about Videk.
Here's some Cyclops Bait to help you find him. Just place it on the Rundal Dungeon altar. To tame it, you'll need this cane as well. I'm giving it to you for free, so make sure to bring me that cyclops.

(You head to Rundal dungeon and do as tasked.)

> On-Screen Text: The Rich Man has taken Kid Cyclops.

Rich person
You did it! Grand job. Oh, the gentleman who bought this Kid Cyclops will be so happy. He<ll be sure to take good care of him, In fact, it's probably better for the Cyclops too!

(He laughs, licks his lips, and stares at you. His eyes are alight with greed.)

Rich person
I'm beginning to like you more and more, (Character Name). If you're interested, you could start a career in this field. You know, Kid Cyclopes can earn us a lot of money.
No? Humph... Well as promised, I'll tell you where Videk is.
Currently, he works the trading post at Belvast Island. He's old now, so traveling is no longer a part of his business. If you want more information, you can ask Gordon. Videk was a regular at his restaurant. No doubt he knows more than I do.

(You go to the restaurant.)

Gordon
Welcome! What are you looking for?

I remember Videk was delivering letters from Arranz's brother while he was captive on Belvast Island. That's why she was always so glad to see Videk. Back then they were friends still.

(Gordon looks to the table by the riverside and points to it.)

Gordon
Right there. That's where Arranz got into a fight with Videk. Arranz was waiting there for just over three hours. When Videk finally arrived, she slapped him. Hard.

(Gordon Chuckles.)

Gordon
It was so loud, you could hear it from Iria. Videk instantly went red. She was shouting, and tried to slap him again. He caught her hand though.
There was pure hatred in her eyes. Videk must've done something unforgivable. After that, she pulled back her hand and left.

(Gordon pauses and sips from his glass of water.)

Gordon
Videk stood there for a while. He didn't move, he just looked down. On his face was something between shame and rage. I went to go cook for about 30 minutes. When I came back Videk had left.
They both completely left Emain Macha. Vigorin, Arranz's husband, searched Uladh high and low with no luck. She disappeared.

(Gordon turns to Fraser.)

Gordon
Give me a minute, this fool is making a disaster of that dish. Hey!

(Gordon rushes over and scolds him. Fraser gets flustered as the two argue back and forth.)

Gordon
Sorry, I have to keep an eye on that boy. Now that I'm thinking about it, there were a lot of suspicious things about Videk. All he carried around were those cooking pots and letters for Arranz.
I won't forget that look on his face when Arranz left. I hope it wasn't too serious... Argh, now I'm all worried because of you. Let me know if you find her, I hope all is well with that girl.

(You head back to the Lighthouse to tell Ascon about what you learned.)

(Ascon appears to have calmed down significantly. He looks much healthier.)

Ascon
(Character Name)... I know that I've caused you a lot of trouble recently, and I apologize. You don't have to worry about me anymore. My episode earlier was... an overreaction.
My parents have already passed away. I'm sure that my sister is living a happy life somewhere away from here. I'm too old and too tired to dredge up these feelings of resentment and hatred.
Instead I'll take solace in the fact the villain will never find peace. He may have destroyed my family, but I won't let him destroy me.
Here's the treasure that I promised. It's only a small diamond, but it's all I have. Put it to good use.

> Prompt: Talk about Arranz or Leave Quietly

(Ascon's face turns pale.)

(Ascon rises to his feet, his hands clenched tightly into fists. His voice has a steely, determined quality to it now.)

Ascon
Arranz probably saw Videk for who he truly was. He's been cheating our family for decades. No doubt he was the one who wrote those letters. If he so much as laid a finger on her...

(Ascon shakes the thought from his head.)

Ascon
I'm going to find Videk, and I'll make him pay. He won't get away with it. As soon as I can find someone to manage the lighthouse, I'm going after him.
That rat can hide, but I'll have my vengeance, one way or another. Will you help me, (Character Name)? I'd be grateful if you could ask around in Belvast about where one can find Videk. Anything you could give me would be a tremendous help.

Extra

Ascon
If you can take the ship again, and you are ready to travel to Belvast Island, talk to Videk. You're the only one I trust, (Character Name).
